Looking for lyrics to Jimmie Rodgers' "The Gambling Barroom Blues." It's sung to the St. James Infirmary melody.

Appreciate anyone's help and time in advance.

Regards,

Patrick

Didn't find your song, Patrick, but when I looked at Cowpie, I found this gem. Of course, it was posted there by our own Gene Graham. Somebody will come up with your song soon, Patrick, but I couldn't resist providing a link to the other song.

I've had a look around for this - searched Digitrad and forum, used Google. I'm sure that I recently got words for a Jimmie Rodgers song from a GREAT site, but I can't find it any more.

Anyone have the lyrics for Gambling Barroom Blues? I believe that it was recorded by (amongst others) the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

I'd be very grateful if anyone can point me in the correct direction.

Cheers

Steven

I searched Google for Alex Harvey and came up with this - don't know how much the SAHBs may have messed about with it though... can anyone help?

Cheers

Steven

GAMBLIN' BAR ROOM BLUES
As recorded by Alex Harvey on “The Last of the Teenage Idols” (2016) and “Shout: The Essential Alex Harvey” (2018)

CHORUS: Ho! He! Ho! He! You're just as drunk as me.
Ho! He! Ho! He! Head for the deep blue sea.

I went down to the corner, just for to meet my pal.
I found him talkin’ on the sidewalk, talkin’ to my gal
I went back to the barroom, to get another drink of gin.
‘Bout the first thing I knew I was reeling, rocking drunk again. CHORUS

I kept on drinkin’ liquor, to way out in the night
My pal came into the barroom; we had an awful fight
I reached down for my razor and then we messed aroun’.
But when I drew my pistol, I quickly smoked him down. CHORUS

So I headed on back to the barroom, stoppin’ in at the bar,
And there I met a policeman, sittin’ in a motorcar.
We kept drinkin’ lots o’ liquor, that flat-footed cop, and I.
I thought he would never leave me; I knew that he had to die.
And I laid my head on the barroom floor; never get drunk anymore.
I pawned my watch, my golden chain; I pawned my baby's diamond ring. CHORUS 2X

These are the lyrics I've taken from the original Jimmie Rodgers recording. It's on the "Jimmie Rodgers" CD number PLS CD 326, one of the "Famous Country Music Makers" series issued by Castle Music Ltd 29 Barwell Business Park, Leatherhead Road, Chessington, Surrey KT9 2NY. I still see it in the shops occasionally, price £2.99!

Cheers.

GAMBLING BARROOM BLUES
(Shelly Lee Alley & Jimmie Rodgers)
As recorded by Jimmie Rodgers, 1932. (Victor 23766)

Ho, ho, hey, hey,
The gambling bar room blues.

I went down to the corner, just to meet my gal,
I found her standing on the sidewalk, talking to my pal.
I strolled back to the barroom to get another drink of gin
But the first thing I knew I was reeling, rocking and drunk again.

I kept drinking gin an' liquor 'til way up in the night.
When my pal walked into the bar-room, we had an awful fight.
I reached down for my razor and then we knocked around,
But when I pulled my pistol, I quickly smoked him down.

Hey, hee, hey, ho,
Ho, hoo, hoo
Hoo-oo-oo-oo, hoo, ho
Ho, hey, ho.

I went down to see my baby and met her on the way.
I told her I'd have to leave her; I told her I could not stay.
I started down to the station and stopped in at the bar.
There I met a policeman, riding in a motor car.

We both drink lots of liquor, that flat-footed cop and I.
I thought he would never leave me; Lord, I thought I'd die
My baby came in to join us, and then it began to rain.
Then I had to hurry, hurry, to catch that midnight train.

I laid my head in the bar room door; I'll never get drunk any more.
I pawned my watch and my golden chain; I pawned my baby's diamond ring.
Police, police, police, you're just as drunk as me.
I'll grab that old eight-wheeler, and make for the deep blue sea.

OK guest, you beat me to it! But thanks for the link to all the Jimmie Rodgers lyrics.

Incidentally, I see the original request was in May 1998, so we may both be a bit late!

I'll try and get some work done now.

Cheers.

Chris
