I've been trying to learn the song "Jar of Porter" from a Dubliners CD, but can't quite make out all of the words in verse 2:

When I was young and No drop of milk now would I take My father "Give the child a jar of porter"

If anyone knows the song and can supply the missing bits, I'd be very grateful.

The form processor seems to have done some damage to my layout of the lyrics in the verse, so I'll try and put it differently:

It's the verse beginning "When I was young and...." and I can't make out the end of the first or third lines of the verse. I think I've more or less got the rest of the song.

When I was young in cradle . . .,
No drop of milk now would I take,
Me father upped and had his spake,

The end of that first of the three lines sounds like 'take' as well. The third line is right enough.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob

Thanks for the help with those words. I thought it sounded like "cradle cake" or "cradle take" at the end of the first line, but neither seemed to make any sense. Still, it rhymes with the rest of the verse.

Cheers,

- Magnus

A JAR OF PORTER

CHORUS: Toora loora loora la, toora loora loora la
Toora loora loora la, give the child a jar of porter.

If you want your child to grow, your child to grow, your child to grow,
If you want your child to grow, give 'im a jar of porter. CHORUS

When I was young and cradle cake, no drop of milk now would I take.
Me father up then had his spake: "Give the child a jar of porter." CHORUS

When I am dead and in my grave, I hope for me a prayer you'll say,
And as you're passing by, that you'll throw in a jar of porter. CHORUS

And when I reach the golden gates, I hope I'll not have long to wait.
I'll call Saint Peter aside and say, "Brought y'up a jar of porter." CHORUS

[Traditional. Performed by The Dubliners.]

Anyone have any knowledge of an early recording or know where this song first appeared in a collection?
