The only thing that concerns me about file sharing is the passing-on of a virus. I NEVER use someone elses nail file for that very reason!

The other thing that concerns me about file sharing (as normally constituted) is that you have to leave a drive on your computer open to who-ever wants to come take a look. This is not wise.

Fifteen months ago I got the kid a new PC computer...as a contract pledge for successfuly completing two years of college.

He has run that thing night and day, 24/7, ever since, downloading music and movies on a highspeed connection.

He has no protection - he has nothing to protect.

Visiting him last weekend we ran a thorough virus scan. I expected his machine to be teaming with the most virulant virus infestation imaginable.

I was shocked - it was totally - clean.

Iffen the kid was cruisin' around at college, he was probably saved by the college's server. Iffen he was doin' it at home he was either lucky or the broadband supplier has a virus killer on the server.

If his PC *was* used by a peer-to-peer or distributed computing group an antivirus scan wouldn't detect it.

In any case, get him both firewall and an antivirus. Norton (Symantec) are good, but so is McAfee, Datafellows, and others.

And see to it that he keeps them up-to-date.

Since the thread has drifted to the virus question, I'll offer that Mickey$oft doesn't make AV software as such, but they do have a rather long list of people who do, at KB Article 49500.

Gareth might find his browser condom from one of those listed.

To the original subject of the thread - the article by Tim O'Reilly, I'll add the comment that O'Reilly Publishing is the last remaining publisher for whom I'll automatically assume that a book (1) will contain useful information, and (2) will contain the information described in the title.. His position, as founder of "O'Reilly" would give him considerable credibility; but the article stands on its own. It raises - and promotes - some very good points, and deserves to be read.

Note that at the article (linked in the 2d post here) the author's name is a link to information about some very interesting stuff - some of which I intend to pursue, and at the end of the article there is a link back to the "P2P Home" that also opens some interesting vistas.

Well worth exploring.
