Subject: ME Concert - who's in?????
From: SINSULL
Date: 26 Feb 08 - 06:58 PM

I have been playing wsith the idea of a shanty/maritime concert in conjunction with the Maritime Museum located on the SPCC Campous in South Portland Maine, right by Spring Point Lighthouse. This just came from Rebecca:
Hi Mary,

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad that it seems you will be able to get treatment. Thanks for going ahead and checking with some shanty singers. Here's the situation. I've spoken with Mark and it looks like this year in particular we're on a tight programming budget because we got less in a grant for the lecture series than we were hoping. Still, if the musicians are willing to play without pay and take the opportunity to sell cds and put a bucket out I think the could really work.

We won't have money for a tent, but if we could select a date and a rain date ahead of time and include that in our publicity, hopefully that will solve that issue.

In terms of publicity, we can get information out to museum supporters through our newsletter and to the public with simple fliers that I can print up. Also I'll be able to send out a press release and get it into local papers. I will also be able to send out an email to all our membership that has that capability and put it on our website.

We're flexible on what date/day we do this. It certainly does not have to be June, so I would say that working with the performers to choose a date would be the best move as long as it isn't any of these, when we already have events scheduled: May 15, June 21, July 16, 19, 20, August 3.

Thanks so much for your help with this, let me know if you think this will work.

Take care,

Rebecca

So far, Peter and Joann and hopefully the Adventure Crew will be available as will Linn and Tom. Kendall is an almost definite for a recital.

Who else is interested and what dates work best?
Keep in mind. I can provide overnight accomodations and a meal. Finn and Haddie? Roll 'n Go? John Roberts? Gordon Bok? Anyone from oversea going to be in the neighborhood? Any suggestions for artists who may be available?

Tims is very short - almost as short as the money.

Mary

This is a great idea!

It's also a great location! The Portland Harbor Museum is adjacent to a semi-circular stone Civil War battery which would make a fine amphitheatre.

However, I puzzled by the suggested dates. Usually such things are scheduled on the same day or week of the month, 3rd Thursday or whatever. I don't determine any pattern in the suggested dates but may a 7-day week isn't being used.

I would favor a 1st Saturday or Sunday to avoid some known conflicts.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Those were not suggested dates - they are dates that would not be suitable as there are other events already scheduled.

I'm almost in agreement with Charlie, except I would go for a first Saturday as I hope that Linn and I will be both working by that time , and will have to be alert of a Monday morning.

Also, at present, we don't have the option of selling CDs - Tom

Speaking out of turn as always, it seems to me that there is a real
opportunity for any venue to call a 'gathering of the chanteymen' at
some suitable seaside setting in the US Northeast.

Avoiding of course other key events--- (e.g. Mystic, Old Songs, the
Squeeze-In, NEFFA, etc.)

I'm not going to belabor how Mystic Seaport has sort of abrogated
this role, that's been amply hashed and re-hashed elsewhere.

I'm talking a total non-commercial "we're here for love of the
music" sort of event which is strategically inserted in the annual
schedule at a time when anyone who happens to be about is welcomed.

Organize some workshops and master classes, let the public come and
go as they please and displease. Put musicians up in local folkies'
homes.

Something like the first decade-and-a-half of Mystic.

The venue being mentioned is on a community college campus, unless I
miss my guess? By the Atlantic?

Me and the boys would love to come but families get jealous, Portsmouth is a definite goer some time shortly but I know Jo wants to return and toting along a lot of "unbelievers" gets very tricky indeed, we had a clash of interests on the last trip which had a number of "pet lips" when "music comes first" issues were raised. However, for our next trip these experiencies will be cited as reasons why they should stay at home or grin and bear it! Having said all that the issues were not with Jo who, for the greater part, entered into the spirit of it all and thoroughly enjoyed the mainiac hospitality and country.

How do you all feel about July 5? Friday night bar-b-que at my house. Saturday afternoon of music at the museum. This is a thought not a definite date.

Anyone have any ideas about demonstrating raising sails, pumping water out, raising an anchor?

Something along the lines of Gordon's "Donkey Engine" Sinsull?

I'm interested in your plans, too, though the dear knows whether I could attend. You might ask about January Men if you talk with GB, also Cindy Kallet would be a wonderful addition if you can get her to sign on.

It'll be fun to see where this leads.

Saturday, July 5th, doesn't conflict with anything important that I'm doing.

And maybe by then our current glacier will have melted away!

Alison Freeman and I have just nailed down today a monthly concert series hosted by the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath for 3rd Sunday evenings, 7:30 pm, beginning in June and ending in August. Details will follow once on a new thread once we've confirmed our proposed slate of performers. Bath is about 45 minutes further up the coast from Portland.

My, my!; What have we here?

Been away from the 'Cat for a while, other than to pick the DB for some lyrics now and them.

Tonight I just got sort of a whim to check back in for auld lang syne, and sha-zamm; here's a sea chantey thing going down - jolly good!

Just last weekend met Captain Bunker at the Ancient Ones gun show in Augusta, and was lamenting as to how I miss those good ol' chantey jams.

Was sort of letting the music go since we moved from Yarmouth up here to Monmouth (on Rt. 202 between Lewiston & Augusta) but have been hankering to get back into it lately.

The 4th of July weekend is apt to make for interesting travel, what with all the traffic. But the idea is certainly interesting!

Do keep us posted, folks - I'd love to get back "on deck" with ye again!

This is a one time event sponsored by the museum. I fit goes well, we might be able to make it a monthly event. Butfor now:
These are the dates available:
Saturday July 5,12, or 26
Saturday August 2,9,16,23 or 30.

