The Song Is English & Starts:

City Life Was Getting Us Down
So We Spent A Weekend Out Of Town
Pitched A Tent On A Patch Of Ground
Down By The River

Lit A fire & Drank Some Wine
You Put Your Jeans On Top Of Mine
Said "Come On In, The Water's Fine"
Down By The River

Down By The River
Down By The River
Said "Come On In The Water's Fine"
Down By The River

Can't Remember The Rest.....But it ends with

The Banks Will Soon Be Black & Dead
Down By The River

Looking for the rest of the words or what else are you searching?
I remember Albert Hammond singing a song called "Down by the River" in the 70s. Think it was on the album "It Never Rains In Southern California."
Not sure if that's the one you're looking for, hope this can help.

all the best

menzze

Yes, it is by Albert Hammond, which is a great help when searching. I found the lyrics and chords here

Hope that works!

Well, it does work, but it looks a bit scrappy!

Hey ho - back to the manual!

Some of the lyrics are demonstrably wrong, not surprising since it was evidently transcribed by someone who's native language is not English. Wish I could do half as well in German!

In verse one, it should be "lit a fire" not "little fire". In verse two, "strangest sight" not "strangest side". In the last verse "reeds will wilt", not "region wilt" and "clean white skull" instead of "clean white stone".

That was quicker than typing it all out, anyway! Especially since my HTML skills are still crap.

And it's "ducks" not "dogs" in the last verse, too.

Good luck

Alan

DOWN BY THE RIVER
(Albert Hammond - 1972)

C F
City life was gettin' us down
G C
So we spent the weekend out of town
Am Dm
Pitched the tent on a patch of ground
G C
Down by the river
C F
Lit a fire and drank some wine
G C
You put your jeans on top of mine
Am Dm
Said: come in, the water's fine
G C
Down by the river

C F
Down by the river
G C
Down by the river
Am Dm
Said: come in, the water's fine
G C
Down by the river

C F
Didn't feel too good all night
G C
So we took a walk in the mornin' light
Am Dm
We came across the strangest sight
G C
Down by the river
C F
Silver fish lay on its side
G C
It was washed up by the early tide
Am Dm
I wonder how it died
G C
Down by the river

C F
Down by the river
G C
Down by the river
Am Dm
Silver fish lay on its side
G C
Down by the river

C F
Doctor put us both to bed
G C
He dosed us up and he shook his head
Am Dm
Only foolish people go, he said
G C
Down by the river
C F
Why do willows weep said he
G C
Because they're dying gradually
Am Dm
From the waste from the factories
G C
Down by the river

C F
Down by the river
G C
Down by the river
Am Dm
Why do willows weep said he
G C
Down by the river

D G
In time the riverbanks will die
A D
The reeds will wilt and the ducks will fly
Hm Em
There'll be a tear in the otter's eye
A D
Down by the river
D G
The banks will soon be black and dead
A D
And where the otter's raised his head
Hm Em
Will be a clean white skull instead
A D
Down by the river

D G
Down by the river
A D
Down by the river
Hm Em
The banks will soon be black and dead
A D
Down by the river

[Recorded by Albert Hammond on “The Very Best of Albert Hammond," 1995.
