Subject: How about some good news for a change?
From: Kim C
Date: 10 Nov 00 - 11:36 AM

In spite of election BS, nasty weather and PMS to boot, I am in a surprisingly good mood today. I have a job, a place to live, a fiddle to play, a great husband, three furry critters, millions of fabulous friends, and the season's first batch of split-pea soup cooking at home in the Crock-Pot. Down to almost 120 lbs., and last year's trousers are too big. Mrs. Spaw and jeffp's kitty are on the mend. God's in his heaven, all's right with the world (mostly).

Anyone else?

Yep Kim - I've got a new job, some songs to sing, Mudcat gathering next weekend - downloaded ICQ and Paltalk. Two gorgeous daughters and a Dave to cuddle at night.....

I think life is so full of shit sometimes, its worth celebrating the times when its good.

Cheers - and well done!

Hey Kim, your POST is good news.

Regarding this weeks Political silliness, we can all be thankful that we aren't Al or Dubya. Their dreams of glory will always be tainted by controversy....and that is NOT gonna be good news to them.

My good news is:

My partner Heather.

Our two cats

A roof over our heads

wonderful friends

A roomful of instruments to play in the basement

Good progress (thanks to some Mudcatters) on the melodeon this week.

But our hearts go out to Patrish during her difficult time. Good times will come again.

Rick

Kim C: Ummmm. That split-pea soup does sound good!

Good thread to start at this particular time, I think. Things have gotten a bit tense in some of the threads.

I too, have so much to be thankful for!

Why is bad news so much more likely to be shared?
My good news:

My spouse and I are in a calm and warm and friendly period after a volitile and scary late summer/early autumn. We are still tentative and shy a bit, but we're appreciating the good in each other and even remembering that there were some good reasons why we got married in the first place!

My two wonderful children have stellar report cards!

My house is getting some of the TLC it needs!

Ewan McVicar and Deb Cowan will be here a week from today, and a week from tomorrow there'll be a NH Mudcat bash to end all bashes!

I had the final inspection on my basement workshop Wednesday. There's still a few details to finish but for now, I've started building a hammered dulcimer down there for my wife and look forward to many pleasant hours doing so, and several other instruments in the future. My seven daughters are all healthy and doing brilliantly in school and even the teens are starting to get a grasp on the concept of personal responsibility and that their parents are not their enemies. And one of our two chickens laid her first egg the other day.

I am a geezer. I am NOT a Pollyanna, but I occasionally cheer me up by reminding myself that no matter how bad a lot of things seem to be now, they were much worse not so long ago.

Problems in the Mideast? At least both sides keep trying for peace in spite of all attempts to derail the process. I remember when they only talking that was done was done with weapons. Bad news from Russia? I am a member of the bomb shelter generation. I remember cowering under my school desk during the drills. Now we've got Americans and Russians sharing a space station. Racial tensions? I remember when we couldn't use the same bathroom and interracial dating was a hanging offense. China coming down hard on dissidents again? I remember when the PRC and the West were mutually terra incognita. Now the mainlanders are surfing the same sites I am. Bad news from Africa? I remember apartheid. I remember when the smart money said it would take the mother of all blood baths to eliminate it. Dead American sailors? I remember the body bags from Viet Nam.

Is everything just peachy today? Of course not! We humans have still got a very long way to go, but we've also made some progress and it can't hurt to occasionally remind ourselves of that.

I'm going to Pittsburgh on Monday to take my beautiful Italian accordion to get fixed. The lovely old Italian man who is going to fix it is going to do it for very little money (relatively speaking). A different accordion repair person had previously pronounced a death sentence upon it, so this is a wonderful development.

My son is a fine human being for whom I have not only great love, but also deep friendship and respect. And he is a happy and healthy young man.

I have a warm and dry place to live. I have indoor plumbing and electricity, and a computer with internet access. These are things that a lot of people probably take for granted, but I have, at one time or another, lived without each of them. So I am thankful for all of them.

I've made friends with some of the wonderful people of the Mudcat. To me, this is a great gift.

I've learned how to play Kate Martyn's Waltz on my box. It's taken me a couple of months to figure out how to play this piece, so it feels like a great accomplishment to me. Everything's relative, I guess.

