The song is actually called the HEAVY WATER PLANT. From the book, Cape Breton Song Collection, compiled and arranged by Allister MacGillivray. You can check it out at http://www.miramusic.net

Heavy Water Plant
Mick McLennan

I left my home at quarter to ten;
I headed for the Heavy Water Plant
Haven't worked in Heaven's knows when
Singin' a Song of Cape Breton

Picked me pogey up at George Street
I marched 'er to the bank on the corner
New lift seems to come to your feet
Singin' a Song of Cape Breton

Pogey cashed right into me hand
I headed for the nearest tavern
Jaysus, I'm the king o' the land
Singin' a Song of Cape Breton

Took a table down at the back
Ordered two--by Christ I was thirsty!
Finished 'em off at the very first crack
Singin' a Song of Cape Breton

In walks MacNeil from Margaree
Must have got his pogey yesterday
He's so drunk he can hardly see
Singin' a Song of Cape Breton

I love my beer; I can't get enough.
Well here's a toast to Victor Oland;
He's the man who brews the stuff
So we can sing in Cape Breton

Oh.. well it's four o'clock..oh, and much to my sorrow
I should have tried the Heavy Water Plant
Ah, t'hell I'll go tommorrow
Singin' a Song of Cape Breton

Just as background, the heavy water plant was located in Port Hawkesbury, on the western side of Cape Breton Island, not far from the Canso Causeway.

"Pogey" (POE-ghee) is your unemployment check. So the singer picked up his money, cashed it, and found new life coming to his feet.

The song appeared as part of "The Rise and Follies of Cape Breton," a musical review performed at the College of Cape Breton. Songs like this poked fun at Capers ("ah, t'hell, I'll go tomorrow") and those who looked down on them.

There were two heavy water plants in Cape Breton. One in Glace Bay and the other in Point Tupper, on the Canso Strait. Both are now gone, victim to a dropping demand for nuclear power.
The one at Glace Bay was built and then re-built a second time as design and materiel flaws surfaced in the first one. All of this created a great deal of work during construction.
