Stage Lighting

Anyone know of a good alternative to par cans for lighting the stage. Our current light stand / bar and for par cans is getting battered and we are looking for a change. There must be a smaller, more compact system on the market! Any ideas?

I was at one place the other night (Ginger's Tavern in Halifax NS), and instead of the usual Paint-can type stage lighting that is common, they had a more standard track lighting using a small can type. The only drawback with these is that you can't use gels to modify the colours. The main advantage is that they are smaller and you can use the smaller type par-type halogen lamps.

I have seen that those little halogen lamps have some clip on thingies that allow insertion of a piece of gel - wouldn't try dark shades though - also you can get a fitting that is a small 'barndoor' fitting - think it was only 2 doors, not 4. Not really useful for long throws though, I suppose.

Many years ago I built some paraflood into tin cans... could put gels on the font. Today I might use halogens and use smaller cans. You need to ensure that they are wired correctly and safely.

It depends what you want it to do, Parcans are cheap and pretty robust (they don't have much to damage). Take a look at some websites, Google 'stage lighting' or start with http://www.aclighting.co.uk/ they have loads (with pictures)

The latest (but rather expensive) technology uses LEDs - with the major advantage that gels are no longer needed. Colour is controlled by specialised DMX controllers.