Thank you for the thread. I have been wallowing in depression the last few days, and it's good to be reminded to focus on the positive things that we have. For me that would be having a nice home, a car that works, three jobs that pay well, two boys that never have to be reminded to do their homework and are getting straight A's, a beautiful-loving daughter who lights up anyone's day who comes across her, a mother who is working three jobs and sacrificed her retirement funds and a bit of her sanity to help me raise the kids and have food on the table,a very regal furry friend,a wonderful band-mate who gets us lots of gigs, wonderful music and instruments to learn and play and be merry. WOW, I can hardly remember what I was depressed about. Thanks again.

I ran into an old friend that I hadn't seen for some years and she asked me how I was. I found myself anwering, without thinking about it, "I'm having a really good life".

I am still passionately in love with my wife after 15 years of marraige. We laugh together, walk down the street holding hands, and have sex often.

I have a great job working for and with great people building and selling musical instruments. Part of my job requirement is that I be a folk musician, and I get to talk to musicians all day long. I get to be the boss without the owners expecting me to be an asshole. There is no office politics, rumor mongering, cliques, infighting, or back stabbing at work.

We just bought a small house in Seattle that is beautiful and affordable. If you know anything about the housing market in Seattle, you'll know how rare and lucky that is. Poorly built cottages sell for $200,000 here. Our house is a very, very nice house, with two cats in the yard.

I have a large collection of beautiful musical instruments, most of which I can play competently. My wife does also, and we perform together as much as we want (two to four gigs a month). We've recorded four albums that I still like and they've all gotten really good reviews in major folk music magazines. People from all over the world send us money for them.

I have several very close friends and lots of very warm acquaintances. I'm going to be jamming with many of them tonight at a music party.

I am reasonably healthy. I'm gaining weight and losing my hair and still feel OK about how I look. I'm a middle aged man who is not attracted to 22 year old women, thank god.

John

My husband's father is doing pretty well considering the two strokes about ten years ago, the emphysema and parkinson's, and the heart attack a week ago. His family has had a wonderful time with him since those strokes and is confident that although they now see the coming of his passing away, they will see him again in heaven. His oldest son, my husband, is doing well about this despite being the farthest from home and the one who has always looked after family situations, and his younger brother is doing an excellent job playing that role now. There have been a whole bunch of people praying over this and keeping in touch with me about it. And the needs of my mother-in-law, to talk about this, have helped her see me in a new light that will heal many past issues that arose from her previous perceptions of me.

I am out of a bad job situation and have retained my commitment to the organization, my reputation, and what I learned in that setting not only before it went wrong but during the worst parts of it and the aftermath.

My dog still speaks to me despite so many Mudcat hours I forgot she had spots. My daughter's and son's cats have stopped shi**ing on the floor in the corner of the living room at least tmeporarily now that I have redeemed that corner by setting it up as a home office. Soon there will be a new computer there to learn, and the present one has been doing pretty well.

I finally got the tiebacks up on three of the LR windows whose curtains came back from the cleaners 9 months ago and which were hung up on the windows 2 months ago, and the remaining curtains and tiebacks are still clean and neat in the dry cleaners bag in case I get around to them.

I play slide geetar now and have two great online teachers from this wacky Mudcat place. I have a houseful of music to hear and play, and sufficient instruments and equipment to do as much as my current skills support. And I found a new local periodic open mike-jam opportunity after there not having been one since we moved here and since I became a performer.

I have an online prayer chain going through e-mail that is blessing many lives, especially mine.

The other good news is that God is good, providing for me and mine abundantly, in so many ways I could not begin to list them.

And I have this thread to look to as an example of Mudcat at its best, during a tough week.

~Susan

Its all in the attitude! Great thread Kim!!

We're no longer in te dark about Karen's problems and she's improving nicely.

The boys had a great time with Connie and Wayne and I am so happy to have them all in my life.

I've actually enjoyed the talking heads and the election thing. We may be complete fuckups, but what a country!

The stupid Weimaraner is keeping my feet warm as I type and Moggy, the Cornish Rex if staring at me from his high spot atop the desk here. The Cockatiel is chattering away and they are all happy to have some time to do what animals do best.......love us.

The house is a mess and I really don't care. I'll get to it tomorrow.

I think we'll eat supper again together in Karen's hospital room and enjoy the little bit of normalcy that it provides.

