I wanted to let Mudcat know that the CD re-issue of the RED CLAY RAMBLERS' 1979 live album CHUCKIN' THE FRIZZ is now available, as well as their 1981 release HARD TIMES, as well as 1980's MEETING IN THE AIR - "Songs of the Carter Family sung and played by Tommy Thompson, Mike Craver and Jim Watson". These CDs are all on sale on-line for $15.95 each at http://www.mikecraver.com/store.html -- the price includes FREE SHIPPING to all US locations, however international rates apply to UK, EU, AU, CA etc. (info at above site.)

" Any true Ramblers fan knows that CHUCKIN' THE FRIZZ marks the band's finest hour on record, a well-produced live recording of the rollicking 1979 lineup (Watson, Thompson, Hicks, Herrick and Craver) performing at the old Cat's Cradle. This is a superior string band at the height of its powers, spinning out traditionals and originals with inspired, infectious fervor." ---NORTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT WEEKLY

"From the first notes of their 1981 landmark release HARD TIMES' opening track "Chesapeake Bay," it's clear the Red Clay Ramblers were not your average old time music ensemble. Dixieland horns, barrelhouse piano, barbershop harmonies and driving stringband rhythms all combine for an entertaining crash course in American music. Whether sublime ("Wind and Rain") or downright ridiculous ("Chicken"), the Red Clay Ramblers bring their virtuosity, intensity and enthusiasm to every song they play." --- ROUNDER ARCHIVE

"MEETING IN THE AIR may well be the first tribute album to the Carter Family... and a fine album it is."
----OLD TIME HERALD

I just got "Chuckin" and "Hard Times" a couple of weeks ago and am really glad I did. I have to confess that I'm young enough literally to be a lifelong RCR fan, starting with my parents' LP of "RCR & Fiddlin' Al McCanless" (1974, which is also available on CD and which I also recommend).

Now we need to get "Faded Love" re-released and all will be right with the world.

Mike Craver himself sent me the confirmation-of-order email, which was pretty cool.

Thanks for the info. I have the LPs, but that's so YESTERDAY, and I don't have a turntable in my car.

Nobody like the original Ramblers. We used to see them every time they came to the Birchmere, and they were always superb.

Does anybody know: did they ever record "I Wish I was in Peoria?" I taped it when they were on the Prairie Home COmpanion years and years ago, but the tape broke.

Peoria, Snuff Dippin' Woman, You've Been A friend to Me, Dardenella, Look At The Moon and anything during Shaun Colvin's short stint with the band are sadly among the unreleased items from their live repetoire. An outtakes/radio show apperences album/compellation/box set would be nice. Probably saw you at the Birchmere and never knew it.

PHC shows are archived. You should be able to get an MP3 of the song if you record the stream. PM email info if you can't do that, and I will look it up when I get some time free.

It appears the PHC archive only goes back to 96, with 2 shows from 85, unless I'm missing something. The show with "Peoria" probably predates that.

I'm pretty sure I have that song--Peoria--taped off the radio at the time. But, despite all the information on Mudcat, I still haven't figured out how to transfer tape to CD. And I have to do it soon--I have quite a few tapes I made from the radio--and obviously they won't last forever. But I'm not very adept technically.

As you say, best solution would be if the Ramblers actually recorded it themselves, and we could buy that CD.

Blessings abound in the lives of all who share GOOD music, and news about same. Thanks, guys.
RCR came to Austin to play for the Austin Friends of Traditional Music. God, they were fabulous. (We already knew that--why we invited them,) My mother(Hally Wood) & I sang on the program the same day. Afterwards Tommy T. talked to Mama a while & we sang a few Carter Family things together in a corner. Sigh. The good ol' days....Tw (um--what happened to my cookie? I had to enter my name myself)
