Subject: RE: Chord Req: I was never born to follow by T.M,T.C.H From: PoppaGator Date: 21 Jan 08 - 06:02 PM I don't know that group, but the Byrds recorded a song called "Wasn't Born to Follow." I had assumed that it had been written by a band member, more than likely McGuinn, but just now learned that Carole King Co-wrote it and recorded it herself: WASN'T BORN TO FOLLOW by Gerry Goffin / Carole King No I'd rather go and journey where the diamond crescents flowing And run across the valley Beneath the sacred mountain And wander through the forest Where the trees have leaves of prisms That make the light up into colors That no one know the names of And when it's time I'll go and lay Beside the legendary fountain Till I see her form reflected In its clear and gentle waters And if you think I'm ready You may lead me to the chasm Where the rivers of our visions Flow into one another And I'll stay awhile and wonder At the mist that they created And lose myself within it Cleanse my mind and body And I know at that moment As I stand at cathedral I will want to dive Beneath the white cascading water She may beg and she may plead And she may argue with her logic Mention all the things I'll lose That really have no value Tho' I doubt that she will ever Come to understand my meaning In the end she'll surely know I was not born to follow |
Subject: Lyr Add: WASN'T BORN TO FOLLOW (Goffin/King) From: Peace Date: 21 Jan 08 - 06:33 PM Take a road of the city Ride across the desert Into the misty mountains Through the purple valley She took me to the water - The clear crystal fountain Where we laid beneath the trees and the flowers No-one knows the names of They will beg, they will argue Trick you with their logic Get inside your pretty head Take you much for granted But soon the time will come And they'll have to understand That I was never born to follow |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: I was never born to follow by T.M,T.C.H From: PoppaGator Date: 21 Jan 08 - 06:52 PM Peace ~ the lyrics you gave us are very similar to what I had just found, and seem to fit the same scansion and thus probably the same melody as the Byrds song I remember ~ perhaps from the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album, perhaps another LP. Are they as sung by TMTCH? Or as sung by the Byrds? (I don't claim to remember the lyrics the Byrds used; I never memorized them to sing the song myself. Indeed, I don't even remember for sure which "edition" or personnel lineup of the Byrds it was who did this.) Maybe it is TMTHC, because the final line uses the phrase supplied by the OP "I was never born to follow" rather than "wasn't." I never would have guessed that this was a Goffin/King song, and still have my doubts. So many internet lyrics sites erroneiously credit songs to performers, not to writers. I was persuaded to believe this one only because they included Gerry Goffin's name along with (performer) Carole King's. |
Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: WASN'T BORN TO FOLLOW (Goffin/King From: Peace Date: 21 Jan 08 - 07:16 PM I hear you, PG. Tell you the truth, I do not know. BUT, thanks to your post I found the following: WASN'T BORN TO FOLLOW . . . Carole King & Gerry Goffin Capo V Intro: (G)(C)(G)(C)(G)(C)(G)(C) Oh I'd (G)rather go and (C)journey Where the (G)diamond crescent's (C)glowing And (G)run across the (C)valley Be(G)neath the sacred (C)mountain And (D)wander thru the forest Where the (C)trees have leaves of prisms And break the light in colors That (D)no one knows the (G)names of (C)(G)(C) And (G)when it's time I'll (C)go and wait Be(G)side a legen(C)dary fountain (G)Till I see your (C)form reflected (G)In its clear and (C)jeweled water (D)If you think I'm ready You may (C)lead me to the chasm Where the rivers of our vision Flow (D)into one an(G)other (C)(G)(C) (G)I will want to (C)dive beneath The (G)white cascading (C)waters She may (G)beg, she may (C)plead She may (G)argue with her (C)logic And (D)mention all the things I'll lose That (C)really have no value In the end she will surely know I (D)wasn't born to (G)follow that is from a Google of Tracy Grammer Chords & Lyrics |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: I was never born to follow by T.M,T.C.H From: Peace Date: 21 Jan 08 - 07:26 PM The version I posted (unattributed) is from a German site that has more pop-ups than a horse has hairs. They didn't attribute it there, either, other than to say it's the version (lyrics) used by TMTCH. So, that said, I'd think that the attribution as to authors that you found (and also backed up by Tracy Grammer's site) is probably correct. Looks like a co-written piece in which they share credit for both lyrics and music. |
