Hi all,

Anyone have the lyrics for this tune? The only reference to it I could dig up on the web was this:

Banks of the Arkansas 1.Morris, Neil. Sounds of the South, Atlantic SD-1346, LP (196?), cut# 1a

...but I thought I heard Kate Breslin (sp?) doing it on the radio. It's got a really cool crooked melody.

Thanks,

I don't have the recordings at hand, but my guess is that at some time or another, Jimmy Driftwood recorded the song. Neil Morris was his father. Jimmy was 90 last summer and still sings fairly regularly. I should be able to check on this if I go into Mt. View, AR on Wednesday.

I could find no mention of the song by Kate Brislin and Jody Stecher on their Rounder recordings.

After an extensive remodeling, we are still unable to do any real song research at the Ozark Folk Center. I spent my day digging books out of boxes and reshelving them. I am sure that the song is there somewhere. It is just going to take longer than I thought.

Thanks for your help. If those lyrics ever turn up, post them here or email them to me. I'll keep checking back.

Thanks again!

Jimmy Driftwood used to sing the "Banks of the Buffalo" which is on the DT as the Rocky Banks of the Buffalo. Is that close? (Member in good standing of the Rackensack Soceity)

BANKS OF THE ARKANSAS

Prettiest little girl ever I saw
Stood on the banks of the Arkansas
Her hair was brown and her eyes were green
She was the prettiest little girl ever I'd seen

Well wave the ocean and wave the sea
Wave that pretty girl back to me
Wave the ocean and wave the sand
Wave this time, wave again, now look out

Prettiest little girl ever I saw
Stood on the banks of the Arkansas
Her eyes were wild and her stare was mean
She's the prettiest damn girl ever I seen

Well wave the ocean and wave the sea
Wave that pretty girl back to me
Wave the ocean and wave the shore
Wave this time, wave no more

At last we have words and it only took ten years.   The words in the chorus are used in a local Stone County Arkansas squared Dance.

Go to Youtube. Type in

Banks of the Arkansas

You will have two videos to choose from. I would select the first.

PS

If I did music notation, I'd take a stab at it. However . . . .
