I don't think "Irish Eyes" is in the database. I had to look around quite a bit to find it, and I finally discovered you can get it at Jen's Lyric Underground in New Zealand. You have to request it, and then I think it comes back to you by e-mail.
By the way, the featured song at Jen's this week is "Old Man Atom," with lyrics kindly donated by Oldtimer, who says it was recorded by the Sons of the Pioneers. I thought that song was moderately radical, the kind of song that would get you blacklisted in the 50's. the only recording of the song that I've heard was by Sam Hinton, who DID get blacklisted.
Hmmm. Seems like I've heard that name "Oldtimer" somewhere before....

Here is a link to the lyrics and MIDI. Who could ask for more?
I found the lyrics at this site and another. both say "like a morning spring," and my songbook says "like a morn in spring," which makes more sense.
Although it ain't what I'd call folk, here are the lyrics:
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
Music by Ernest R. Ball
Words by Chauncey Olcott & George Graff, Jr.
(copyright claimed in 1994 by Hal Leonard - yeah, sure...)

When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it's like a morn in spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.

Here's the whole thing - took me forever to find it, so it's great to share. Interestingly, Chauncy Olcott also did lyric and music for "My Wild Irish Rose" and collaborated on "Mother Machree", all about the same time.--Tiger

From the sheet music at Mississippi State University:

WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING
Words by Chauncy Olcott and Geo. Graff, Jr.; music by Ernest R. Ball.
Copyright 1912, M. Witmark & Sons, New York

1. There's a tear in your eye,
And I'm wondering why,
For it never should be there at all.
With such pow'r in your smile,
Sure a stone you'd beguile,
So there's never a teardrop should fall.
When your sweet lilting laughter's
Like some fairy song,
And your eyes twinkle bright as can be;
You should laugh all the while
And all other times smile,
And now, smile a smile for me.

CHORUS: When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, it's like a morn in Spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.

2. For your smile is a part
Of the love in your heart,
And it makes even sunshine more bright.
Like the linnet's sweet song,
Crooning all the day long,
Comes your laughter so tender and light.
For the springtime of life
Is the sweetest of all,
There is ne'er a real care or regret;
And while springtime is ours,
Throughout all of youth's hours,
Let us smile each chance we get. CHORUS

Seems like every time I see a request for a song and start grumbling about it not being a folk song, somebody like Tiger comes and posts lyrics like this that nobody could ever find, anywhere. Now that we have the song in complete form, I think it should be included in the database. Hey, Dick, how 'bout it?

Twice yearly, we add 300 or more lyrics to the DT. The Mudcat Forum is one of our prime sources, though far from the only one. If a posted song doesn't make it in any particular edition, its likely because a) we're trying to keep each update fairly balanced, with respect to type of song, or b) because we don't have the tune. The DT started out as words only; when we started including melodies, we attempted to have tounes for at least half the new songs, and preferable at least two-thirds of them, so that the overall proportion of sings with tunes would steadily increase. As of October, we have 6800 lyrics and tunes for 3800 of them. Re. Irish Eyes, I happen to know the tune, and it will probably wind up in our Spring 98 edition. Jest so's you know.

Well, I found the tune in a Dover songbook, Dick. I gotta say something for Dover - they've saved a lot of wonderful old music with their reprints. Here's the tune. Yeah, I know the ABC is weird. Alan's working on it.
