Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 18 Mar 08 - 08:04 AM So far August 2 is working. The sound system will be greatly appreciated, Charlie. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Mar 08 - 08:09 AM We can even loan a large "Blue Peter" flag, to signal that this nautical musical get-together is outward bound! Do you suppose the snow will have melted by then? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 18 Mar 08 - 08:50 AM No. Wear boots. Something will be very deep even if it isn't snow. I expect some Maine storytellers to perform. |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 18 Mar 08 - 10:20 AM ARGGHHHH!!!! Beach-to-Beacon is August 2. Anyone know how this will affect our event? It might actually add to the PM crowd but I am concerned about traffic. Your thoughts? |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Mar 08 - 10:32 AM Let's run with it! Seriously, you should look into it as a possible conflict. The running event will probably be taking place in the morning and may not be a major conflict. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Becca72 Date: 18 Mar 08 - 10:50 AM Mary, Beach to Beacon runs through Cape Elizabeth..Crescent Beach to Portland Head so I wouldn't expect it to be that much of a problem for you. Spring Point is much too far to walk to either of the B2B locations so parking shouldn't be a problem, either. And as you said, it may increase your afternoon crowd. |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 18 Mar 08 - 12:17 PM The museum folks said the same thing. OK August 2, 2008 I will email everyone tonight and see who is available. The museum is working on food for the performers, a tent (or use of the Maritime office for breaks, one sound system is in place,...so what else do we need for the day itself? Anyone need a stage? I see us before a crowd on blankets and beach chairs. I am working on some goodies for kids. The museum is getting permission from the town to sell CDs - yeah we will need a permit. Anyone have an interesting donation jar or box? I have a treasure chest of sorts. We will need a few emcees, maybe some lyric sheets to pass around, and ideas. We will need to coordinate who is singing what and when - I see jacqui managing this (bossy old bitch is probably the only one who can handle it). Tomorrow, once the emails go out, I will start a new thread with the date and some basics. We will also need s menu for a buffet supper later at my place, beds for sleepovers, etc. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Mar 08 - 12:17 PM Maybe it would be an idea to time shift our event an hour or two, just to allow for less of a clash? We might even be able to get some media publicity on the back of the run as well. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 18 Mar 08 - 01:04 PM Good idea Jacqui. Maybe we can draw the crowd from the race over to Spring Point for a picnic lunch with music. 10,000 people - yikes! |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: TRUBRIT Date: 18 Mar 08 - 10:36 PM Sounding like fun!!!!!! Aren't I a bossy bitch who can manage organizing people too! No, I will concede to the world champion.......JC!! |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: jacqui.c Date: 19 Mar 08 - 08:22 AM Thank you Deb! At last - something I excel at. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: kendall Date: 19 Mar 08 - 08:27 AM I can no longer sing as you know, but I could do a demonstration of how to use a lead line, and tell a story along with it. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 19 Mar 08 - 08:31 AM If you don't agree to appear and tell a story, I will cancel the event, Captain. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Mar 08 - 08:43 AM Sure, give Kendall enough lead line, but stand way back! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: kendall Date: 19 Mar 08 - 12:35 PM It has been known to land in a compost heap. |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: TRUBRIT Date: 19 Mar 08 - 11:31 PM Good heavens -- no one will come if Kendall doesn't tell a story....! I think the Beach to Beacon might be a benefit.......more people around. PLEASE tell me what you want me to do and I will be there......are we definite for August 2 now? |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Micca Date: 20 Mar 08 - 07:56 AM Typical!! the Skipper looking for an excuse to swing the Lead!!!! If I am in the vicinity I will be delighted to help in any capacity I can. From Dossing around on deck (I am A* at this) to hurling abuse in strange nautical slang, you can count on me. ..Put A Man in the Chains to heave the lead the Old Man shouts to wake the Dead Come and get your oats my son Whip Jamboree, Whip Jamboree, with your long tailed...etc. