Subject: Lyr Add: MARQUES (Hughie Jones) From: GUEST,Kathy Inglis Date: 21 Jul 19 - 01:31 PM Here they are: MARQUES (Hughie Jones) I met her first in Yarmouth, standing by the quay Dressed up in gaudy colours, she looked alright to me. I knew nothing of her past; I could tell she'd been around. Her age it did not matter; in her beauty I could have drowned. Chorus: Goodbye to you Marques, to Portugal and Spain. I'll miss you on the Mersey when the tall ships come again. I got to know her well that morning; I felt her breathing, heard her sighs. Rising and falling beneath me, she brought tears to my eyes. It was clear she wanted freedom, to cut her ties and run. I left her in the evening, sailed eastwards from the sun. Though others may grow to love her despite her cranky ways Her cooing and her screaming on calm and stormy days They'll beautify and pamper her, accede to her every whim Yet secretly they understand, her heart they cannot win. And now she's gone forever, her lovers left to mourn A cruel triangle victim, where hearts from men are torn It was finished in a moment, damned beyond reprieve Despite her film-star temperament her memory will not leave. |

Subject: ADD: Flowers of Bermuda (Ken Stevens) From: vectis Date: 25 May 26 - 01:02 AM Same ship, same incident, different take on the subject by the late Ken Stevens of Southampton. Flowers of Bermuda (Ken Stevens) But we could still smell the flowers of Bermuda, Borne on the air, in the teeth of the wind. We could still smell the flowers of Bermuda, We’re freezing to death. Isn’t nature unkind? Let her go down she’s too old to sail, Let her go down she can’t take the gale. Let her go down and we’ll float away, And let her go down out here in the bay. Let her go down she can’t brave the waves, Let her go down she’s too old to save. Let her go down and then she’ll be free, She’s foundering now in these heavy seas. Let her go down her hatches are gone, Let her go down she can’t carry on. Let her go down she’s too far from shore, Let her go down she can’t take any more. The Marques was a British-registered barque that sank during the Tall Ships Races in 1984 Polish training ship the Zawisza Czarny, picked up 8 survivors & 1 body. On the night of 2 June the ship ran into a gale. Just after 4am of 3 June she was hit by a sudden squall and a large wave and was knocked down onto her starboard side. The ship had been converted to a sail training and charter cruise ship, she had retained the main cargo hatch from her days as a commercial vessel. When she was knocked down the main hatch was breached and water flooded into the interior of the ship. She sank in less than a minute, with the loss of 19 of her 28 crew members, including the owner. The last owner had repeatedly avoided a routine safety check of the ship that had been requested by British authorities; as the outcome of such a check remains unknown, it is unclear if the ship's stability was problematic and, if so, if the check would have detected it. |
