Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: The Unicorn Man Date: 08 Feb 04 - 01:53 PM I don't know but the 29th Feb this year is a Sunday.I know this because 28th Feb is the Saturday of the first Charity Mic Nights at Thr Bull in Barton Le Clay, Beds. Tam-Lin are playing their final gig ever, and Hilary might be coming and it's the night before her Spotlight at StAlbans, and there might just be enough time to fit in another floor spot if you behave. It sounds like a date of a Dent Event that got cancelled without me knowing until I got there last year. If that is any help. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 08 Feb 04 - 02:18 PM I dont know either Lets try 20th feb then the 5th March Whats going to be happening at the Duke Of M? Why? Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Ross Date: 09 Feb 04 - 10:44 AM That's an idea Maybe I could contrive a novelty act that dispenses of twanging and singing altogether |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: The Unicorn Man Date: 09 Feb 04 - 12:29 PM And the really sad thing is Breezy will not be there. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST,The Stage Manager Date: 09 Feb 04 - 12:58 PM Have I got this right guys? Are you, in a round about way, suggesting that Breezy dispenses with the singing and twanging and stands around trouserless with bananas up his nose? Great Concept! Sounds like a dead cert for the Turner Prize, though not quite the thing you would expect to encounter down "The Legion". Although on the other hand, we did have a drag act at one stage last night. SM |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Dave Bryant Date: 10 Feb 04 - 06:03 AM Well you could always drag Breezy around while you're about it :-) |

Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Dave Bryant Date: 10 Feb 04 - 07:47 AM Breezy - which nights do your St Albans and district folk mafia events all run on ? I keep meaning to get over that way again sometime, but it's a bit of a rush on a week night. I first of all have to get back home (Mottingham) from Kingston and then drive via Blackwall and the M11. There's also the fact that Linda has a 14 year old son, and we therefore only tend to go any long distance when he's staying with his dad. It'll be quite a dash to get to "The Lion" at Eastwick tonight - and that's quite a lot nearer (it's not too far for you either). |

Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Dave Bryant Date: 10 Feb 04 - 09:50 AM A Sunday night would be fine John - so please consider me for one of the 'Spotlight' sessions. I'll try and get to one of your Friday nights - at least I don't have work in the morning - which is the normal venue, St Stephens Churh Hall or The Duke of Marlborough ? Martin - although I was born in Bedford (because of wartime evacuation) Barton's a bit far for me to drive on a Monday night after work - but I hope it goes well. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST Date: 10 Feb 04 - 10:43 AM Chesham? Since you ask... ...good responsive and appreciative turn out for the very excellent Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman last night. Some fine spots, too. Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 23 Feb 04 - 07:31 PM It must be the Road to Dundee with sound effects that left an indellible[sp]! mark. Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST, me again. Still no cookie Date: 24 Feb 04 - 05:21 AM Yes. Sorry for swearing. (See the thing is, Ernie, I don't write five new songs every day, so I've got to fill in the time somehow) |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 24 Feb 04 - 07:32 AM Ernie, I like that. We are the players who sing the songs that others write. Thats our part, without Peter Paul n Mary then Bob Dylan would have struggled. So learn a few Papavgeris songs and put your mark on them. So Bob has a hellova lot to thank P P M for, but Papavgeris can sing so its not so vital in his case. See ya Friday then sunday Oh lets p*****ce on Sat 6th March at the legion in St A with P A for B B later |

