Subject: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: treaties1 Date: 03 Apr 02 - 01:45 PM Members of the Shellbacks Chorus would love to visit and hopefully sing at maritime events in the U.S.A. Numbers, dates,or length of visit, cannot not yet be agreed, but probably fall 2003. Logistically the North East states appear the best, though, nowhere is excluded at this early planning stage. Information of probable dates, locations and who to contact, for any Annual Maritme events in year 2003 would be very helpful in compiling a possible schedule for our trip. Any help that Mudcatters can give would be most gratefuuly received. Many thanks in advance Theresa |

Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Celtic Soul Date: 03 Apr 02 - 05:56 PM Good goshamighty!! How utterly cool...Well, of course, if you can make it to Mystic Seaport during their festivities, you should. That really is the pre-eminent Shanty festival in the US. There are likely some gooduns in Canada as well, what with that being the home of one of the great "Stans" of our time. There are quite a few in the southern states as well, seeing as Piracy is such a big thing these days, and there being many historical ports that were frequented by the likes of Blackbeard, et al. And (correct me if I am wrong) but I believe Mmario has mentioned the Maryland faire as we do a Piracy weekend with *lots* of guest artists. There are also a metric buttload of nautical and folk events around the Chesapeake Bay area, most of which can be found on our website, as we do a great deal of them. www.pyrates.com Wow...but it *would* be fantastic if you guys did happen to do one of the events we do. Probably the only way I am ever going to see you myself.

Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Abuwood Date: 09 Apr 02 - 03:54 AM Where is Mystic Seaport? I think this is THE shanty place in America. Can we sing on the plane or will they need a PEL? |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Peter Kasin Date: 09 Apr 02 - 04:28 AM Will you be on the West Coast? There are several possible venues - the schooner WAWONA in Seattle, Washington, the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Oregon, the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco where the full-rigged ship BALCLUTHA is berthed, the San Diego Maritime Museum where the Barque STAR OF INDIA is berthed, as well as smaller maritime museums in San Pedro and Monterey, California. PM me if you'd like details. Hello, Abuwood. Mystic Seaport is on the East Coast in Connecticut. Their festival is in June but they might have concerts going on in the Fall. chanteyranger |

Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 09 Apr 02 - 12:29 PM Lots of places and Festivals in Canada. Keep this thing going, let me know what potential dates are and I will see what can be arranged or is on for those times. Johnny Collins was over here last year and is coming again on April 29th, just so that he can come Morris Dancing with a bunch of us on Mayday. JohnB |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: GUEST,chanteyranger Date: 09 Apr 02 - 01:05 PM Abuwood, we'll have berths aboard historic ships at Hyde Street Pier for the Shellbacks if you make it out here for a performance. You would all need to bring sleeping bags and padding. chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Linda Kelly Date: 09 Apr 02 - 02:14 PM padding? |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: GUEST,chanteyranger Date: 09 Apr 02 - 02:34 PM I mean like foam or something else to go between the sleeping bags and the wooden berths. Most of the berths come without the "donkey's breakfast." |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Col K Date: 09 Apr 02 - 08:08 PM We remember you chantey ranger from Whitby last year, anything you can do to help us get to you and to perform with you again in the states would be very helpful.See you again sometime |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Abuwood Date: 13 Apr 02 - 04:08 AM Linda & I always carry padding! Trouble is airplane seats often don't account for this! It sounds cool to sleep on a ship, but I like the idea of Canada, we have Morris men in shellbacks too and a couple of Mummers groups if that goes well over there. What parts of Canada JohnB? My experience of Vancouver was lovely, kind og old fashioned, like Scotland with an American accent, to be honest the USA scares me. I am a country girl at heart and don't like big cities. Least I will be travelling with a bunch of huge blokes! |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: MMario Date: 13 Apr 02 - 12:52 PM Abuwood - Most of the US is country - huge tracts of country - It's just hard to get to those sections. |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: GUEST,chanteyranger Date: 13 Apr 02 - 01:11 PM Don't worry, Abuwood, the only people robbing Shellbacks would be crimps, and we don't have those anymore :-). It's not hard to get to the rural areas. Finding sea music gigs there could be challenging. It's of course up to you Shellbacks where you want to go, but let me know if you want West coast US venue contact info, plus a few East coast contacts and I'll PM you a list. Just let me know who the list should go to. chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Abuwood Date: 13 Apr 02 - 05:04 PM Great Thanks Chanty, give it to Treaties1 who started the thread, I think she is very keen on America. |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Celtic Soul Date: 13 Apr 02 - 07:39 PM Hey, just let us know when the big trip is being scheduled! As to the contact folks, I will go and do a little checking. I don't do most of the booking for my band. There are at least a few website links at our page, and from there some contact info. If you want any specific contact info, let me know, and I'll see what I can dredge up for you. :D |
Subject: RE: Help: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip From: Peter Kasin Date: 14 Apr 02 - 03:52 AM ...and I'll wear the t-shirt you (Abuwood) gave me at the Pier Inn. |

Sorry I've been missing again, I've just come back fron the UK's foremost traditional festival The National Folk Music Festival at Sutton Bonnington,Leicestershire where I had the pleasure of meeting David Jones from the Northern USA currently acting in New York City, and Louis Killen.I actually managed to lead three shanties over the weekend which is pretty good going in what is usually a very agricultural and industrial heritage type of festival. I will liase with Derek and as soon as possible try to get probable dates and follow up contacts. Thanks again be back soon. |
