Well MA, Frank Hamilton, famous for the Old Town Folk School in Chicago and as a latter member of the Weaver's is a Catter and lives there.

Michael, don't live there but come over from S.C. right often. Can you clue me in on some really good folk venues in Atlanta? Thanks.

Is THAT what "BS" stands for?! I have such a low-down mind.

Sorry, I wouldn't mind being from Atlanta, but I'm stuck in the midwest right now.

Hi Spaw and Micheal,

Lots going on. Many scenes. Lena's Coffeehouse, second Saturday of every month at the Central Congregational Church on Briarcliff. Check phonebook.

Hungry Ear Coffeehouse, Northwest Unitarian Church on Mount Vernon. Check phonebook.

Red Light Cafe on Amsterdam. (Too smoky for me, though). Phonebook.

Atlanta Area Friends of Folk Music. (AAFM) They have a newsletter and are active with sessions in people's homes. Check search engines for website. Doug Allison.

Fiddler's Green, another singer/songwriter coffeehouse. Floating location for a while.

Moonsongs Coffehoue. Gwinnet Unitarian Church. SHaron Stepler runs it.

There are others. Atlanta is one of the country's best kept secrets. Lots of music here underground. Some great players, songwriters, performers live here but you don't hear of them because they have no support from the local paper, the Atlanta Journal/Constitution which chooses to ignore cultural activities here.

One radio station is plugged in to the Atlanta music community, WRFG (W-Radio-Free-Georgia) 85.9 I think. They are on the air daily unless lightning strikes their transmitter. WABE is the larger FM station but doesn't feature local people much. MOstly synbdicated NPR stuff. It's not like WFMT in Chicago which is really plugged in to the local music scene.

There are some notable musical organizations here such as Rob Sayer's Music Class which does a fantastic job with pre-schoolers teaching music. A one of a kind!

Atlanta has a great balalaika orchestra and mandolin society orchestra. They give periodic concerts.

Atlanta is home to such folks as Pierce Pettis, Elton John.

Blues scene is big here. Blind Willies (too smoky for me) and Fat Matt's Rib Shack.

Elise Witt ( a local fine performer) does concerts and has a newsletter to keep people posted about Atlanta musical activities.

Cowboy Envy performs Western favorites. (Three talented ladies) at local coffehouses.

We just put on an old time country Jamboree at Lena's coffehouse. There's quite a lot happening here but as I say, it's all underground.

Micheal, e-mail me at hamprod @ mindspring.com and I'll send you some e-mail addresses.

Frank