I have a reason to buy a new tool I've been wanting and although I don't have the money, I can't do the project without it, so...........!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing needs restrung.

I got in two good jokes on threads last night and one serious post that made me feel good about the give and take of this joint.

I am blessed with a worldwide group of friends here that few are lucky enough to have.

Love to you all.

Spaw

I'm grateful for winter's bounty of music. In the summertime with people traveling and out kayaking and hiking and fishing, the homemade music quotient in this town goes way down. But we're back into the long music-friendly evenings and afternoons.

And last night I saw la Boheme done by our local lyric opera- what a treat. The music was soaring in my head for hours after.

My friends'and family's health are all stable at the moment and considering the chanciness of life itself that is not to be taken for granted.

I guess the best news is that there is always the opportunity to make things better or just to hang on and wait things out. (The ability to hang on is an acquired talent for me!)

Yesterday I spent the morning cleaning up the gardens at the local Scottish Rite Temple, attended the Veterans' Day ceremony, had lunch and went antique hunting with a dear friend in the afternoon, and spent this afternoon visiting every exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. I could do all that because - although tired - I am still in remission!!!! Life is truly good.

Had a very nice weekend with my Mom, and nobody even thought of getting snippy. Went shopping, got a $100 dress for $5, that is perfect for my upcoming conference.

Last week has my first parent-teacher conference about my twins, now in Kindergarten. Knew they were smart but --- Willie's being invited into the UVA (!) Gifted program, and his teacher has him in Advanced Groups for both reading and math, and Timmie, despite all his prematuriry-based developmental "delays" is ALSO above-average, and is not having any of the problems I'd feared with reading or writing, and the teacher has to look for ways to keep him challenged in math! Boy, putting them in separate classes has really, really helped!

Even my X2B is being polite, if not considerate!

And at work, the catalog is almost done (whew!) and the prep for the trade show is well underway, so things are relaxing here too, less frantic, ready to gear up for the next round after $mas. My boss is still the best manager in the universe, and my coworkers are a lot of fun, I have a new huge (to me) office with a great view...hmmm... a lot of stuff IS right with the world!

Hey, even the democratic process is working. The only problem there is that we aren't used to seeing it work, we're used to having it work and then we see the results. But unlike many, many other contested elections around the world, no one has rioted or looted, there is no Civil War looming (how would that be? To have a non-geographically-based Civil War! The War Between The Parties!), nobody's been shot, sure some folks are brandishing banners, let'm, it's The American Way. As long as they aren't bashing each other with them!

The kitty is indeed well on the mend. She goes back this afternoon for her first follow-up. She's eating, drinking, demanding love, walking around surprisingly well, and has even jumped up onto the bed, despite doctor's orders to the contrary.

We brewed a batch of brown ale yesterday (Bibi's Brown Ale) to celebrate and first indications are that it will be delicious. We'll know more in a week, and it will be drinkable in about a month. I have a job that I love working with people I like and respect. Bonnie and I are starting some new hobbies that promise to be a lot of fun and will be synergistic. We're planning a combined workshop so we can work at different things together. The kids seem to be making something of themselves.

All in all, not a bad life.

I had such a good time at NOMAD, the daily routine is pretty tame. However, I'm able to keep a roof over my head, pay all my bills, have enough left over, and my dog Seamus, likes me. Now, if it wern't for the fact that my oldest daughter is a republican, life would be ok! :-)

Over the weekend I got DOWN and BOOGIED on two long-standing communication crapolas and said what I REALLY THOUGHT about some really DUMB SH*T!!!!

This trend actually started in recent weeks, and even I, in my confusion, could not fail to notice it and get behind it.

This means that the Internal Paralyzer has died for good!!! The translator, the censor, the interpreter, and the fixer had all died, but man!! The paralyzer was a bitch! Loving people is MUCH easier without those idiots clamoring!!!

(Ebbie, I know about holding on, too. This was the bad counterfeit of that. Holding on, yes, doing no harm when no good can be figured out, or done, yes.)

Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets see.... Tonight I get to see a Ricky Scaggs concert in a great venue, My group performed yesterday to about 400 people and I didn't screw anything up that anyone would have noticed, the octave mandolin I have on order should be ready next month, I think I've decided what pickup to put in it { thanks to another thread running currently }, a charitable function that I work on had their best year ever so a lot of hungry people will get food, and wonderful friends threw us a baby shower over the weekend and we cleaned up.

