Subject: Lyr Add: CLEAR AWAY IN THE MORNING From: SINSULL Date: 09 Apr 09 - 11:07 AM Gordon Bok's Clear Away In The Morning could be used as a rowing song. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLEAR AWAY IN THE MORNING by Gordon Bok Take me back on the bay, boys, Clear away in the morning I don't want to spend my pay boys O bring her round Take me back on the bay, boys I don't want to go ashore, boys Captain, don't you leave me There's no one here that needs me Nancy, o my Nancy She never played it fancy Bring me wine and brandy I'd only ask for Nancy Captain, don't let the main down Captain, don't let the chain run Captain, don't you need me There's nothing I can do, boy Nancy, o my Nancy Nancy, o my Nancy Take me back on the bay, boys I don't want to go ashore boys |

Subject: Lyr Add: SOUTH AUSTRALIA From: SINSULL Date: 09 Apr 09 - 11:10 AM She might get a laugh out of South Australia: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTH AUSTRALIA In South Australia I was born! Heave away! Haul away! South Australia round Cape Horn! We're bound for South Australia! Heave away, you rolling king, Heave away! Haul away! All the way you'll hear me sing We're bound for South Australia! As I walked out one morning fair, It's there I met Miss Nancy Blair. I shook her up, I shook her down, I shook her round and round the town. There ain't but one thing grieves my mind, It's to leave Miss Nancy Blair behind. And as you wallop round Cape Horn, You'll wish to Christ you'd never been born! Up the coast to Vallipo, Northward on to Callao. It's back again to Liverpool, I spent me pay like a bloody fool! I'm Liverpool born and Liverpool bred, Long in the arm and thick in the head. Oh, rock and roll me over boys, Let's get this damn job over boys. |

Subject: RE: does anyone know of a rowing song with t From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 09 Apr 09 - 11:21 AM http://www.rowinghistory.net/Collecting/music.htm The link, above, deals with popular rowing songs from the "golden age" of rowing; i.e., victorian era and turn-of-the-century (20th)time frame. I would imagine that a number of whaling songs probably incorporate rowing as well, since the longboat was an integral part of the hunt in the 18th and 19th centuries. |

Subject: RE: Rowing song with the name Nancy? From: Barry Finn Date: 08 May 09 - 01:40 AM Shucks Paula, those kids are really what a trad music fest in about, I love it that you've got them there again. I'll let Neil know, that may be the excuse I need to get him to attend the fest. Looking forward to seeing & hearing you again, it's been to long. Was it you that used to lead "Yalla Gals"? The only times I've ever been able to hit that really high note in harmony on the chorus was when you guys used to sing it. If it was you would you do it again?? Please, no one did that like you guys. All my best Barry |

Subject: RE: Rowing song with the name Nancy? From: Barbara Date: 09 May 09 - 12:47 AM Years ago I heard Gordon Bok sing a rowing song he'd written, and while it didn't have Nancy in it, it had 'lady' and 'Nancy' could easily be substituted. I don't know if he ever recorded it, but what I can remember goes like this: 5 5 3 4 5 5 4 3 No more talking high you oh 5 5 3 4 5 4 3 2 No more talking hey you oh 5 5 3 4 58 8 7 6 8 No more talking high you oh-o 5 3 1 3 2 2 1 Fare you well, my lady oh No more walking ... No more rowing... I can't please you... Guess I'll leave you... and, I think I still love you... but perhaps that was my addition. Thought it should go in here, anyway. Blessings, Barbara |