Back from Whitsundays (Q'Land) yesterday and (I can't believe it) it's bl***y raining in Sydney!! and cold (well... coldish). Hope all goes well Friday for the Lovely Hamish (no, sorry Hamish, the visualisation doesn't work), lovely Lorna and H. Good luck. Breezy, what's going on next Monday that you are organising? Don't forget that as well as it being St David's day it's Herga's 41st Birthday. You are not thinking of b***ering off somewhere else are you? |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Ross Date: 25 Feb 04 - 05:00 AM Guru - think you call it 'meet on the ledge' Hey - JB & George - what's this boasting about playing a gig at a nudist camp - I have reliable information that you bottled the gig I'm especially miffed as I played a gig at Speilplatz last Summer and was sat at the top of the stairs facing all comers I've never seen so many varieties of the human anatomy Trouble is, I was boiling and didn't know whether it was polite to take me shirt off |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST,The Stage Manager Date: 25 Feb 04 - 06:39 AM Hell's Teeth. I'm beginning to see this 'Sunday at the 'Legion' mularkey in a whole new 'orrible light. So Breezy wasn't joking when he suggested he might start playing with his trousers round his ankles.. Sounds like there could be more meat and veg on display down there Sunday than in the Market on Saturday. Bring a Casserole Guru! SM |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Dave Bryant Date: 25 Feb 04 - 06:54 AM Sounds like there could be more meat and veg on display down there Sunday than in the Market on Saturday. Not if it's Breezy - you should only need a very small casserole Guru ! |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 25 Feb 04 - 11:06 AM Moses will be there, well maybe. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST,The Stage Manager Date: 25 Feb 04 - 11:50 AM Dave, Your revelation has come as a complete surprise. I had no idea. From your detailed knowledge I take that you've been a party to these goings on for quite some time? So where does this "fully ventilated" style of singing originate? To be honest, I thought "open tuning" referred to something quite different. However, I have heard that in Opera Houses they sometimes fit their older tenors with jubilee clips in order to keep the b***ers tune. What do ageing folk singers use? bailer twine? Maybe we'll find out on Sunday. SM I presume El Greco is aware of all this? It certainly makes you wonder about those jaunts down to Devon. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Dave Bryant Date: 25 Feb 04 - 12:17 PM Sorry to disappoint you Stage Manager, but all my info on Breezy comes from the when time I used to go out with a lot of his cast-off ladies - who appeared to find my own equipment somewhat of an improvement. Mind you, I have been to "naturist" clubs many times - in fact Linda and I have been known to frequent such establishments quite recently. I have performed (musically I mean !) quite a few times in a natural state. A certain kentish morris side used to dance at one club annually - each year they "simplified" their kit until it consisted of bellpads baldricks and one extra bell hung from a certain part of the male anatomy. Dances with any low stickwork were not favoured on these outings. I wasn't expecting to perform in such a state at The Spotlight on the 9th of May, though (that's if it's still going to be on after these comments about John) - mind you perhaps I could prevail upon Essex Girl to perform "Joan the Leather Queen" in the costume which she wore at Stony Stratford . . . . . . |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: The Stage Manager Date: 25 Feb 04 - 02:14 PM Dave, At least the weather will be warmer in May. So Bare Naked Morris with bells on their willies eh? I'm surprised Breezy hasn't booked them for one of his "Singing to Trees" sessions. If you tell them its traditional they seem to go for anything round here. SM |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: My guru always said Date: 25 Feb 04 - 02:29 PM Haven't you lot been watching the weather forcast???? Non-stick casserole then..... |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 25 Feb 04 - 03:44 PM I'm saying nowt, at least mine didnt go wild in Woolwich!!!! BTW Dave have you finished paying? |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: The Stage Manager Date: 25 Feb 04 - 04:27 PM Wild in Woolwich???!!! There seem to be stones appearing in this thread that may better be left unturned. Until Friday. SM |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Feb 04 - 05:01 AM Tune: The In the crypt of Saint Mary's there once was folk singing, And young girls were seduced by Breezy's sweet tones. But after he'd had them, in my direction he chucked them, And I'd then have to put up with these young ladies' moans. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 26 Feb 04 - 05:30 AM for years and years, cos he didnt pay. Well we got to pull the punters in for Dave's Sunday at the Legion when you can see for yourself. Apparently he doesn't get to perform much these days. Do you still sing 'Second hand Rose'? The 'Charlton Chopper' , only its more the 'Woolwich Winkle' This could run and run, just like the man. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST,The Stage Manager Date: 26 Feb 04 - 06:21 AM Given the depths to which this thread has finally and inexorably sunk, I'd be grateful for some guidance as to how I'm meant to interpret: "Well we got to pull the punters in for Dave's Sunday at the Legion when you can see for yourself. Apparently he doesn't get to perform much these days." SM |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST, the lovely Hamish, ain't got no cookies Date: 26 Feb 04 - 06:39 AM I don't know - you just can't get the staff these days. Don't tell me I'll have to start my own thread for me and Lorna at the King Harry tomorrow? How demeaning that would be. And we're having full dress rehearsal at Stortfolk tonight - that's how seriously we take a Jonno gig. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST,The Stage Manager Date: 26 Feb 04 - 08:14 AM You're in good company No Cookie, Harvey Andrews had to create his own thread too. Take it as a complement. The Word has got round that you're at the King Harry tomorrow and the queues are already beginning to form. Pr***cing? Isn't that taking things a bit far? If word gets out people might begin to think you aren't up to it. SM |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST,, not really - it's me again Date: 26 Feb 04 - 08:21 AM Well it's true I'm not up to it. I'm not up to anything. I've got my hands on the desk where anyone can see. Honest. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Feb 04 - 08:25 AM "Apparently he doesn't get to perform much these days" I don't know if Breezy was referring to musical or other types of performance - but I'm sure that Essex Girl will vouch that he is incorrect in both cases. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: Essex Girl Date: 26 Feb 04 - 08:40 AM Essex Girl can't imagine what you're talking about!!! Dave might not venture as far as St albans very often but is performing well in Kent, South east London and parts of Essex. |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 26 Feb 04 - 08:49 AM That new boy on Sunday was in fact Jim Faupel, look up his web site |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: My guru always said Date: 26 Feb 04 - 04:40 PM Can vouch that Dave is performing well in Kent & you can reserve a seat for me at his Spotlight in May, well worth hearing! Ummm, shall I be demeaned & start a thread on my Spotlight this Sunday??? I haven't started one for ages....... |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: GUEST,The Stage Manager Date: 27 Feb 04 - 05:06 AM Guru, I recommend the DIY option. If you have to wait for you-know-who there's no telling what you might end up with, or discover you're letting yourself in for. Frankly, some of the recent imaginings from that direction give rise to considerable concern. BTW bring a tenderiser as well as the casserole, some of the steak round here is well past its sell by date. SM |
Subject: RE: Sunday 'Spotlight' St Albans From: breezy Date: 27 Feb 04 - 07:02 AM you steak for your self S M us hornivours are in our prime. You should have seen our mellowtonal Jazz guitarist operating last night. |
