Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,Canberra Chris Date: 02 Apr 07 - 08:15 PM Sorry Growler, I missed the thread going up, I didn't get to check the web with waves of visitors staying over the weekend on the way to our National Folk Festival here over Easter. One lot had their mobile home dumped on my front lawn by a tow-truck. We are seriously funny, and the idea is for everyone to have a bloody good sing, and get thirsty. Til falling over, as you say, we will no doubt get through chunks of our non-Shiny Bum folk repertoire as well, and every one else's. We want to hear you too. Can't wait, Chris |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: The Barden of England Date: 03 Apr 07 - 03:23 AM The pills are keeping the blood presure down (as well as other things), and I'm bowing to superior talent when it comes to 'The Shiny Bum Singers' - that and I'm commited to my promotion of TDL (or is that 'I should be commited for my promotion of TDL?) Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 04 Apr 07 - 03:32 PM Sorry, finger slipped. Just to add some detail, it will be a singaround, hosted by the shirt murderer and myself, otherwise known as the oldest, up and coming boy band in Kent, (Rough and Ready ), anything goes, with an extended floor spot for The Shiny Bums, ( for as long as they want ), plenty of real ale on sale and food thrown in. Should be a bloody good session |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 04 Apr 07 - 05:57 PM "Up and coming"? Sounds more like a porn film. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Canberra Chris Date: 05 Apr 07 - 06:14 AM Look forward to seeing you there John, a legend awaits us. We have drinking songs too, and other folk stuff, so there should be plenty to keep us all going. Has Karen ordered in enough beer? Chris |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 05 Apr 07 - 03:30 PM Chris, John is not so much a legend, as a leg end, ( though it's ages since he's seen it), but he does play some bloody good stuff |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,Dave Date: 06 Apr 07 - 12:37 AM Not to sure if this is a singaround or a gig. Can some one clarify please? |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 06 Apr 07 - 03:48 PM Hi Dave A bit of both. I am hoping to attract as many Folkies as possible. Shiney Bums want to here what we've got to offer, as well as singing ther stuff' They will have as much time as they need, and the session will end on a natural conclusion. I.E When nobody can stand up |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Canberra Chris Date: 06 Apr 07 - 08:13 PM Just confirming Simon's clarification, Dave. Hope to see, and hear you. Chris |

Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: The Barden of England Date: 12 Apr 07 - 02:56 AM Canberra Chris TDL - The unforgetable Tone Deaf Leopard. Amusing songs and confounding rythmns. As is often said 'Be afraid - be very afraid!' Looking forward to seeing you in Rochester. John Barden |

Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Canberra Chris Date: 12 Apr 07 - 05:03 PM My imagination is running riot on TDL. We have learnt to be afraid here too after some encounters at our National Folk Festival over Easter, including John Thompson of Cloudstreet in a nun's habit hitting a falsetto high C on Climb Every Mountain. hi jo-jo, from the look of your message, you'll be belting out the choruses like a good'un - look forward to seeing you there! Chris |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 12 Apr 07 - 05:33 PM Including my favourite - "Rye-Buck Shearer"? |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 12 Apr 07 - 07:17 PM Wysiwyg (me, not Susan) will be there spreading humour till fallover time. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: The Barden of England Date: 13 Apr 07 - 03:17 AM John Thompson's a mate of mine so I'm not surprised regarding the High C - but a nun's habit?? A nun with that beard - the mind boggles. What did Nicole have to say? Come to think of it she would have joined in. They're wonderful people and such great singers and musicians. You're lucky people over there that's sure. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 13 Apr 07 - 04:19 AM Barden - check out page 4 of 2007 Ozcatters thread for more informaton on John & Nicole's recent activities! sandra |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 13 Apr 07 - 03:55 PM Sandra / Chris Please dont post any more on this thread, cause if TDL turned up in nun's habits, I would seriously think of giving up beer |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,The Barden of England sans cookie Date: 13 Apr 07 - 04:23 PM TDL would only be seen in Leopardskin habits, so now worry on the beer front Simon. I'm not going to mention my habits as it may well incriminate me!! John B |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Canberra Chris Date: 13 Apr 07 - 07:43 PM Richard - Good grief, is this a record for requests to come in six weeks before the gig? Happy to oblige when we get past the Shiny Bum stuff. Any others? Tell us, and we'll come prepared. Cloudstreet and the Shiny Bum touring party were on at our Old Canberra Inn on Wednesday night, at the 'Who still has a voice two days after the Festival?' show. Unfortunately we didn't get a reprise of Climb Every Mountain from John - for which for the record Nicole was pointedly absent. He must have dropped the habit. (No! That's an even more appaliing prospect - don't anyone dare suggest it to him, he'd be desperate enough to