Subject: Whose music will you miss??
From: Wesley S
Date: 29 Aug 00 - 05:47 PM

In the Stevie Ray Vaughn thread we were talking about the fact that we'll miss his music and we will always wonder what types of things he would have been doing if he were still alive.

So the question is whose music will you miss? I for one will wonder about Fred Neil. As far as I know he's not dead - he's just dropped out of music. But I wonder what types of songs he would be doing now, and would I still be listening? So who do you wish had the chance to put out one more recording??

What would her music be like now if she'd been able to take care of herself?

Hendrix. Coltrane. Stan Rogers, without a doubt. John Lennon. Buddy Holly. Del Shannon. Hoyt Axton. Steve Goodman. Pre-induction Elvis (after the army he just was never the same). Gram Parsons. Cactus Jack (the band I had through the 70's - we were just getting good at writing our own stuff when it all went ker-flooey).

I have to second the Gram Parsons motion. Janis, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones...no, wait, they just LOOK deceased. John Lennon, Buddy Holly, Jim Morrison: The Doors were a work in progress. Bill Monroe. Bob Wills. All stuff I've loved and wondered about.

I must say Robert Johnson. I wonder what he'd be like had he not died so early and he had more time to progess as a musician.

Bruce Jay Pascow of the Washington Squares. He was a good friend of mine and my musical mentor. I wonder how I'd be turning out right now if he were still around.

Merle Travis. There's lots of Travis sound-alikes, but he had the original patent. So jazzy and country ... such a beautiful, mellow, thumbpicking sound.

I've often thought it would've been neat to see what Jimi would have become had he lived. I think he was as creative and innovative as anyone I've heard. I also think he was just hitting his stride.

But then I look at what has become of so many people and bands who had moments of brilliance and turned into complete crap. Rod Stewart, Elton John, Chicago, Elvis to name a few.

Who knows, if he'd have lived he may have become a Vegas act. (Half tongue in cheek)

Kate Wolf, Janis, Hendrix, the Allmans, Townes, Bessie Smith, Buddy Holly, Elizabeth Cotten, the Red Clay Ramblers as we knew them, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Jim Morrison, and a guy named Bob White who probably isn't dead but apparently doesn't perform any more (my parents last saw him at the Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan, 20+ years ago).

I WILL miss Norman Blake, Fats Domino, Jean Ritchie, Etta Baker (is she still around?), Paul Geramia, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton.

Fred Neil is in California hangin'. A friend of mine who used to own the Night Owl Cafe in NY is very good friends with him and they communicate regularly. He's ok, but is out of music right now. I can find out more if anyone is really interested. I won't bother him though. He obviously wants to left alone. I'll just ask my friend about him.

Love, annamill

Annamill - I wouldn't want to intrude on Fred Neils personal life but it just seems a shame that such a talented guy with such a great voice { to my ears at least } had to get fed up the the music biz. I wish he would drop into a studio one or twice a decade so those of us who love his music could hear that 12 string and subsonic voice of his. It sure would be nice to tell him that there is at least one guy out there { and probably a lot more } that really loves his music.

I already miss lots of those nominated above, plus the following who I remember fondly, who have passed on or into oblivion:

Alex Campbell, Alex Atterson, Paul McNeil, Redd Sullivan, Michael and Claire Milner, Bob Roberts, Stephane Grapelli, Peter Parkhill ....

Thanks to the minor miracle of sound recording, their voices or playing are with me yet. What I really miss is them!

Of my all-time heroes, I'd hate to think that I would never see Tom Paxton again.

The gone -- wonder what they could have done had they lived:

Buddy Holly

The not-yet-gone but will miss when they go:

Gordon Bok (and Muir and Trickett)
Al Stewart (who will have a new album out soon on Miramar)
Paul Simon

I also concur with whoever it was said that the earlier Bruce Cockburn stuff (before, say, 1983) was the best. Although his acoustic/folky stuff in the last 5 years has been very good. "Pacing the Cage" could not be written by a young man.

Honestly have to say the one I miss most is my mother's sweet voice, singing the mountain ballads that were handed down from generation to generation. And I too unaware at the time to at least get them on tape. Should they pass on before I do, I'd miss Jean Ritchie, Maddy Prior, June Tabor, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and so many others. At least we have recordings of these.

Man there are some greats on this thread. Kendall, I'm glad you had the guts to say the ones you did. Kinda fely funny to try to say it.

The gones? Probably at the top of my list because of where they were headed when they died too young---Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Buddy Holly. Also Frank Proffitt, Merle Watson, Gram Parsons, Hoyt axton, Steve Goodman......

I'd miss everyone Kendall named, and also Jean Ritchie, Emmylou, John Prine,........hell, even Kendall. (stick around bro)

He has gone on to different things in the trad field, but I miss the Patrick Sky of the 60's. An excellent folksinger (trad), but a superior songwriter and interpreter. Great stuff.

For me the list of dead-or-gone-and-wish-they-weren't starts with Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Steve Goodman, Woody Guthrie, Dave Cousins/the Strawbs, the Dead, Terry Reid . . . and certainly includes my grandmother, Sara. I can still see us on her porch, me in her lap and maybe two years old, and her singing me this tune. Not long after, I'd learned some of it, and she made me sing it for her friends one night after dinner. I remember that scene, too. I really didn't want to do it; I was so afraid. Now I cherish the memory and only wish I had the whole sequence on film . . . so I could remember what that tune was and hear her sing it once again.
