Subject: Origins: Old World Pronounciation: 'Keinton' ?? From: GUEST Date: 09 Aug 06 - 08:06 PM From "Clean Contrary Way", a verse says At Keinton, Brainford, Plymouth, York, and divers Places more, What Victories we Saints obtain, the like nere seen before. How often we Prince Rupert kill'd, and bravely wonne the day, The wicked Cavaliers did run the clean contrary way. How do you pronounce "Keinton" ? AY or ee? Also I guess "Brainford" is like 'brain' in your head? |

Subject: RE: Origins: Old World Pronounciation: 'Keinton' ?? From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 10 Aug 06 - 12:54 AM The Battle of Edgehill was the first pitched battle of the Civil War, the nearby village is KINETON, Warwickshire ~ (as in MINE). See Edgehill Fight ~ http://www.kipling.org.uk/poems_edgehill.htm or Wikipedia ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Edgehill Rosie |
Subject: RE: Origins: Old World Pronounciation: 'Keinton' ? From: Paul Burke Date: 10 Aug 06 - 03:41 AM Not five miles away from here, there's a hamlet called Gotham. How do you pronounce it? Like Goth-am Batman? Goat-am? Go- tham? Got-am? I've asked people from close by, and even they come up with different answers. But I think Selchie's suggestion is best. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Old World Pronounciation: 'Keinton' ?? From: Micca Date: 10 Aug 06 - 08:58 AM last time I was in the area the road sign outside the village said Kineton and it was prounounced as Selchie has it. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Old World Pronounciation: 'Keinton' ?? From: Snuffy Date: 10 Aug 06 - 09:08 AM It probably is Kineton, but there is a Keinton Mandeville in Somerset. No idea how they pronounce it, and it seems to have no Civil War connection. And where's Brainford? Google maps can't find it in UK. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Old World Pronounciation: 'Keinton' ?? From: Snuffy Date: 10 Aug 06 - 10:06 AM Answered my own question - "Brainford" is nowadays called Brentford And according to this legend (page 29 &f) Kineton was spelled as Keinton in former times. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Old World Pronounciation: 'Keinton' ?? From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 10 Aug 06 - 10:52 AM It is Kineton, Warks, I work there, but I'm afraid I don't know the old world pronuncation for it. However Wikipedia suggests Kington originally ~ The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Kington. Rosie |