do it). Also for the record, the Sound of Music competition was won by Canberra's very own and brilliant John Shortis and Moya Simpson, with how the movie and script might have changed if Marlene Dietrich had got the lead role. After Maria had seduced half the cast, the compere did ask the children in the audience of 2000 whether they had understood any of it. I think the accent probably saved us. We have to share Shortis & Simpson with you sometime too - start a whip-round. Chris |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 14 Apr 07 - 05:26 PM Can't mach that, but you will here from the worlds oldest new Boyband sensation, i.e. melodianboy and myself, AKA Rough and Ready, if that doesn't drive you back to Oz, then we may have to try the TDL therapy |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 May 07 - 06:58 PM More beer = refresh |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 May 07 - 07:10 PM It occurs to me to threaten that I have now rehearsed "Reynardine" (the short, Fairport, version) mentioned here by MGAS and I am looking forward to this session. My floors are now full for this event (after discussions with Growler earlier tonight) so random fly-bys are out of luck (unless female, slim, randy, and well-spoken, with a penchant for fat old men, in which case my bed is five feet wide). IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND GROWLER IS TO BE CONGRATULATED ON HAVING PULLED A GROUP OF THIS CALIBRE. The North Kent mob must really b there or b square, put up or shut up, etc etc. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Girl Friday Date: 25 May 07 - 07:42 PM You're not fat Richard, and same age as me. Repeat after me... WE ARE YOUNG AT HEART!!!! |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 May 07 - 03:02 AM Fat is relative. I am not as fat as some, but I am fatter than most. And whatever Hamish Imlach may have said, fat is not beautiful! I am definitely old, grey hair, grey beard. I would agree that many of us never grow up, but we do grow old, as our eyes and teeth and other bits try to tell us. Hearts? We may still have fun, but look at some of the prats of under 25 and the way they act, the jealousy, the spite, the preening, the fashion trends. Happily not all the young are like that, but a depressing number are. To have outgrown at least some of that is not bad, but good. Even at heart, we are older than we were. In some ways we are worse, but in some better. One of the ways we may be better would be in not trying to pretend to be what we are not. Thought for the day. Amen. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,Growler Date: 26 May 07 - 03:45 PM Bog off Richard, we are grey and fatter than we used to be, but we havn't grown up yet, so we have the wisdom of our years and the spirit of youth,( and we know more songs than they do ),so were's the downside, |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Girl Friday Date: 26 May 07 - 05:20 PM I wholeheartedly agree Growler. He's feeling low at the moment. Cheer up Richard, and get practicing your finger picking for Knockers. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 May 07 - 09:44 PM Wisdom of our years! Where is Ricky Tomlinson when you need him? The collective wisdom of a bunch of folkies is inversely proportional to the number of empties, probably on some sort of log scale. Fun yes: sense, my oath! What we do have is more memories of enjoyable foolishness, because we've done more of them, on average. Even if a folkie practices finger picking, who is going to fancy any old plucking? This is not an offer open to acceptance by all, by the way. It is Pete's funeral and wake on Tuesday. That's another thing wrong with getting old. Dead friends. Youth is wasted on the young, so much of the time. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 27 May 07 - 04:17 PM What a bloody good session. Thanks to the Bums and everyone else who came. I will never forget the Morris dance using keyboards instead of sticks. If you come back to England again, please don't forget us. Thanks again Simon |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 27 May 07 - 05:42 PM When you wake, Simon, I think you may ahve forgotten EVERYTHING |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Girl Friday Date: 27 May 07 - 05:53 PM Absolutely wonderful session... thankyou everyone especially the Shiny Bums!!! Loved all their stuff, and they liked ours too. They could imagine a fusion of Bums and Leopards. Not just Be afraid--- be bloody terrified I reckon! |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Dead Horse Date: 27 May 07 - 07:32 PM There are already far too many Tone Def Bums in this world thanks very much! Loved the singing and the playing. Made mental note to attend more of same. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 27 May 07 - 07:49 PM Shiny Bum videos -including Ten Meg Morris |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,Canberra Chris Date: 28 May 07 - 04:27 AM That was just a fabulous gig - we loved every second of it, and everyone there. Tone Deaf Leopard being there too was an unexpected - something or other, it was nice to not be the only act delivering complete surprises and watching such a variety of facial expression in the audience! Thanks to everyone there, and our good hosts at the (very) Good Intent. May it all long continue. Chris |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: melodeonboy Date: 28 May 07 - 06:18 AM Thank you so much, Shiny Bums, you were brilliant. Quite unlike anything I've seen/heard before. As Growler said, the Morris dance using keyboards was unforgettable; definitely one of the funniest things I've ever seen. And I wasn't the only one crying with laughter at it. I'm sorry I missed you at the end and didn't get the chance to say goodbye in person. Enjoy the rest of your time in Britain and I hope our paths will cross again. