I'm told "Thamesbeat" is the new sound, and Lilly Allen the principal exponent. I find her totally unlistenable. What can she do, other than 27 different varieties of glottal stop?

The exuberance of youth. C'mon RB, give the gal a chance. I've just had a listen on her web site, nothing new there but she's got to start somewhere? She's experimenting.

I haven't heard a lot of her stuff, but I saw her on the Jools Holland TV show. Didn't think she was much of a singer. Like a lot of these youngsters, she's been 'rocketed to stardom' too quickly, (in her case mainly because of Myspace), and she probably hasn't got the experience to sustain it (whether she has the talent remains to be seen). But as terrier says, give her a chance. I won't hold my breath, and there's a lot of other stuff I'd rather listen to meanwhile.

Just for the record her father is Keith Allen most recently seen on telly as a "panto demon king" style Sheriff of Nottingham in the most recent BBC Robin Hood.
He also wrote and performed the alternative World Cup song, "Vindaloo." by Fat Les, a few years back.

Yes, but with respect I don't think that has (or should have) any bearing on whether she is any good or not, GtD!

Apparently she doesn't like being called "Keith Allen's daughter", and denies he had anything to do with her success.

Scrump - that may be. But from what little I've seen of her she seems notorious for slagging off everyone.
I believe that her mother divorced Keith a number of years back and was partner of comedian Harry Enfield after that.
Her mother is a TV producer.
I doubt that Keith Allen has much direct musical influence on her success, but the fact that her family moves in media circles can't hinder it?
I am never convinced when people with "connexions" bleat on that they didn't help them get where they are. I'm also not impressed when people from rich famiies say money doesn't matter.

Maybe all that's so, GtD, and I know exactly what you mean about the 'bleating', but I think we owe it to any artist to judge them on their own merits, and not be influenced by any family connections or whatever, difficult as that may be in practice.

It does make me laugh too sometimes, when (say) the son of a rock star - who probably only got a recording contract in the first place because of his famous parent - whinges about his music not being 'taken seriously', and that they got where they are through their own talent without any help from their parents, etc. etc. - but I still think we should try to ignore that when judging if their music is any good or not.
