Spare Parts (Bryan Creer, Suzanne Higgins and Valmai Goodyear) will running part-playing sessions for all concertina systems and an English tunes practice sessions for any instrument at the at the Wadebridge Folk Festival from 22nd- 25th. August 2008.

We will be running part-playing sessions for all concertina systems on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th at 12:30 in the Town Hall and an English tunes practice sessions for any instrument at 12:00 on Monday 25th August, also in the Town Hall. This practice is a chance to learn some solid session tunes from the dots and by ear, playing slowly with lots of repetition, and to get used to playing with others. You can drop in and out - you don't need to come for the entire session.

The music we'll be using for the part playing and the practice session can be found on our website http://www.sparepartsband.co.uk/SPTunes.php. It's in .pdf (printable) and midi (audio) form. I can also send you a printed copy if you let me know your postal address and which sessions you will come to.

The sessions are open to people who haven't bought a full season ticket for the festival.

We will also be leading the sessions in the Molesworth Arms on Saturday 23rd. August at 2.30 - 4.30 pm and Sunday 24th. August at 8.00 -10.00 pm Molesworth Arms.

See you there.

Bryan

There seems to be a little confusion in the timetables on the Wadebridge website. In some places the times for the Saturday and Sunday concertina part playing sessions are given as 12:00 mid-day so we'll assume that till further notice.

Bryan is being modest. One of the arrangements for the part-playing sessions is his own autobiographical tune 'Shipwrecked in Milton Keynes'.

Suzanne has set a couple of tunes from the Joshua Jackson MS, 'A French Minuet' and 'The Pleasures of Salisbury' (also in William Winter's MS).

I've had a go at setting 'Lakes of Sligo', having been entranced by the tune as played by Frankie Gavin, Tim Edey, Rick Epping and Brendan Power on the CD 'Jigging the Reels'. I'm fascinated to discover that it's actually the same tune as William Kimber's 'Over The Hills to Glory' (just add dotting, triplets and a couple of Scotch snaps to taste).

We'll do our best. Bryan and I are travelling down tomorrow to acclimatise, test the beer in the Molesworth Arms and so on. I haven't been to that pub since my honeymoon thirty-three years ago - we missed Charlie Bate by a matter of minutes.

Well, we had a splendid time and from the look and sound of it so did a lot of other people. A friendly festival on a human scale.

For me the highlights were Swarb's Lazarus, Ruth Burke & Kate Hazleton, The Claque, Thorn & Roses, and the Wadworth's 6X in the side bar of the Molesworth. Both it and the Doom Bar in the Ship proved equal to the demands made on them by the song A Pot of Porter O. The list is unbalanced as I couldn't get to see a lot of other people I'm sure I would have enjoyed, such as Steve Turner and Blabbermouth.

Looking forward to next year.

Valmai
