Bookings for the temporary campsite are now being taken during Whitby Folk Week. The site is at the Whitby Community College and is being run by Moor & Coast.

Rates are Campers/Caravans             Pitch fee   £10 per night
          Tents                        Pitch fee   £8 per night

plus      Camping fee £2 per night per person

Dogs allowed on site under supervision @ £1 pdpn

Minimum booking of 3 nights.

Cos £14 per night for 3 nights minimum i.e. £42 seems a bit steep unless you have showers etc. As my mother used to sy any dicsount for pensioners?

Facilities include hot showers, indoor toilets and wash room, elsan point, water, 24 hour stewarding and a flat short grassed playing field on the largest site closest to the town centre. There are no other campsites within a mile of the town centre that will take tents.

Most of the fee will go to College funds, the rest goes to the Moor & Coast Festival as a fund raiser... Both are "not for profit" organisations...

If you are going for the full week or part of then camping with a season ticket could be the better option. That is if you are camping on your own if you are sharing a pitch then you would be halving or more the cost of the pitch. The freedom a season ticket gives you is worth it, and there's always going to be some dances concerts or stuff like that you are likely to feel like dropping in on.

I agree that a season ticket with camping is good value if you are here to enjoy the whole of the organised festival...

A season ticket for Whitby Folk Week, with camping, now costs £136 for each adult for the full week... two people £272... three £408 and so on...

A pitch on the Temporary Campsite for a caravan or camper costs £80 for the week (tent £64)plus a camping fee of £16 per person for the week.... that is 8 nights camping.... Friday 18th Aug to Saturday 26th Aug... Cost for one £96... (tent £80) Cost for two sharing £112...(tent £96)

The temporary campsite is intended for the fringe festival and to help alleviate the accute shortage of pitches available for tents in Whitby...

What the M&C makes sense it's up to you to decide just what is best for you.
The Money as stated is to go to supporting the Moor and Coast Festival should you camp and the Whitby College. Should you go down the Whitby Folk Week Season ticket rout then it will go to support the Whitby Folk Week and in the past another local school (probably true again this year).

Three things are certain one you will have a great time in Whitby secondly all rooms; B&B, cottages, flats and commercial campsites will be full already. Most people book them this year for next. And finally any one running any of the above is going to have to put up with a certain amount of complaining and winging. No matter how much time effort they put in.

From the bridge, follow the west-side harbour wall upriver to Scoresby monument (Tap&Spile opposite), strike inland passing the foot of Pannet Park to small roundabout, where there are direction signs.

Total for bridge to college is a bit over 0.5 miles (I would estimate) allow 15 mins if going uphill and not too unfit. A bit more if the pavements are busy.

Camping facilities at the college are as good if not better than most camp sights I have been on, and it is a subject that is close to my armpits at the minute having just spent four days at Chester Folk Festival with a major lack of washing facilities. Joking apart if you are just doing the fringe festival it is perfect, no taxi fares etc and just eneogh time to eat a bag on the way back.

There are very few pitches available for tents within a mile of Whitby Town centre. This temporary campsite is aimed at providing campers, with tents, the oppotunity to pitch in town during the Whitby Folk Festival...

To date most bookings have been for caravans and campervans...

Agreed .. it is unpleasant to step in dog dirt but it is also unpleasant to step in vomit which is often (in fact - regularly) left behind by drunken campers.

I think the point is that it's cheaper per night on the Moor and Coast Whitby Week Temporary Campsite, per night, per tent, per Folkie than it would be to put your Cat in a Cattery per night (reportedly £15 per Cat per Night. I have not got a clue how much more it costs to put a dog in Kennels.)

I don't know if the cheaper price is because those Cats and Dogs would help to keep the Seagull Shiite of the tents or not. As for dogs they are fine if the owner is a responsible dog owner. Dogs are not allowed on the beach on the west side they are allowed on the beaches to the East of Whitby including Robin Hoods Bay and to the East of Sandsend up to the Whitby Beach.

I quite like the smoking analogy but surely, to be accurate...

...a dog owner who lets their dog run loose to come & disturb you and doesn't clean up their poo is like a smoker blowing smoke in your face or smoking close by in an enclosed space, and leaving their ash & tab ends littering the place afterwards. Both of which can cause annoyance and potentially health problems.

... a dog owener who keeps their dog on a leash and cleans up after them is like a smoker who only smokes out of doors and downwind and who clears up their tab ends... neither of which offends in the least, surely?

And in both cases my experience has been that your first type of dog owner is in the majority. Again I stress, if those people were there without their dogs there would be no problem, but how can you tell one type of owner from another?

And what about the vast majority who fall between both of your definitions? In the smoker analogy, everybody shares the smoke to a greater or lesser extent, depending on whether the smoker is considerate or not. Same with dogs. My problem is that most dog owners are so besotted with their animals that they overlook the fact that others are not so. For me it's not so much being "disturbed" in the sense of the dog being a bit annoying - it's deeper than that. I'm part of a silent very large number who are positively uncomfortable with any animals (unfortunately allergic to cats for example) and to be told "he won't bite" when confronted - as if the dog was doing me a favour by not biting me (!) - is no consolation at all.

Which brings a thought to mind - how often do we hear that said? The fact that dog owners are forever saying "he won't bite" must be an indication that a dog biting you is a distinct possibility in the normal course of events, but that this particular one won't actually bite you on this occasion - just a thought, with tongue only partially in cheek.

No surprise then that I won't be at the festival campsite - I've found a delightful little site only a short bike ride away. NOw don't start me on the dogs versus cyclists issue ...........

I thought this thread was about camping at Whitby, not dogs although I must admit admit that we go to quite a few small 5 van sites and the ones that are top of the list have coarse fishing on site, a singers folk club near and no kids and no dogs - heaven!

The official wording from the booking information states:

"Dogs are allowed on site but must be on a leash at all times, under control and cleaned up after. They must not be left unattended at any time during the day or night."

Will this stop the talk of dogs now...
