Subject: Prisoner At the Bar From: GUEST,Dewey Date: 30 Aug 01 - 03:16 AM Does anyone have the words to this old song: Prisoner At the Bar. The opening verse is as follows: The judge was there, the jury too, And people from afar, a fare-haired lad, with tender heart, was prisoner at the bar. The great court room was crouded with, An eager anxious throng, And many a heart was aching for, The lad accused of wrong. I would like to have the complete words to this one if anyone knows it. Many Thanks, Dewey |

Subject: Lyr Add: PRISONER AT THE BAR I From: GUEST Date: 31 Aug 01 - 01:07 AM PRISONER AT THE BAR I The Judge was there, the Jury too An' people from afar A fair young lad of tender youth Was prisoner at the bar The great courtroom was crowded With an eager an' anxious throng An' many a heart was aching for The boy accused of wrong A maiden fair with golden hair Swept swiftly thru the crowd The people gazed in wonder But spoke not one word aloud Then turning to the Judges stand One moment she did pause An' smiling thru her tears, she said, Judge, let me plead the cause O, Judge, let your mind wonder back To those long years gone by An' see your sweetheart and yourself Just like this lad and I If you have children of your own Have mercy I do pray Remember Judge, you'll break my heart If you send Jim away Then turning to the jury box She made her simple plea, This prisoner here is innocent I know you'll set him free Remember you were once a boy Just like this fair young lad If you convict him of this charge You'll drive him to the bad Next Sunday is our wedding day The dreams of wonderous life When at the altar he will make Me his dear loving wife Unless you aim to blight our life Don't say that we must part An' don't forget your darling wife Was once your dear sweetheart The Judge rose softly from his seat The court was still as death The tears were streaming down his cheeks He spoke in faltering breath, I have a little girl at home With just such baby eyes An' she's got mercy scattered here Will flourish in the skies The jury did not leave the room For they had quickly agreed The foreman briefly signed the note And gave the clerk to read Not guilty were the only words The maiden heard them say Her lover clasped her in his arms Love always finds its way SOURCE: As sung by Paralee Weddington, Busch, Arkansas on March 7, 1968, The Max Hunter Folksong Collection; http://www.smsu.edu/folksong/maxhunter/0627/

Subject: ADD: The Great Courthouse From: GUEST Date: 31 Aug 01 - 01:13 AM THE GREAT COURTHOUSE Oh, the great courthouse was crowed on One bright shiney Monday morn And the many a heart was aching there For a boy they accused of wrong The judge was there and the jury too And people from afar A fair young lad of tender youth Was prisoner at the bar A maiden fair with golden hair Swept swiftly thru the crowd The people all gazed and wondered at her But spoke not a word, aloud Then stepping to the jury stand One moment did she pause Then smiling thru her tears, she said Judge, let me plead his cause Now judge, your mind must wander back To the earlier days gone by And see yourself and your sweetheart Just like this boy and I Remember, judge, you once was a boy Just like this fair young lad And if you convict him of this charge You'll drive him to the bad Next Sunday was our wedding day We dream of a wonderous life And at the alter he will make Me his own little darling wife If you have children of your own Have mercy I do pray For remember judge, you'll break my heart If you send Cecil away Unless you wish to blight our life Don't say that we must part For remember judge, your darling wife Was once your own sweetheart Then stepping to the jury stand She made her simple plea Says the prisoner is a innocent lad I know you will set him free The judge rose softly to his feet The court was still as death The tears came trinkling down his cheeks And he spoke in a faltering breath Says, I have a little girl at home With just such babyish eyes She has a sweetheart just like yours For her I know he would die The jury did not leave the box For they had quickly agreed They briefly formed and signed a verdict And gave it to the judge to read Not guilty, was the judge's reply The murderer heard him say She clasped her lover in her arms Says, love always has its way
