Subject: Lyr Req: Wales: Wild White Rose of My Heart
From: GUEST,Dr Price

Can you help? This is an email which came to me. I suspect the sender is American:

"Hi - I used to sing a song from Wales called White Wild Rose of my Heart, but I lost the lyrics. Can you help me find them? Thanks."

I'm pretty sure it's "Lliw Gwyn Rhosyn yr Haf". The scansion works. It's most recently been published in Can y Werin (www.gwynn.co.uk) with a new English translation by Gwynn Thomas. It seems to me that it might be in that old collection that Boosey & Hawkes published years and year ago - and I can't find my copy. It was popular with the North American Welsh so that may be where your correspondent learned it. On 'googling' it, it seems that Gustav Holst might have arranged it for choirs too.

Oh - I should have mentioned that it's also on the 2CD re-issue, "Mered: 50 traditional folk songs". Anyone who wants to learn Welsh folk songs in the original Welsh should get this! It's great! The only weird thing is that they give all the words and notes for disc 1, but not disc 2!

Dioch yn fawr iawn, Sian! I'm just about to look up Lliw Gwyn Rhosyn Yr Haf, although with your considerable knowledge of Welsh tradition I know I won't to look too far!

I am but a grasshopper to your kangaroo, Mick.

OK - it's late, I'm tired, and that was just one plain dumb analogy. But you get my drift. You're the daddy.

Some news: The sender (Forrest Evans) comes from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sorry for the Diolch faux-pas, which appeared minus the 'l'.

LLIW GWYN RHOSYN YR HAF / WHITE ROSE OF MY HEART is in a book called "Folk Songs of the World, Gathered from More Than 100 Countries" by Charles Haywood.

A fair good morrow, lovely maiden, White, wild rose of my heart
For you my soul is sorrow laden, White, wild rose of my heart
Nay cease, dull oaf, your idle chatter, The silliest babble ever I heard
You and your oaths are no great matter - That's truth in a single word

Your kiss is sweeter far than honey, White etc
Such nectar ne'er was bought for money, White etc
And yours, for all your fond devotion, The silliest etc
As loathsome as a doctor's potion - That's truth etc

Ah me! salt tears, you'll still be flowing, White etc
But kiss me once and I'll be going, White etc
Oh, no, my love, I cannot grieve you, A tenderer speech you never have heard!
I gave you two, fifteen I'll give you - That's truth etc