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Marc Bernier Date: 20 Mar 08 - 08:00 AM I'm available on Sat 8/2. I'v 'penciled' in the date. If you'd like my participation, could someone let me know? Marc Bernier |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 08 - 08:05 AM August 2, 11AM - 4PM I will start another thread when I have a firm list of performers. And Kendall can swing the lead, whatever that is as long as it doesn't frighten the horses. At some point, "The Shanty Man Who Never Went To Sea" may be required if you really are going to attend, Micca. Shall I refresh the Where's Micca? thread? |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: kendall Date: 20 Mar 08 - 08:23 AM Swinging the lead requires both hands. How can a man in the chains keep his footing while both hands are busy? |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Charley Noble Date: 20 Mar 08 - 08:40 AM Bunge cords? Actually I do believe they wrapped a length of rope around their body and secured it to the shrouds. Does this special event have an official name yet? "Portland Harbor Maritime Fest" or some such thing? "Spring Point Sea Music Expo"? "Casco Bay Shanty Bray"? Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: GUEST,julia Date: 20 Mar 08 - 10:20 AM Mary- please add us to your list castlebay@castlebay.net thanks |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 08 - 10:27 AM Thank you, Julia!!!!! Charlie - I am still doing the basics. Your assignment is to come up with a name that features the museum, the music, the lighthouse, and whatever and will attract the most visitors. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Charley Noble Date: 20 Mar 08 - 11:09 AM Sinsull- Let's lay this out for further pondering: The Region: Casco Bay The Museum: Portland Harbor Museum The Music/Storytelling: Sea Music/Nautical Music/Shanties and Forebitters/Contemporary & Traditional The Lighthouse: Spring Point Light The Battery: there's a half-moon stone construction Civil War era battery there forming an amphitheater whose name escapes me Whatever: FREE Wonder if some of the renaissance fair folks might be invited. They do neat things with the swords and they look wicked sharp. We had a great time with them last year in Rockland at the Downeast Pirate Festival. There are also Civil War re-enactors who also might liven things up. Wonder if anyone would want to set up food booths? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Becca72 Date: 20 Mar 08 - 11:18 AM A name that will atract the most visitors...."Free Beer" :-) |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: David Coffin Date: 20 Mar 08 - 11:35 AM You can count me in that day if there is room on the bill. Sounds like it could be fun. Do we need to wear running shoes? Should we line the route singing running chanteys? |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 08 - 11:56 AM No food or craft booths. The school will not allow for legal (permit) reasons. I am struggling to get the CD table approved. There will be food and drink for the performers. The gift shop has water on sale for guests. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: Micca Date: 20 Mar 08 - 01:04 PM As you well Know Kendall, "the Chains" are an arrangement of ropework and sometimes chain that held the leadsman at an angle of about 45 degrees protruding over the ships side, (Starboard if right handed Port if left handed) and secured him so that he had both hands free, he could then use his "good hand" to "heave the lead" forrard along the line of motion of the ship, letting the line pay out between the fingers of his other hand, the marker in his hand when the line went slack indicating the depth of the water, each fathom had a distinctive marker of different texture so that it could be held to the lips , if it was cold or dark , and be recognised by the leadsman. |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 08 - 01:09 PM Thank you Micca. Now I know who is going to amn the CD table...with Kendall. There will always be room for a man from Gloucester. Thank you! |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 08 - 02:54 PM Actually there is a brick wall over the water (at high tide). Ok Kendall, you're on! |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Aug 08 From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 08 - 07:58 PM With only five hours and the quality of musicians who have volunteered their services, I do not want sword fights or pirates distracting from the music. If I can get the museum to agree to a festival another time, then it may be appropriate. This will be my last post to this thread. Look for a new one. Thank you all for the enthusiastic support. Mary |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Aug 08 From: kendall Date: 20 Mar 08 - 10:06 PM The ship I sailed in didn't have chains. The leadsman stood on a firm deck just aft of the curve of the bows. We had one smart ass Bos'ns mate who was heaving the lead, and he thought it was silly because we had depth sounders to do that. He kept heaving the lead and calling out, by the mark 7...by the deep 6 etc. but it got to him and he yelled, "NO bottom at the pink rag" The Officer of the deck yelled, "There's no pink rag on a lead line"! Bosn's mate yelled back, "There's no F*****g bottom either"! |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Aug 08 From: SINSULL Date: 20 Apr 08 - 06:53 PM The date is final. Starting time 9AM on August 2. Set up time 7:30AM and I will buy the coffee. Roll n Go has generously loaned us a sound system. I am hoping for a second/back up. Let me know if you have any ideas. Performers: I will be in contact with each of you to confirm your