Subject: Boston 60's folkie: Jackie Washington From: GUEST,Bonnie in Seattle (at work) Date: 10 Jan 07 - 10:33 PM I just came across a black 1960s Boston folksinger named Jackie Washington ("not" the Jackie Washington of Canada.) I read he was on the Vanguard label in the early 60's. Did anyone at Mudcat ever see or hear him perform? What were his voice and guitar styles like? Also, was he blues/folk or more traditional folk? What are your memories of him? |
Subject: RE: Boston 60's folkie: Jackie Washington From: Bill D Date: 10 Jan 07 - 10:45 PM I have the record he first appeared on... "New Folk" ...with David Gude, The Greenbriar Boys and Hedy West. As I remember (without playing it) he was a very nice singer with not a very different voice...rather a soft voice,....he sang some trsditional and some topical stuff....see this page |
Subject: RE: Boston 60's folkie: Jackie Washington From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 10 Jan 07 - 10:45 PM He was also known as Jackie Landrum. He was Puerto Rican and very proud of his heritage. His most famous song was "Que Bonito Bandero" and was about the flag of Puerto Rico. I heard him perform many years ago at the Nassau Community College Folk Festival and at Oscar Brand's yearly show at Cooper Union College. He was considered folk and played a good guitar. He played with a Latin beat to his tunes and had a pleasant voice. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Boston 60's folkie: Jackie Washington From: Suffet Date: 11 Jan 07 - 12:04 AM Greetings: While he used Jackie Washington in the 1960s, he now uses Jack Landron (pronounced lan-DRONE) for both his acting and his singing careers. Regardless of what you call him, he will be appearing at the Peoples' Voice Cafe in New York City on April 28 of this year. --- Steve |
