The monthly Brighton Acoustic Session features Terry Masterson on March 3rd.
It's at The Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Street (100 yards from Brighton
Station.)Admission free.

Terry has finally been persuaded to digitise some of his wonderful sessions recorded over the years by Jim Marshall & Vic Smith for their local BBC Radio folk programme and his CD will be unleashed that night. His spellbinding interpretations of, among much else, the songs of Irish travellers, have made him a legend on the Sussex folk music scene for over 30 years.

It was Terry who introduced me when I sang my first song as a floor singer - 1965, and the song was "Solidarity Forever". Good on yer, Terry, and I'm looking forward to being one of the first to get the CD. Details, please, and thanks, Zimmerman, for publicizing the event (though I can't make it, being in Princeton BC!) and the CD.

When I was a student in Brighton (late 60's) the Lewes Arms, and Terry Masterson, were an essential feature of Saturday evenings. Best of luck with the CD, and I'll get my spies on the Brighton scene to keep me up to date on progress!

I dropped an e-mail to an old friend about this event, and I'd like to quote from his reply to me, I'm sure he won't mind.

"Terry started as a very nervous floor-singer in 1958 at Eel Pie Island - where the residents were Robin Hall and American Sandy Paton - He was then a full-time Art Student and later had a few One Man exhibitions of his paintings. In about 1963 he became resident at Bunjees in the West End and then at The Crown in Twickenham later in the 60's he became resident singer in Brighton and Lewes. He used to sing a mixture of English/Irish and West Indian Songs - he was a real nice unassuming guy - good to know that he's still active."

Interesting to see Sandy Paton get a mention there, I was around at the time, but don't remember running into Sandy.

As I said hope it's a great night, and I still want a copy of his CD.

Ah! How the past comes back to haunt us! Great to know Terry is still around - and that he's got a CD coming out. How do we get it from Devon? I wonder if he remembers North Cornwall and when Mervyn always refered to him as Terry Mastitis? Please give him my regards.

Yes, mine too (Hi Tom!) - I have such happy memories of the Brighton club, and Terry was always so friendly and supportive. Please someone, pass on my best wishes to him from Ireland. Packie (who is fine, just turned 91 a few days ago) doesn't do the internet, but I know he'd join me in that.