slot, discuss your music choices and eliminate repetition, although I can't imagine that it will be a real problem. I am thrilled at the line-up. In no particular order: Barry Finn (half of Finn & Haddie) Micca Patterson Linn Schulz Tom Hall Holly, known as Maeve Jeri Corlew Castlebay (Fred and Julia) Marc Bernier David Jones Captain Kendall Morse Gordon Bok Roll 'n Go David Coffin Peter and Joann Sousa plus fellow ADVENTURERs Glousterman We will start at 9AM sharp and end with a finale at 3:30. Post festival meal and music at my house for anyone who can make it. There will be a room at the museum set aside for performers to rest, eat, warm up, cool down, etc. Coffee, breakfast, lunch, beverages will be provided for performers and helpers. There will be tables for CD sales. I am working on volunteers to organize and man the tables. If you prefer to ship your CDs ahead of time, I will arrange that with you. There will be a jar passed around to help pay the performers' travel expenses. Admission is free so I expect people will be willing to support us. The money will be divided evenly among the ACTS. A solo performer will get the same as a group. The Beach to Beacon race which attracts 10,000 spectators, is that morning so I expect a large crowd from about 11 - 2PM. The museum will handle most of the PR but Jacqui and I are planning to do some as well. If you a website, specific info you want included, etc., let us know ASAP. If parking is going to be an issue, I will have the museum arrange reserved spaces for the performers and a pass of some kind for you to get in. We have several homes willing to house itinerant musicians. If you are coming from afar, count on a bed and a hot breakfast. What haven't I covered? |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Au From: TRUBRIT Date: 20 Apr 08 - 07:58 PM Breakfast - you haven't covered breakfast. I'll have Tom make some of his wonderful sour cream twists (to die for, I promise). If parking is an issue for anyone, our house is within an easy walk of the location --- the street will be packed because of the Beach to Beacon but they can't park on our driveway!!!!! and our driveway is huge....... By that date my younger daughter will have left home again to move to Louisiana to be with some guy she met on line (best not to ask) so our guest bedroom is available as is a a VERY rough and ready room with a couch and a door (for privacy)...having to get anywhere at that hour in the morning sounds brutal to me so people who want to come up the night before and crash are welcome |
Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Au From: Charley Noble Date: 20 Apr 08 - 09:50 PM Sinsull- That's a very impressive line-up, well worth traveling hundreds of miles to see and hear. Cheerily, Charley Noble Roll & Go |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Aug 08 From: SINSULL Date: 20 Apr 08 - 10:41 PM I know, Charley, I know. And I am so amazed at the people who have volunteered to perform. What an incredible line-up of talent. |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Au From: maeve Date: 21 Apr 08 - 08:13 AM Oh my, Sinsull! What an honor to be included in that lineup! I'm really looking forward to it. Thank you for making this new event come to life. |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Au From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Apr 08 - 08:54 PM "Set up time 7:30AM" There better be coffee! Let's see, it takes me about 50 minutes to get to the festive site in South Portland, assuming the Casco Bay Bridge is in operation, so I probably should pack the sound equipment into the van the night before, and hop out of bed by 6:30 am. I can do that but I'm not sure Judy can. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Au From: David Coffin Date: 22 Apr 08 - 08:34 PM I seem to be listed twice and I don't want to appear greedy. A note for clarification, identity revealed; Gloucesterman is just David Coffin wondering what name to use other than his own because everyone else has really cool "screen names". Looking forward to this event! David |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Au From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Apr 08 - 08:41 PM Trubrit- Thanks for the offer but we prefer to start from Richmond. However, the important question is will there be an audience at 9 am for whoever is performing. That's very early to start a special event, I'm thinking. But if we're just performing for ourselves, rather than the general public, that may not be a relevant question. I'm happy to be a "passenger" on this train and not a "conductor" or "engineer." Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Maritime Concert Portland, ME - who's in -2 Aug 08 From: SINSULL Date: 25 Apr 08 - 01:53 PM Deborah, I may have a special job for you if you have time on the 2nd. Someone will have to keep an eye on the performers' room both to see that they are properly cared for and to keep out overweaning fans. In addition, if someone simply needs alone time, you can offer yourself as a Gatekeeper and allow them some space. Watching to see that the food is replenished, tableware is available, some basic housekeeping, etc. Can you be trusted to behave yourself around Gordon Bok? M |
