=========================================================

I'M SO GLAD TROUBLES DON'T LAST ALWAYS
Traditional Negro Spiritual

REFRAIN:
I'm so glad
Troubles don't last always
I'm so glad
Troubles don't last always
I'm so glad
Troubles don't last always
O my Lord! O my Lord!
What shall I do?

Christ told the blind man
To go to pool and bathe
Christ told the blind man
To go to pool and bathe
Christ told the blind man
To go to pool and bathe
O my Lord! O my Lord!
What shall I do?

Christ told Nicodemus
He must be born again
Christ told Nicodemus
He must be born again
Christ told Nicodemus
He must be born again
O my Lord! O my Lord!
What shall I do?

http://www.negrospirituals.com/news-song/i_m_so_glad_trouble_don_t_last_always.htm also provides the same words to this African American spiritual, except for the word "trouble" instead of "troubles."

Here's how I learned "I'm So Glad" in Union Baptist Temple church, Atlantic City, New Jersey in the 1950s:

I'm so glad.
Trouble don't last always.
I'm so glad.
Trouble don't last always.
I'm so glad.
Trouble don't last always.
Oh, my Lord. Oh, my Lord.
What shall I do?

I'm so glad
my soul's got a resting place.
I'm so glad
my soul's got a resting place.
I'm so glad
my soul's got a resting place.
Trouble don't last always.
I'm so glad.
Trouble don't last always.
I'm so glad.
Trouble don't last always.
Oh, my Lord. Oh, my Lord.
What shall I do?

I'm so glad
I got my 'ligion in time.
I'm so glad
I got my 'ligion in time.
I'm so glad
I got my 'ligion in time.
Oh, my Lord. Oh, my Lord.
What shall I do?

[sing the first verse again].

Lyr. Add: I'M SO GLAD (There's No Dying There)

Refrain:
I'm so glad. I'm so glad,
I'm so glad there's no dying there.
1.
I'll tell you how I found the Lord,
No dying there,
With a hung down head and aching heart,
No dying there.
2.
I hope I'll meet my father there,
No dying there,
That used to join with me in prayer,
No dying there.
3.
I hope I'll meet my brother there,
No dying there,
That used to join with me in prayer,
No dying there,
4.
I hope I'll meet my sister there, etc.
5.
I hope I'll meet my preacher there, etc.

Noble, G. C., 1911, "The Most Popular Plantation Songs," p. 63 with score.

(Gibbs, W. J.), nd (1920s), "Negro Spirituals or The Songs of the Jubilee Singers," no. 32. Verses 1, 3, 5, with score.
Not known if this was included in the volume with songs of the original Jubilee Singers.

Also, there's another song called "{I'm So Glad}, Jesus Lifted Me" :

I'm so glad, Jesus lifted me,
I'm so glad, Jesus lifted me,
I'm so glad, Jesus lifted me,
singing glory, hallelujah,
Jesus lifted me.

When I was in trouble, Jesus lifted me,
when I was in trouble, Jesus lifted me,
when I was in trouble, Jesus lifted me,
singing glory, hallelujah,
Jesus lifted me.

-snip-

I'm sure there's more to this song, but I can't remember any more. Another verse that I've seen online but I don't remember singing is

Satan had me bound, Jesus lifted me,
Satan had me bound, Jesus lifted me,
Satan had me bound, Jesus lifted me,
singing glory, hallelujah,
Jesus lifted me.

All three of these "I'm So Glad" songs are probably related {"I'm so Glad I Got My 'ligion In Time"; "I'm So Glad Trouble Don't Last Always", and I'm So Glad Jesus Lifted Me" .

However the tune for "Jesus Lifted Me" is somewhat different than the other two spirituals. All are uptempo though.

I found several {in my opinion, truly awful} midis of this song. I can hear the tune I know but one one site it's too slow and at least one note is wrong near the end {on "singing glory hallelujah",the piano note went up, but it seems to me that the note should have gone down.} And then on the other site, the midi is much too perky, fake jazzy. Besides these midis don't have any SOUL.
But I guess something is better than nothing so here are those links:

http://www.hymnsite.com/fws/hymn.cgi?2151 [this is the one I think is too slow.

And here's the one I think is too perky-fake jazzy:
http://www.jaydroz.com/indexjesuslifted.htm

That website has notes to that rendition included,but...well...
nevermind.

**

I also found this website with notes to that song:

http://www.gospelmusic.org.uk/h-m/im_so_glad_jesus_lifted_me.htm

Since I can't read music, I don't know if this tune is the one I'm familiar with or not.

**

Btw, the Skip James' blue's song "I'm So Glad" has a completely different tune and words to the "I'm So Glad" spirituals.

I only know about that Blue's song because I found it here on YouTube when I was looking there-unsuccessfully it turns out-for these spirituals.

Also, there were some YouTube videos of White congregations singing "Jesus Lifted Me". This isn't the same song as the African American spiritual/

Also, "Love Lifted Me" is a hymn which is still sung in some Black Baptist churches I'm familiar with. Here's information that I found online about that song:
Love Lifted Me
Words by James Rowe
Music by Howard E. Smith
1912
Ephesians 2

Imo, that midi is even worse than the other ones. I really have to pass on posting it.

This is not the same song or tune as "Jesus Lifted Me". Which came first? Given the 1912 date of "Love Lifted Me", I'd say the spirituals...

Regarding awful MIDIs-- sometimes even an awful midi can be quite useful if you have software that allows you to edit midi, or strip out excess parts that clutter up the simple melody line.

THANKS BTW for beefing up this old thread. When Q and I first posted so many of the spirituals, and gave each one its own thread, this is exactly the kind of development we hoped to see-- examples, parallel songs, different songs of same titles. We thought we'd see it sooner, but that was silly-- this is GREAT!
