Subject: Info appeal - Ivinghoe Plough Stots From: BobL Date: 25 Apr 15 - 03:36 AM Once upon a time there was a Youth Hostel - now closed - in the village of Ivinghoe, the wardens being Jim & Jean Chaplin, a wonderful couple. Running the hostel kept them too busy to pursue their folkie interests, beyond organising barn dances on a fairly regular basis. However at some time, a group of hostellers got together to learn longsword dancing and a mummers' play, performing them under the name of the "Ivinghoe Plough Stots". Are there any ex-hostellers (or indeed current but no longer youthful hostellers) out there who took part in these activities and would be willing to share their memories? |

Subject: RE: Anyone remember Ivinghoe Plough Stots? From: cptsnapper Date: 25 Apr 15 - 04:35 AM Hullo. I'm George Norris and I played there although I can't remember much about it - or indeed lots of things - but I'm still in contact with Dusty Pulver who might. I'll ask him. |

From: GUEST,Dusty Pulver Date: 25 Apr 15 - 08:58 AM I have photos of them performing Ivinghoe Plough Stots and tapes of performances in the town hall. Subject: RE: Anyone remember Ivinghoe Plough Stots? From: GUEST,Guest, S Date: 01 Feb 24 - 07:47 AM Alas, 'twas long before my interest in the "folk scene" was piqued (that was mostly by Irish bands in the 80s), but in the mid-70s a teacher called Margaret and I organised a good few weekend school visits to YHA Ivinghoe, a great place to take the East End kids and 'twas always very welcoming. I can't add anything to the thread topic but thanks for rekindling some really pleasant memories! It's sad to hear the hostel is no more. There are some lovely places nearby within walking distance. I've kept my YHA membership, though the last time I stayed in a hostel was in 1990! |

Subject: RE: Anyone remember Ivinghoe Plough Stots? From: GUEST Date: 18 Jun 26 - 05:29 PM Stuart Wiltshire. I sang at Ivinghoe regularly late 60s- early 70s, and started playing Peter Warden's 12 bass accordion to stand in for him playing for the Ivinghoe Ploughstots. As a result I bought a 72 bass accordion and played for Redcar Sword Dancers and Belfagan Womens Morris. I continue to play English concertina with Blue Jam Folk in Penrith and sing regularly at the local folk club. I appeared on stage at Ivinghoe Folk Festivals with Rob Simms, Peter Warden and Maggie Boswell as Ivinghoe Folk and danced at many ceilidh nights in the Town Hall. I met my wife Margaret while on a corn dolly weekend at Ivinghoe Y H. |

Subject: RE: Anyone remember Ivinghoe Plough Stots? From: GUEST Date: 20 Jun 26 - 11:27 AM I took school parties to Ivinghoe youth hostel a good few times in the seventies (and am still a member of the YHA even today!) I well remember Jim the warden, who always loved having our school groups and who always made us feel so welcome. One of our visits was in the hottest part of the legendary summer of 1976 and all the fields were parched brown! We had a great time at the village fair on the green one day when our kids got all dressed up. Sadly, all that predated my interest in folk music, but thanks for the reminder anyway. I must dig out my photos some time! |
