Subject: Talitha MacKenzie Rules!!!! From: Michael Carr Date: 13 Jan 97 - 07:58 PM Talitha's new CD, Spiorad, is one of the best CD's I've bought in the past year. Much more polished than any of her previous outings, solo or duo. She still blends in atypical rhythms and sounds (reggae, two-step; didjeridu, big ballsy brass sections; crackling fires, rocking chairs). In the past I have enjoyed her recordings, but have found them to be compromises somehow; a muddy mixture of disparate elements rather than a creation of something new. She seems to have achieved a real synthesis here; an alchemy if you will. This is world music at its best. Standout tracks: Changerais tu? Fionnughuala The Sawing Song (can't remember the gaelic) Lovely translations; exxcellent liner notes. And....the lyrics to Fionnaghuala!!!!!!! |

Sorry I wasn't able to help much there. BTW, have you been able to locate anything regarding recordings by Talitha Nelson (pre-MacKenzie)? Thanks! - Ian |

Subject: RE: Talitha MacKenzie Rules!!!! From: Michael Carr Date: 16 Jan 97 - 07:31 PM I have not yet seen any thing by her under that name. I have kept my eyes peeled, as they say. We have a pretty neat record store here called Plan 9 Records and they have a fairly complete Folk/International section. I'll see what I can sniff out! |
Subject: RE: Talitha MacKenzie Rules!!!! From: Date: 16 Jan 97 - 07:45 PM Hey, Ian I read in your response to laura below (vis a vis Dulaman) that you have a recording out. If you don't mind, e-mail me the name of your band (if it is a band). When did it come out etc. I'd be interested in giving it a listen. My address is mbc9r@virginia.edu Thanks! Michael |
Subject: RE: Talitha MacKenzie Rules!!!! From: Barry Date: 12 Feb 97 - 11:09 PM Talitha MacKenzie, formley was Talitha Claypool Nelson from Boston, she sang for a while with a local group St. James Gate & recorded at least 1 with them while doing Irish music, I think she's also on a recording from Mystic Seaport Museum when she was doing sea shanties. I'm going back at least mid 80's. |
Subject: RE: Talitha MacKenzie Rules!!!! From: Ian Date: 13 Feb 97 - 11:43 PM Barry, Thanks for picking up the thread - and for the info! The recording I heard was mostly sea shanties and certainly could have been from the 80's. Any idea where to locate a copy? (or of the St. James Gate stuff - didn't know about that!) Whatever help you can provide would be appreciated! Thanks! - Ian |
Subject: RE: Talitha MacKenzie Rules!!!! From: Barry Date: 14 Feb 97 - 02:03 PM Hi Ian She was singing back up on an LP 'Sea Songs' sea festival series #2 in 1980 by the Sea Hertage Foundation, I also remeber doing Shanties on something else but can't remeber what. She's also on an LP called 'St. James Gate' put out by Kells Records in 1985, 35 Rodman St. Jamaica Plain, Mass. 02130, Tel # 617-524-2856 , I don't know if there still around, I called the # but got no answer. Good luck |
