Well, my wife and I are about 4 ½ weeks away from beginning our trip to England. My new CD is finished and will be ready for distribution in 2 weeks. The following itinerary is what we have planned so far. I hope to meet as many UK Catters as possible and so if any of you cannot make it to one of my gigs, please let us know if there would be some other place where we might get together.

August 3 - Leave Anchorage
August 4 - Arrive at Gatwick Airport, take the train to Broadstairs Folk Festival
August 5 - Guest artist at Tom and Barbara Brown's sing around
August 6 - Breakfast gig at The Old Curiosity Shop in Broadstairs
               - Afternoon gig at Harper's Wine Bar in Broadstairs
August 7 - Lunch time guest at Sing Along session at The Neptune
               - Afternoon guest at Folk Club at Broadstairs Cultural Center
               - Evening performance at the Bandstand on Broadstairs Promenade
Aug 8-13 - Sightseeing in London
August 8 - Guest artist at Herga Folk Club in Middlesex
August 10 - Guest artist at St. Albans Folk Club
August 13 - Musical evening somewhere near Hull
August 14 - Staying with Barb'ry in Churchtown
August 15 - Guest artist at Four Fools Folk Club in Adlington
August 17 - Travel to Llangenneth, S. Wales to visit with Sussex Carole and Crane Driver
August 20 - Sightseeing in the countryside,
August 21 - Visit with rumanci and more sightseeing
August 22 - Visit with El Greko
August 23 - March through downtown London, 700th anniversary of death of William Wallace
August 24 - Bullet train to Paris
August 26 - Bullet train back to El Greko's house
August 27 - Return home to Anchorage.

So send me your ideas for what to see, and where to stop and anything else you can think of that will make our trip even that much better. We can't wait to see England. We look forward to being with old friends again and making new friends along the way.

The St Albans gig will be on Wed 10th Aug at the world famous Windward club in the ultimate acoustic setting of the brick walled, stone floor Barn at the Duke of Marlborough.

El Grek , George Papavgeris will be hosting the night.

Its a battle of audiences and its between the Herga and Windward as to the best in chorus singing in the area.

Doors open 7.45, non-smoking

at the 'Real' folk club in St Albans

This Friday 8th July Pete Smith and John Buckley two outsanding guitarists are the main feature

Fri 15th John Breeze brings the curtain down on 4 years of Windward, singers welcome on this evening.

There is no contest. Windward has the best choruses - when the Herga members are visiting... To put it another way, Windward has the Herga Wall OF Sound.

So close yet so far! Sheryl and I will be in Scotland from August 3rd to the 14th, mostly for the World Science Fiction Convention with some sightseeing in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Also probably a side trip to Loch Lomond and surroundings. We'll wave from across the border... 8-)

Liz, thanks for the "free London" website. I have it bookmarked and will search through it more carefully when I have time.

Ebbie, I promise to take lots of pictures. That way I can look through them next winter and warm myself up with the memories.

Nutty, this is our first trip to England, not our last. We only have three weeks and we want to experience all that we can in that time, But I know we will miss much of the country. We will just have to return.

Carole, can't wait to see yoou again. Llantrissant sounds like fun, this trip is going to be GREAT!!! See you in about a month.

Liz, nothing could keep me away. Not even psycho, wacko terrorists. Tawmmie and I don't scare that easy. I am saddened though for the folks who were killed and injured. I remember walking around the rubble of the World Trade Center towers 2 years ago and trying to envision it on September 11th.

I sincerely hope that Londoners recover quickly from this tragedy. We will plan on a little extra paranoia on the part of the Customs Agents when we fly into Gatwick on the 4th. I'm sure the tube and buses will be up and running again by the time we arrive, but if not, I may take you up on your offer of tour guide service. We will see you soon.

Seamus, its good to hear from you. A word of warning on the Clydesdale song. Don't sing it at a bluegrass festival when the beer garden is serving Budweiser products and most of the audience has a tall boy or glass of the "King of Beers" in their hands. We have just finished my last performance at Broadstairs festival. My songs were well received and they sound like they would like to have me back if I can ever afford to come over here again. England is terrific, nice people, good weather, and great musicians. Tomorrow we head for George P's house and begin our visit to the London area. We met Bassic, Rock Chick, Giok, and Vectis. Can't wait to meet some more.

We are leaving London tomorrow morning and driving up to see Zany Mouse and Mick. First time driving on these little roads with these crazy drivers. I'm glad my wife is driving and all I have to do is navigate. Mike's Carharts song is hilarious but I don't know if everyone knows what Carharts are. I don't care how often I hear it, I laugh until tears run down my cheeks. But all of his songs are great and when you are right there to hear him sing them, it is just a great experience.

Well, we turned the rental car in this morning and are now back at George (El Greko) and Vanessa's home again. Tonight I'll be listening to the Herga singers and tomorrow we march in the William Wallace parade through downtown London, then Wednesday we take the bullet train to Paris for a couple nights before heading home to Alaska again. We have met many wonderful people and seen so much of the beauty of the English countryside. We've been terrified by the narrow roads a time or two, but the trip has been great so far. I'm not looking forward to going back to work again next Monday, but it will be good to get back home. More later after we get back from Paris.

After an eventful day (3 times round the North Circular and a total of 120miles), not remembering where the club was, and having the directional talents of a stunned wallaby, I managed to find the club and had a fantastic evening (See also 'Great night at Herga' thread above) with lots of good friends.

It's not often you find Alaskans in car parks in Harrow....

But it's worth it when you do!

Not only he was there, fully bekilted, dagger in sock, he also got to meet Prince Michael of Albany (a Stuart of course, who would have been king today, if Scotland had been an independent kingdom). Indeed, Mike marched most of the way alongside him, among the Prince's bodyguards. So it would not be surprising if you saw him on TV. Local London News did not show the march, but BBC Scotland would have. Mike would have stood out not only by his size, but also because he was wearing a simple white shirt on top, which would have stood out among the jackets.

We are back from Paris, had a wonderful time, enjoyed the many beautiful parks and monuments. Very few people to speak English to though. Climbed the tower, boated on the Seine, strolled the Champs Elysee, wandered the hallowed halls of the Louve (Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo), ate expensive meals with weird sauces, generally had a fabulous time.

Tonight is our last night before jetting home to the frozen north. We are sharing the final night with George and Vanessa and remembering all the fantastic people we have met and the wonderful time we have had. Thank you to all who made our trip more enjoyable. We can't wait until we return for another go.

Late plane from Gatwick caused us to miss our connecting flight in Minneapolis. So, many hours later and an extra flight to Denver, we have finally arrived home. The only problem, my guitar didn't arrive with our other luggage. Hopefully, they will find it soon and have it for me tomorrow. Its good to be home though. 2:30 am here in Anchorage, which means we've been traveling for 29 hours. Must go to bed.

Well, my guitar finally arrived this morning at about 8:30 am. It is in fine condition thanks to Calton Co of Canada. We miss England already. All the great friends who put us up and put up with us will be remembered fondly for many years. But we do wish we were still there. We both must return to work tomorrow and see if our noses can still rest comfortably on the grind-stone.

To George and Vanessa, Bill and Janet, Mick and Rhiannon, Andy and Barbara, Andrew and Carole, and George and Vanessa again, who allowed us to share their homes: Your generosity and friendship made our trip into the best vacation we have ever had.

We have a long, cold, dark winter coming up, but we know it will be warmed by the great memmories of our time with all of you.
