Subject: Folk Fesivals UK From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 07 Mar 11 - 06:38 AM I'm tired of hearing about just one festival on this forum, so I thought I thought I'd start a new thread about ALL the different folk festivals in the UK...from Abbotsbury to Moonbeams and all fun places inbetween.. Which ones are folks planning on going to this year? |
Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: theleveller Date: 07 Mar 11 - 07:34 AM We've already booked for Ryedale Folk Festival ryedale folk festival and Moonbeams Festival moonbeams festival Both superb, friendly festivals in the most beautiful settings imaginable. Others may follow later. |

Maybe one or two others if we can fit them in, but we tend to avoid most of the big ones. |
Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: Will Fly Date: 07 Mar 11 - 08:51 AM I don't go to folk festivals - or any other festivals, for that matter - because I'm not a huge fan of them, on the whole. Alan and I popped up to run a pub session at Warwick last year - great fun, but a long way to go for a 3-hour session. Having said that, I shall be attending all 4 days of the Bradfield Traditional Music Weekend, which is a miniature in festival terms, and enjoying playing music, singing, drinking beer and eating pies at the Royal in Dungworth. All in glorious countryside in the Peaks. And I shall take advantage of its proximity to Sheffield to pop down into that city and buy a musical saw from one of the few makers left. Even if I never get to play it properly, I can always saw a few bodhrans in half at future sessions... :-) |
Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: Folkiedave Date: 07 Mar 11 - 09:02 AM I shall miss Dungworth this year - away. But I usually go. |
Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 07 Mar 11 - 09:54 AM I've already been to Celtic Connections Cheltenham DERT (not a folk festival, but ....) and intend going to: Shepley Sidmouth Whitby Towersey and possibly Broadstairs (never been there), Southwell, Celtic Colours (in Nova Scotia ...ambitious!) and no doubt a few more...... quite a range of styles, size, artists etc...... Derek |
Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: Fidjit Date: 07 Mar 11 - 10:07 AM Derek You will love Broadstairs. I'm too busy moving house and home this summer. So I'll only manage a couple. Chippenham End of May Tenterden Beginning of October And possibly a day at Wallingford Early September. Chas |

Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: bubblyrat Date: 07 Mar 11 - 12:22 PM Absolutely no idea this year : a time of personal change and upheaval. Probably Oxford, even though it's been cancelled per se ( there are lots of "fringe" and ex-officio events planned). Maybe, just maybe, anything in France, especially in the Ariege region, or anywhere else within 100 miles or so of Toulouse ; hard to be certain just yet !! Maybe Sidmouth, if someone from above ,who loves camping, can be persuaded to attend ! --All things are possible ! |
Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 07 Mar 11 - 02:03 PM Folkiedave - please tell me about galicia. When and how. I've been asked to organise a mixed music/ singing session during the days for the Faversham hop festival. I'll post info when I have the details. Its always the end august - start september. There is usually a session and a barn dance in the evening. I'm off to the Shetland festival this year. Anyone else? FloraG. |
Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: Folkiedave Date: 07 Mar 11 - 03:07 PM Delighted to help. 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th July 2011 and Ortigueira is the biggest festival in Western Europe (as far as I know). Three stages, Oysterband, Shooglenifty, Anxo Lorenzo and Cristian Pato are the big attractions for me. The local tourist board and government subsidise it - so there are no charges! Details are on the website - there are some contradictions on the dates on the English bit ( e.g some pages have not had 2010 altered). http://www.festivaldeortigueira.com/index.php?lg=ing Can you log in and contact me? Otherwise I am dave at deyre dot plus dot com. I can probably help with Shetland too! |

Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: Hawker Date: 08 Mar 11 - 04:34 AM For those of you saying you cant afford to go to festivals, BUDE & STRATTON FOLK FESTIVAL is a great little festival on 27-30th May.....a fringe festival with concerts, ceilidhs and workshops. At £20 per weekend ticket - 3 days and 4 nights of great music, song and dance with camping available for weekend tickets at Bude Rugby Club at £8 PER UNIT per night, plus 50p temporary membership of the rugby club (all camping costs are at cost, we make no profit) Its a great value festival with some fantastic guests, a VERY warm welcome and the seaside too! Subject: RE: Folk Fesivals UK From: Bernard Date: 08 Mar 11 - 05:04 AM Whilst not a folk festival as such, Lymm Folk Club run a series of extra events during Lymm Village Festival, which this year starts on Thursday June 23rd and runs for ten days. I'll be putting the events list up around Easter time, but a useful download for the club generally is an RTF list that is updated weekly. Over the weekend of 25th/26th June we're running an Open Mic session, songwriting competition (5th year running) and concerts with Geoff Higginbottom, The Time Bandits and Pete Coe (who is also a judge for the competition). Other guests over the festival period include Stanley Accrington, the club residents in concert, Peter and Barbara Snape and a surprise concert yet to be announced. Unlike a 'conventional' folk festival, we won't be having events running concurrently, workshops or 'meet the artiste' sessions. For this reason we only sell tickets 'per concert' (there is no 'Season Ticket') - but tickets are cheaper if booked in advance, which applies to any guest night over the whole year. Ticket booking forms can be downloaded from our website - if the form you need isn't yet available, you can either check back nearer the time, or contact me by telephone, snail mail, email or PM me here. Please Note: the email addresses on the site are wrong! To cut down on spam, the '@' is replaced by '_AT_', which needs to be changed before you try to send your message. |

Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 11 Mar 11 - 04:53 AM "I hope Lizzie does come on and tell us which festivals she intends going to." Yup, I bet you do. Sadly though, I won't be, as I have this strange person who I regard as an Internet Stalker who follows me on messageboards, so I'd not give him one iota of where he might find me at a festival..or anywhere else. Thanks. See, Joe? Now *that* was polite wasn't it? Because what I really wanted to say was..."Why the fuck don't you get the fuck out of my face, pervert!" But I didn't....... ;0) |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Steve Hunt Date: 11 Mar 11 - 05:15 AM I was a quarter of Dalla at Celtic Connections and shall be half of Corncrow at Scilly, Crediton, Bude & Stratton, Chilled Cider, Leigh, Sidmouth and Wadebridge (and one-third of my family at Green Man and most of the others listed). |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Steve in Sidmouth Date: 11 Mar 11 - 05:30 PM Some years ago Lizzie, you said you might put me on your dance card. A deafening silence since then...... Hope you are well. We might have had the dance already of course, maybe you didn't own up to who you were. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Mr Red Date: 12 Mar 11 - 06:09 AM So skipy will be at the White Horse FF - what a surprise. See ya at the Ceilidh. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Folkiedave Date: 12 Mar 11 - 08:11 AM Trying to avoid you Lizzie. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Folkiedave Date: 12 Mar 11 - 08:47 AM Sorry pressed the wrong button there. Have no fear Lizzie - if I ever saw you in real life I would run a mile. Cowardice I know but there you are. Lizzie as far as I am concerned you are as barmy as a box of frogs. I simply wondered if you were prepared to answer the question you asked everyone else to answer. Clearly not. Some time ago, last year you flounced off Mudcat promising never to return. And not for the first time. Many people breathed a sigh of relief. Those who knew your track record knew you would be back. Now take a look at the threads you have posted since then. Now count the ones I have contributed to. You know for a cyberstalker and a pervert who is supposedly following you around - I don't really do a lot of it. Like I said...........box of frogs. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Fidjit Date: 12 Mar 11 - 10:34 AM One for Skipy White Horse Very recommendable. Sorry Dave can't make it this year. Too busy moving. But next year. I promise. Chas |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 12 Mar 11 - 01:03 PM You are not even worthy of a response. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Dave the Gnome Date: 13 Mar 11 - 03:03 PM Swinton! Possibly Shipley. Both well away from the coast so as to avoid screeching, foul-mouthed birds. I may risk Fylde again - I think the seagulls there are friedlier than those down south... :D |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Mary Humphreys Date: 14 Mar 11 - 09:58 AM Don't forget St Neots Folk Festival on the weekend of June 10th- 11th-12th. Anahata ( treewind) and I will be there with a presentation of Cambridge Folk Songs and a concert spot. The festival website seems to have a broken link. Try googling St Neots folk club. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Sailor Ron Date: 14 Mar 11 - 12:04 PM Has everyone forgotton "Fylde"? Now in its 39th year and the biggest in the North West of England.Sept.3rd/4th/5th/6th. in the West Lancashire Victorian port of Fleetwood. Concerts, singarounds, music sessions, dance [both social & ritual], workshops special events including this year "Kipling/Bellamy" & "The Golden Dream"... 175 years of Fleetwood. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 14 Mar 11 - 03:12 PM Well, knock me down with a feather. A response from Lizzie that only contains 8 words.... That's a first, surely? |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 14 Mar 11 - 03:44 PM "A response from Lizzie that only contains 8 words...." Fook off. (2) |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 Mar 11 - 04:39 PM Errr, Sailer Ron - 2 posts above yours... :-P Well done for plugging it anyway - One of my favourites. D. |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Dave the Gnome Date: 15 Mar 11 - 09:29 AM Whoops - Sorry Shepley and sorry for all those looking for a festival in Shipley! All these W Yorks towns look alike to me... The festival is actually in Shepley, which is a bit more rural than Shipley to say the least. Although it doesn't house Salt's Mill... :D |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 15 Mar 11 - 11:55 AM I mentioned Fylde too. It's the only festival we're actually doing for the first time. Looking forward to it. I get these Northern names muddled too David - specially Shipley, Skipton, (Both mean Boat Town as it happens) Shepley (Sheep Clearing) etc.. I think Shakespeare's Mr Omlette had a problem too... "Tebay or Nottingley, Theakston Wetwang. Wetherby Nottingham in the Minedrum To Suffield the Sligsby and Harrogate of Out Rawcliffe Forton Otley Talke Armley against a Seacroft Trull Anlaby Upperthong Endon..." |
Subject: RE: Folk Festivals UK From: Folkiedave Date: 15 Mar 11 - 01:25 PM Glad you were thinking of Shepley - brilliant lineup IMHO and I understand there may also be an added attraction in the form of a bookseller with previously cherished books about folk music for sale. |