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: fisheye Date: 28 May 07 - 06:35 AM excuse me being slow in responding to this link, but i have been without internet for some time. I do have a small videeo of the first afternoon at the good intent, Richard Bridges will have a copy on Tuesday at Petes rememberance. fisheye |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: The Barden of England Date: 28 May 07 - 07:21 AM What a fabulous afternoon. The Shiny Bums were BRILLIANT!! Both our daughters had a great time, and that's a first for my eldest - she arrived with a hangover and left with a great big smile on her face. The Shiny Bums are an Australian National Treasure without doubt, so a huge thank you from me and mine. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 May 07 - 09:01 AM I bet there are a few hangovers out there! Glad Tenny enjoyed it, John. You'll get her singing yet! |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 28 May 07 - 11:40 AM A big thanks to Richerd for putting up the Bums at the last minute, despite the fact that I had to assist in cooking the post-gig curry Thanks Richard |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,Essex Girl Date: 29 May 07 - 03:07 AM Excellent afternoons entertainment, I thought they were great. How come there are so few pubs with the atmosphere and friendliness of the Good Intent? |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,albert tatlock Date: 29 May 07 - 03:42 AM Fisheye - why don't you post the videeo (sic) on youtube or google and put a link here. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Dead Horse Date: 29 May 07 - 04:12 AM And a big thank you to Sir Les Patterson for arranging to have the Shiny Bums perform over here. (Am I the only one to notice the amazing likeness of one of the Shiny Bums to The Australian Cultural Attache to the Court of St James?) ((nepotism, no doubt)) :-) |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Richard Bridge Date: 29 May 07 - 04:35 AM Fisheye was not at the Bums. He is talking of different video (or videeeo, I wonder if it will play on a video player). The Bums aver that Sir Les is blamed for a lot of misconceptions about Australians... I think they take him off on purpose. Dead Horse, I have seen a sheaf of undoubtedly genuine letters from increasingly senior Australian civil servants, and politicians, testifying to the worth of the Bums work. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Herga Kitty Date: 29 May 07 - 03:16 PM I finally got to meet up with Chris today - he came to my office to case out the venue for tomorrow's SBS performance. I'm really looking forward to hearing them at last! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Girl Friday Date: 29 May 07 - 06:30 PM Well, Kitty, you won't be dissappointed. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Hawker Date: 29 May 07 - 06:54 PM No, Kitty disappointment doesn't happen when the bums are about! WOW just recovering from Bude Festival. Thank you so much Chris, David, Arminel, Pat and Kerry for your company on Friday night, It was an unforgettable experience. Keyboard Morris, mobile phones, ID cards, Lift tai chi, I am still pinching myself to think how lucky we were to have you at our first festival. Thank you so very much. Photos of the Bude Bums are available HERE I hope the photos I took on Kerry's camera came out OK. I do hope we will meet again, and Arminel i'll let you have the viagra song if you think you dare sing it! LOL Much love and thanks to you ALL. Lucy x |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 30 May 07 - 05:09 AM thanks for the pictures, Lucy sandra |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 May 07 - 02:58 PM A huge thanks to Chris, Kerry, Pat, Arminel and Dave for brightening my day today - and for presenting me with an autographed copy of the 2007 tour book and a CD. I owe them all a large drink (at the least) - they can explain why, and it's all my fault. I hope to get an opportunity some time to see them in a folk club or festival setting rather than at my place of work! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: growler Date: 30 May 07 - 03:40 PM Here Here to all the comments above. As an organiser of a small town folk club, ( albeit, voted the best venue on Mudcat), I thank the Bums for a special afternoon, that will long be remembered |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester Shiny Bum Singers From: GUEST,Canberra Chris Date: 04 Jun 07 - 10:55 AM Thanks again to everyone, certainly including Richard Bridge - scholar and gentleman - for putting up the unkempt Bums overnight. Growler - the curry was great, and most welcome! We did scandalously overlook to present Richard with a songbook and CD between our varying departures, but they are awaiting him at the Good Intent with our apologies. Melodeonboy, we ain't seen or heard nothing like you either! Attempts by the Bums to describe your person and performance to others are foundering on the rocks. I think I referred to your voice as being pitched in the key of minus 20 degrees Centigrade, or was that Growler? My last dying word will probably be 'Torremolinos'. I will reconnect if I can before departure. Cheers, Chris |
