Subject: Lyr Req: Always The Bridesmaid From: GUEST,Les in Oz Date: 12 Dec 06 - 05:11 AM I'm trying to find the words and music to the old music hall song - Why Am I Always The Bridemaid. I think it was written by Fred W Leigh in about 1926. I need it to sing at my Grandaughter's wedding on news year eve. Regards, Les in Oz |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Always The Bridesmaid From: Flash Company Date: 12 Dec 06 - 09:33 AM Why am I always the Bridesmaid, And never the blushing bride, Ding dong, wedding bells only ring for other gels, But one fine day, oh let it be soon, I will wake up in the morning, Of my own honeymoon. That was the chorus. Probably some verses somewhere but Gran never sang them! FC |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Always The Bridesmaid From: Billy Weeks Date: 12 Dec 06 - 10:47 AM It was sung by Lily Morris and her delicious performance is available on several CDs including one in the Windyridge catalogue. There is also a 1930s Pathé film record of her performance with a hilarious final dance. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Always The Bridesmaid From: GUEST,Lynx Date: 12 Dec 06 - 11:15 PM I can't find a full set of words anywhere. I tried Google, Jeeves and Dogpile. Found the chorus but no verses which seems odd as eveyone knows the song. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ALWAYS THE BRIDESMAID (Collins/Leigh) From: JennieG Date: 14 Dec 06 - 01:19 AM This is going to take a bit of typing, so bear with me! Always the Bridesmaid (Charles Collins & Fred W. Leigh) 1. Why am I dress'd in these beautiful clothes? What is the matter with me? I've been the bridesmaid for twenty two brides, This time'll make twenty three. Twenty two ladies I've helped off the shelf, No doubt it seems a bit strange, Being the bridesmaid is no good to me, And I think I could do with a change.
Why am I always the Bridesmaid, And never the blushing bride, Ding dong, wedding bells only ring for other gels, But one fine day, oh let it be soon, I will wake up in the morning, Of my own honeymoon. 2. Twenty two times have I gone to the church, Follow'd the bride up the aisle, Twenty two ladies have answered "I will", Meaning "I won't" all the while. Twenty two couples I've seen go away, Just him and her on their own, Twenty two times I have wish'd it was me, And gone back to Mother alone. Chorus..... 3. I had a good chance a week or two back, Took my young man home to tea, Mother got playful and gave him a pinch, Pinch'd my "fi-nan-cy" from me. Being a widow, she knew what to do, No use for me to complain. When they got married today, if you please, I was only the bridesmaid again! Chorus..... Copyright 1917, by Charles Collins & Fred W. Leigh. Hope this helps! It's in a wonderful book, Mammoth Folio 11, Songs from the music hall, words, chords, music. A gem of a book. Cheers JennieG |
