Subject: Biggit a lum From: John of the Hill Date: 11 Oct 99 - 12:57 AM In "The Parish of Dunkeld" what is the meaning of the phrase "they biggit a lum where the bell used to hang"? Thanks, John |
Subject: RE: Biggit a lum From: roopoo Date: 11 Oct 99 - 01:19 AM Built a chimney. Just as in the old Scots phrase "Lang may Your Lum Reek": Long may you chimney smoke. This is a wish that your household may prosper. Also as in the Billy Connolly song about the crematorium: "And when you see the smoke go curling up the lum, it'll be a hot time in the old town tonight!" Cheers John mouldy |
Subject: RE: Biggit a lum From: lamarca Date: 11 Oct 99 - 11:17 AM The lum in this case was to let them build the fire for their still; "A stillpot they got and they brewed Hielan' whiskey"... |
Subject: RE: Biggit a lum From: GUEST,Alex Roan Date: 02 Jan 01 - 06:21 PM I'd love to see the full lyrics. Andy M Stewart set these words to the air "Over the Water to Charlie" Was it ever collected/recorded to other airs? Is the song based on a true story? |

Subject: RE: Biggit a lum From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 03 Jan 01 - 04:54 AM Ah, but which Bonnie Dundee tune? The one sung these days was I seem to recall a piano piece known as The Band At A Distance, and put to the lyric by a Scottish lady singer 120 years ago or so, in preference to the original preferred tune. |
Subject: RE: Biggit a lum From: Smok Date: 03 Jan 01 - 06:53 AM I work at a funeral home and am always looking for a good grave song. What is the title of this Billy Connelly song about cremation and/or what are the lyrics. |