But by far the most important blessing is that every indication is that the twins are both growing and healthy inside my wife. Her health has been good { NO morning sickness }, and her mood has been exceptional considering what she's going through. We've almost finished painting the babies room and it looks great. Bretta is "radiant" - but she's a little tired of people telling her that. Life doesn't get much better that this. I am a lucky man.

Life is goood. Last Friday I finally signed the separation papers. No typos, no disagreements about the language, and I think it will come out the way I want, with neither of us being cheated. Finally, after nineteen months. Through this, I've found, and rediscovered good and true friends hwo listened patiently and did wonders for my self esteem. I've gotten on better terms with my mother, and heard the hilarious stories my family couldn't tell me about my husband while we were still hitched. I have a job I love, a home, a working car, loving teenagers, cats (including two self-appointed guardian kittens), and twenty acres of woods on the property to enjoy. I'm rediscovering things I'd put aside. I joined Mudcat. And Kim C started this great thread, so I didn't have to start a fresh thread to thank everybody for those hugs a couple of weeks ago. Thanks!

My dad's cancer tests all came back negative.

I'm going to spend Thanksgiving with my sister & her family in Texas.

We picked a new chair for next year's state Sacred Harp convention who has already arranged for the location, singing school teachers, and group rates for motels -- 11 months before we have it!

We've had a warm fall & no snow so far.

With no disrespect intended--I'm on good terms w/ God & can look myself in the mirror without feeling shame. That would be enough, but--I like the maturity that middle age has brought me; there's a man in my life who thinks I'm the best woman in the world; I have 2 healthy children who love me; and I'm in the most stable, satisfying job so far. I'm thankful for each day of life & the opportunity to make the world better by my little bit. That felt good! Thanks, Kim! :)

AwwwwwwRIGHT, Burke and bbc and all the rest of you!

Last night Mister and I had supper with friends and had a great time listening to their dad and his pard talk about the local music scene back in the 50s-60s. Great stories! Plus no one mentioned the e****ion all night long.

This morning I had an e-mail from my pal in Ireland that I met 12 years ago when I was a college student on a study trip. She is a great gal and I don't get to talk to her often enough. I hope to get to see her in person one day!

Let's keep going!

A wonderful weekend with four friends and not nearly enough time for all the conversation possible, museums to poke around in, a wife who seems to still be fond of me, two sons who are turning into themselves and not people I would have imagined (but what do I know?),and a resolution that if music is going to happen I better not wait for someone else to call me up and start it. A slaty, grey day with promise of heavy rain: my favorite, really. I think I will go home and make pierogies, start a fire in the woodstove and play the twelve-string.And another birthday goes round the yearclock. Breathe out.

Walked into an overwhelming promotion about four months ago, seriously doubted whether I could make a dent in the accumulated madness, and found I could. Now, they seem to think I am indispensable. Just shows to go ya, dunnit?

Wife just revoering from three days straight knocked out by the flue and I started to come down with it myself, but I dug in and said screw that noise, and loaded self up with vitayums an' such. So far, so good -- the bear is in retreat!

I have a spectacularly talented musican for a daughter, and despite being a teenager she still maintains communication and tries (most of the time) to be courteous even though she knows perfectly well that we, he rparents, are lost cause, being over thirty.

Funny stuff. Keep getting phone solicitations asking if I want a free trip to Orlando. Sure I do. They don't have the faintest idea where the people they call, live.

Like Greyeyes, the job, hair, weight, bifocals things are minuses but in my case outweighed by the pluses: wife still with me after 30 years (if we get to Dec 19th!), house now paid for, books and records all around, friends who still tolerate me, my own teeth (less a couple of gaps)and remarkably good health given my enjoyment of food and drink and sedentary occupation. And Mudcat to sound off on, to offload old jokes on and to help me make it through the working day. Beats Phyllosan!

Shorty is the somewhat tempramental thingie what delivers our words of wisdom (sic) to the great internet God.He has brothers....Ragtime and Loki, who can be equally feisty. Max manages them with a whip and a chair and feeds them beer and pizza.
