Long ago I heard this parody of the classic Lauryn Hill/Roberta Flack song "Killing me softly".

Anyone know the lyrics to "Killing Me Softly with Kungfu"?

Seems it was Michael Spiro (probably not the percussionist), on an album entitled Live in Concert; The Official Bootleg. probably vinyl, circa 1985.

Thanks,

Jody

I remember now. I was someone at the NJ Folk project say... 15 years ago when I was there playing with Grand Picnic.

I have been singing this song since the late 70s or early 80s. Learned it from a friend who learned it from and said Artie Traum wrote the parody.

I had a friend who sang it back around 1976. Only a line or two, never the whole song, so I thought it was one of his uncountable, half-finished parodies. Never knew it was actually a real song!

You've piqued my interest - anyone out there have the lyrics?

Jay

First out of the gate, early 1970s: Don Livingston, Livingston's Gone To Texas, Asco, DL 003, Track A5, Killing Me Softly With Kung Fu. Credit to the originals Fox & Gimbel and David Bradley for the comedy. Available on ytube.

Later release of a live show: The David Bradley Story, Mega Records, 1982, 2xLP, Track B2, Kung Fu. Credit to the originals Fox & Gimbel. Not so easy to find.

“Picture in your mind: Frank Zappa, Lenny Bruce, Mary Poppins, the Wicked Witch of the West, and that covers David Bradley.” [Liner Notes]

PS: Bradley was also in on the so-called 'cosmic cowboy' thing in the one LP band “O.D. Corral.” No idea what he's been up to lately.

Killing Me Slowly With Their Noise (c1977)

I heard it was a good school in every single way
I thought I'd manage well until I met 2A
They looked so young and sweet but that had vanished in 2 weeks.
They were smearing their food on my windows, telling my life to their Mums
Killing me slowly with their noise, killing me slowly with their noise
Telling my whole life to their mums, killing me slowly with their noise.

But their uniforms were tidy, on the surface all was right
Willie Golding called me Sir but he carried a flick knife
Debbie, Adele and Cherie specialised in crude graffiti
And smoking all break in the toilets, leading the First Year astray
Killing me slowly etc.

And now i'm getting grey hairs, ruining my chance of dates
Friends say I'm ageing fast but I'm only twenty.........
My throat is red and sore from screaming out louder more and more
They're asking me for for my phone number, saying they'll meet me up town.
Killing me slowly etc.

The difference between Kung Fu and Tai Chi:
Kung Fu hurts like hell and Tai Chi defects every blow as if by an invisible feather.
