Subject: Tech: Windows 10 Task Manager not working. From: Bonzo3legs Date: 21 Apr 19 - 06:41 PM I upgraded my PC from Windows 7 to 10 last week, but its Task Manager will not work. Has anyone else had this problem? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Windows 10 Task Manager not working. From: Mr Red Date: 22 Apr 19 - 02:36 AM another good reason not to upgrade. When I buy a new computer, it will be Win10 because that will be all that is on offer. Merely upgrading to avoid any loopholes in security that might no longer be updated is a security gamble. And this kind of annoyance is just a little cluette. It may not be caused by Micro$oft's diligence in testing their OS, per se, it may be the the unknown and unknowable mix of your installed s/w that is far too complex & unique for them to have seen before. Having said that I have seen an update in Office that prevented all macros from working and it was many days after they still hadn't posted a solution that the techie world knew how to. And the solution was to delete a file! And Excel would re-constitute the contents if it was not there, then everything was honky dory, except for an annoying nag screen that says Activex doesn't work, yet does. I live with that. Let us know what solved the problemo. I usually use the three finger salute (Cntrl Alt Del) or run Taskmgr from the start screen - in Win 7 though. Very handy when using a (notso) HotSpot. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Windows 10 Task Manager not working. From: punkfolkrocker Date: 22 Apr 19 - 10:22 AM Right now Win 7 is officially due to be obsolete.. ok.. nothing lives forever... What microsoft don't tell us is that a fresh install of win 8.1 is nearly impossible...!!! I've recently attempted this on two laptops as I'm keen to avoid win 10 for as long as possible. Here's the problem... Win 8.1 ISO installs to hard drive and authorizes with what appears to be no problems, until you try to update win defender security & spyware definitions. The update hangs doing nothing. Then you try to do the system updates, knowing there will be dozens as the fresh new win 8.1 install version is so out of date. Again nothing happens because win 8.1 updater is broken. Hunting microsoft site for manual install patches provides apparent solution, and if lucky you may get one security update for Win Defender. But still windows update won't work... Basically, Windows update needs to be updated but can't be updated by windows update because it's so out of date... ..and none of the manual download & install microsoft patches fix it either...!!! So at this point you are supposed to think, bugger it time to grit teeth and install win 10... Nice one microsoft, you crafty bastards... However, a lucky google search result points to an independant 3rd party solution "WSUS Offline Update" "www.wsusoffline.net - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection" It works.. it's very slow.. and it might hang and need rebooting a couple of times during update.. but it works... Problem solved, a working fresh updated install of Win 8.1 - no thanks to microsoft.. Win 10 can eff off to another day... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Windows 10 Task Manager not working. From: punkfolkrocker Date: 22 Apr 19 - 12:38 PM A briefer summary.. Microsoft are so desperate to 'persuade' everyone to move to Win 10... The downloadable Win 8.1 ISO provided on their site is so out of date it is unusable by most consumers. The update function is broken, leaving a fresh install open to security risks. They provide no realistic help for average domestic PC users. It requires expert knowledge at pro technician level, using 'unofficial' 3rd party system admin tools, to fix the problem microsoft ignores... .. bastards... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Windows 10 Task Manager not working. From: Bonzo3legs Date: 24 Apr 19 - 06:10 AM Just realised that I meant to say Task Scheduler - una pava distinta de pescados!!! Same task as Windows 7, to record BBC radio webstream using ffmpeg, for a specified time. I played around with the settings without success for some time until an error message appeared asking if I wanted Windows 10 to do exactly what I was asking. I clicked Yes and the Task Scheduler settings were changed automatically - then it worked! The settings to shut down the PC worked as for Windows 7. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Windows 10 Task Manager not working. From: Bonzo3legs Date: 24 Apr 19 - 06:26 AM I found the upgrade to Win10 from Win7 to be very easy, the slowest part being download and installation of updates, which is like watching paint dry! Setting up wifi sharing tested my patience but I found the solution on youtube. |

From: Mr Red Date: 24 Apr 19 - 10:19 AM I found the upgrade to Win10 from Win7 to be very easy Maybe you didn't have the same mix of natty little Apps that could doovery your floggle-toggle with one click. I bet you would be surprised if you did an audit, that you had forgotten you looked at and rejected. Free stuff leaves all sorts of hooks that are designed not to be found easily. Even after you have un-installed (ie forgotten). |

Subject: RE: Tech: Windows 10 Task Manager not working. From: punkfolkrocker Date: 24 Apr 19 - 10:41 AM I'd never do an upgrade fromWin 8.1 or Win 7 to Win 10 after my bad experience in the fist weeks it was made available.. When I must eventually give in and bite the bullet, it'll be fresh install only... |
