The first track on Joanie Madden's CD "Song of the Irish Whistle" is called "The Immigrant." I couldn't find the lyrics in the database. Is anybody out there familiar with this song? Do lyrics exist for it?

Kevin

Everything I found says it is a whistle song, so I would guess no lyrics. Does the CD have lyrics?

Nope. None of the lyrics for any of the songs are on the CD jacket. But Down By The Salley Gardens is the second track. And the Black Rose, Roisin Dubh is the eighth track and I found lyrics for that, but I couldn't match them up to the tune.

Hi, Kevin - if you can give us a transcription of what you can figure out by listening, somebody may be able to help you. Name of songwriter might help, too - but titles alone can be deceiving.

I didn't mean a lyrics insert with the CD, I meant is there singing on this track on the CD?

Many Irish slow airs have words because they are actually song airs, but some are just written to be played as Instrumentals. We usually distinguish between them by referring to the ones with words as songs and the ones without as Tunes. I'm not familiar with any song called the Immigrant, but I could be wrong. I haven't heard Joanie Madden play it. There are a few songs with the word Immigrant in them such as "Immigrant eyes" and Bob Dylan's "I pity the Poor immigrant" but I don't suppose its either of those.

The difficulty in matching up the words of Roisin Dubh to the air is that they are probably a translation from the Gaelic version and may be a litteral translation not intended to be singable. There are many excellent translations of this song, my favourite one being the one that starts "My dark Rosaleen Do not sigh do not weep" - Might be by Thomas Davis (or was it James Clarence Mangan?). Roisin Dubh is usually sung/played with a lot of ornamentation, so fitting even the original gaelic words to it involves a lot of work, mostly elongating vowels over a number of notes to fit the tune.

According to the liner notes, this one's written by Brian Keane and Joanie Madden... and it appears to be an instrumental only.

Thanks everybody. I love my Joannie Madden "Song of the Irish Whistle" CD. I even bought it twice. The first one was broken when somebody forgot to put it back in the case. I'm so inspired, I think I'll go record a cassette tape so I can listen to it in my work car.
