Well, all you Catters that were so kind and offered words of encouragement during my recent job application and search, here's the updated news. I didn't get the job. What's the old cliche among the showbiz types? Don't quit your day job. What a joke! And all that *stuff* I heard as a youngster about having something to fall back on in case music didn't work out is a rather cruel irony. Good grief, the straight jobs were the ones that didn't work out, music was always my fall-back strategy. I guess I'll just keep on singing and picking until they haul me off stage feet first. Sure wish the money was as good and regular as a straight job, though.

You sound like The Missus MMario. I do have a gig coming up in Kansas City on June 1. For details check out the What's On!! thread. And the probability of doing the local Farmers' Market again this summer.

Lots of people wish it were the other way round, from their day jobs, Jim. I am sorry it didn't work out, but there must be a reason, as yet unknown, like bigger things down the pike.**BG** Really, I do believe it true. Good luck and hang in there.

Kat, Thanks for the kind words. But do you really think it's realistic to hold out for a recording contract from Rounder Records? (with my tongue firmly in my cheek)

Jim,

Unfortunately it usually takes a lot of job applications, interviews, etc etc to get a job. It rarely happens in one fell swoop these days. My attitude now is that each application and interview is good practice. I am refining my skills at convincing people how good a prospect I am to hire.

On the other side of the coin, I do firmly believe that sometimes not getting the job means that it wasn't right for you, in some way. Sometimes, too, it is just that the competition was really tough.

I just got (yet another) rejection letter, but I was very much in two minds about the job because it was working in isolation - I've had a lifetime's worth of that already - and also it would stop me from doing the freelance work I like. So the rejection letter was a relief.

I got a 40 hour per month contract the day after the interview and that job is right up my alley. If I had been offered the other job and accepted it then it would have probably stopped me from doing the one I really wanted.

You never know what is around the corner, but you won't find it unless you keep an open mind and keep doing the hard slog to find it.

Helen

Thank your God that you have the blessings you have. Struggle on, and marvel at the wonder of the day you get the break. Good luck, my friend.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. Just a little dreaming out on the web; if I could pick the ideal job it would be as the fourth member of the New Lost City Ramblers. I've always wanted to play in that sort of group. I guess that would fit me pretty well.

If there were two other folks interested in that, maybe we could get something together. Geography doesn't have to be a limitation.
