Old-timey gospel - recommendations?

Hey gang -

I'm looking for a good collection or two of old-timey gospel tunes. Ideally, I'd like to find a disk/box set that has good versions of standards like Rock of Ages, Rank Strangers, Hallelujah I'm Ready to Go, etc. Does such a collection exist commercially?

As a side note, I found this interesting list of gospel favorites. Does anyone have other albums/artists that they would recommend? Who is considered "the gold standard" in old timey gospel - the Stanley Brothers? The Louvin Brothers?

Their are two quartets that come to mind for the songs you mentioned:
Heehaw Quartet and Fairfield Four (I think). Granpa Jones was in both groups, and I think that the first one was the Fairfield Four. I'm sure that the second was heehaw Quartet. CDs are available for both.

There are many other collections of these available, in all kinds of formats. Put the songs you wanted into a search at Amazon, and see wjere they turn-up.

Another choice, depending on your taste, is the Chuckwagon gang.

I'm looking for an old gospel tune called : The Great Judgment Morning or I Dreamed The Great Judgment Morning It came out between the 20s and 40s.

The Fairfield Four is a black gospel quartet that's been together for more than 60 years. The three oldest members of the group sang a song in Oh Brother, where Art Thou, acting as gravediggers.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "old-timey." This being Mudcat and all. Old-time music is usually considered pre-bluegrass string band music. If you just mean old-time gospel, then Wilco is right... it could be anything from black gospel quartet to The Stanley Brothers, with everything in between. There are a lot of stylistic differences in there, so it depends on your taste..

The thread that you included in you original posting certainly has a lot of good contemorary recordings of ol gospel.

The other group that Grandpa Jones was in was The Browns Ferry Four, along with the Delmore Brothers and Merle Travis.

Jerry - By "old-timey (with a "y") gospel", I guess I meant pre-bluegrass string band music that addresses sacred/spiritual themes. Some of the links that Susan provided referred to this as "country gospel" or "mountain gospel".

BTW, I love black gospel too, but I already have some of that music, and I have an idea of where to look for more. I'm much more ignorant when it comes to country/mountain gospel. Most of what I know comes from contemporary sources like Doc Watson, Bob Dylan, the O Brother soundtrack, etc. I'm aware of the Carters, the Stanleys, and the Louvins, but didn't know where to begin.

Susan - What can I say except "Wow!" The links you provided have me drinking through a firehose. ;) Let me do some MP3/AIFF downloading & listening, then I'll PM you for anything I feel like I'm missing. Thanks!

One other thing - how do I isolate the gospel songs in the Max Hunter collection? I'd like to send a link to other people without making them go through the Mudcat message board.
