Subject: Cathedral Bells From: GUEST,mawwall123@aol.com Date: 30 May 00 - 09:08 AM Around 1963 I heard a folk group called The Wayfarers sing this song. I'd love to get the rest of the words and chords for it; it really is a pretty thing. Cathedral Bells rang soft their song To knell our night of love. Tis oft that I can heard them still The gentle ringing of --- (and then a word I can't make out) If you know the lyrics or the group (3 guys who played around South Carolina and recorded one album that I know of) please email me at the address above. Thank you Anne Wallace |
Subject: Lyr Add: CATHEDRAL (from The Wayfarers) From: raredance Date: 07 Jun 00 - 10:43 PM CATHEDRAL (Miller-Socher, recorded The Wayfarers at the Hungry I (RCA LPM-2735, 1963)
I was young and wandered far,
A maid of raven hair and eyes,
She begged me stay and keep our love,
We warred upon the seas of green,
O death is not the worst of things Comments: I don't know much about French cathedrals and even less French itself. I was pretty proud of myself for figuring out Orleans (or-lee on) on the third take. I made a feeble attempt at phonetics for the other cathedral. Maybe somebody can solve that puzzle with a three-syllable name. I didn't even try phonetics for the short line after the last "Notre Dame (no-trah-dom in the song). I have unresolved questions about the authors/composers, Miller-Socher. The Wayfarers were Tom Adams, Dick Baily, Ray Blouin, and Sean Bonniwell. None of them are Miller or Socher. Socher, whoever that is, gives himself at least partial credit for every song (11 of them) on the album except Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty." Miller and Socher team up for 6 of the songs including "Folksinger", "Darling Corey," "Old Fool" (a.k.a. 5/7 Nights Drunk), "Cathedral", "Mountain Dew" and "Skyjacker". Skyjacker and Folksinger are obviously new songs that they must have written. Just as obviously, they did not write Darling Corey, Mountain Dew, and Old Fool. The Wayfarers and Socher take credit for "Twelve Gates"(to the City), "Father O Dear Father" (version of the song where Dad says his daughter can't marry anybody because they are all half-brothers, but Mom finally says choose who you want because you are not related to Dad), "Jordan River" and "Artsa Alinu". Miller, Socher, and the Wayfarers all claim "Kangaroo" which is a different arrangement and new verses to "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport." So I cannot determine if Miller and Socher actually wrote "Cathedral" or, adapted it from something else, or appropriated a pre-existing song. rich r |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cathedral Bells From: raredance Date: 07 Jun 00 - 10:54 PM key to typos: "Ust" = Just I didn't explicitly state that the "Wayfarers" that recorded the album I got the song from were a quartet and not a trio. I listed four names so you probably could have figured that out. Two had gone to Willamette University in Oregon, (one was originally from Charleston, South Carolina), and the other two had attended San Jose State in California. The had at least one other RCA album called "Come Along With The Wayfarers". rich r |

Subject: ADD:Le Carillon de Vendôme(French Cathedral Round) From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Jun 10 - 10:24 PM This is based on the canon (round) that French teachers inflict upon beginning students. From The Rough Guide to the Loire:
More in this message and a recording here at mamalisa.com (click). Oh, and there are recordings by David Crosby and by Crosby and Graham Nash. I really liked this page (click) on the song (with embedded MIDI). The round I know just names the churches (which aren't all cathedrals):
Also see Beaugency and Le Carillon de Vendôme. -Joe- |
