ok this is just trivia. I always wonder about the names of Irish fiddle tunes and someone told me once that Julia Delaney was Chief O'Neills (Chicago police chief who published collections of Irish tunes) daughter, married to piper Barney Delaney. The story goes that if you were Irish and a musician you were guaranteed a job on the Chicago Police force. Now Ive heard that Julia Delaney was the wife of the first Director of the Bank of Ireland and that she appears on the (new?) 5 pound note. Any thoughts on this. Also was Mayor Harrison the Chicago mayor and what was so special about his fedora. Petr.

I haven't found your answer yet, but take a look at http://www.irishcoinage.com/ - looks like a fascinating site, although I don't see mention of Julia Delaney.

There is lots of information on this tune in the Ceolas tune index - click here to search It says Julia Delaney was O'Neill's sister-in-law, and was married to Delaney the piper.

She's certainly not the lady on the fiver. That's a lady by the name of Laverty, Lady Laverty or her Mother

This case aside, the names of Irish tunes often have nothing to do with the tunes themselves. You might notice that all the tunes in O'Neil's have titles but that's because O'Neil arbitrarily assigned titles to those tunes that didn't have titles.

I was looking at the liner notes to fiddler Vincent Griffin's album and noticed that he did the same thing. Apparently he felt that a tune shouldn't appear untitled on an album.

Often, for me anyway, the title merely serves as a handle by which to remember the tune.