Place:
On the lawn by the lighthose, Fort Preble and the Museum.

My vision:
A day of maritime music and story telling starting about 9AM and ending about 2PM with a finale similar to the one in Portsmouth.

Audience:
Museum members, and families plus whoeveer we can pull in.

Money:
None BUT there will be tables for CD sales and a donation jar making the rounds.

We need:
A sound system (the museum is looking into it as am I.
Performers (enthusiastic and able to work in extreme conditions)
Some kind of giveaways for the kids or prizes to keep the audience involved. New junk preferred.

Post concert at my house with beds available or a place on the floor.

I will email those of you who have expressed an interest. If you have friends who wish to participate, let me know. This will be a fun day for all, I promise.

Sinsull-

This sounds like a workable plan.

The best dates for myself or other Roll & Go members would be July 5, August 2, August 9, August 30.

Other dates conflict with scheduled concerts and other special events.

I probably should mention again the monthly sea music concert series that Alison Freeman and I are coordinating at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. This series, in honor of Bill and Gene Bonyun, will be held Sunday evenings beginning June 22 (Bob Zentz; Alison Freeman & Charlie Ipcar); July 20 (Bob Webb); August 17 (Roll & Go). All concerts begin at 7:30 pm. Location is Long Reach Hall. Admission is $12 for the general public, $10 for Museum members, half price for children. For more information or reservations call: 207-443-1316.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

LOL
The city is sponsoring a triathalon with bicycles running right thru our site on August 9.

How do Saturday July 12, or 26
August 2
work for everyone?

We probably have a tent for performers can cool off and get a cold drink. The museum is looking into lunch. If not the usual Portland caterers will feed you.

Still no leads on a sound system. Can anyone help? Two would be better...

Mary-

July 12 Roll & Go has a gig at the Georgetown Community Center in Five Islands. July 25 and 26 I'm coordinating Richmond's first Maritime Festival (Wild Wave on the Kennebec). August 2 is open and we'd love to help, and we could provide one decent sound system.

We really should talk.

Mary,

Beach to Beacon runs through Cape Elizabeth..Crescent Beach to Portland Head so I wouldn't expect it to be that much of a problem for you. Spring Point is much too far to walk to either of the B2B locations so parking shouldn't be a problem, either. And as you said, it may increase your afternoon crowd.

The museum folks said the same thing.
OK August 2, 2008
I will email everyone tonight and see who is available. The museum is working on food for the performers, a tent (or use of the Maritime office for breaks, one sound system is in place,...so what else do we need for the day itself?
Anyone need a stage? I see us before a crowd on blankets and beach chairs.
I am working on some goodies for kids. The museum is getting permission from the town to sell CDs - yeah we will need a permit.
Anyone have an interesting donation jar or box? I have a treasure chest of sorts.
We will need a few emcees, maybe some lyric sheets to pass around, and ideas.
We will need to coordinate who is singing what and when - I see jacqui managing this (bossy old bitch is probably the only one who can handle it).
Tomorrow, once the emails go out, I will start a new thread with the date and some basics.
We will also need s menu for a buffet supper later at my place, beds for sleepovers, etc.

Maybe it would be an idea to time shift our event an hour or two, just to allow for less of a clash?

We might even be able to get some media publicity on the back of the run as well.

I will start another thread when I have a firm list of performers.

And Kendall can swing the lead, whatever that is as long as it doesn't frighten the horses.

At some point, "The Shanty Man Who Never Went To Sea" may be required if you really are going to attend, Micca. Shall I refresh the Where's Micca? thread?

Bunge cords?

Actually I do believe they wrapped a length of rope around their body and secured it to the shrouds.

Does this special event have an official name yet? "Portland Harbor Maritime Fest" or some such thing? "Spring Point Sea Music Expo"? "Casco Bay Shanty Bray"?

Sinsull-

Let's lay this out for further pondering:

The Region: Casco Bay

The Museum: Portland Harbor Museum

The Music/Storytelling: Sea Music/Nautical Music/Shanties and Forebitters/Contemporary & Traditional

The Lighthouse: Spring Point Light

The Battery: there's a half-moon stone construction Civil War era battery there forming an amphitheater whose name escapes me

Whatever: FREE

Wonder if some of the renaissance fair folks might be invited. They do neat things with the swords and they look wicked sharp. We had a great time with them last year in Rockland at the Downeast Pirate Festival. There are also Civil War re-enactors who also might liven things up.

Wonder if anyone would want to set up food booths?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

As you well Know Kendall, "the Chains" are an arrangement of ropework and sometimes chain that held the leadsman at an angle of about 45 degrees protruding over the ships side, (Starboard if right handed Port if left handed) and secured him so that he had both hands free, he could then use his "good hand" to "heave the lead" forrard along the line of motion of the ship, letting the line pay out between the fingers of his other hand, the marker in his hand when the line went slack indicating the depth of the water, each fathom had a distinctive marker of different texture so that it could be held to the lips , if it was cold or dark , and be recognised by the leadsman.

With only five hours and the quality of musicians who have volunteered their services, I do not want sword fights or pirates distracting from the music. If I can get the museum to agree to a festival another time, then it may be appropriate.

This will be my last post to this thread. Look for a new one.
Thank you all for the enthusiastic support.

The ship I sailed in didn't have chains. The leadsman stood on a firm deck just aft of the curve of the bows.

We had one smart ass Bos'ns mate who was heaving the lead, and he thought it was silly because we had depth sounders to do that. He kept heaving the lead and calling out, by the mark 7...by the deep 6 etc. but it got to him and he yelled, "NO bottom at the pink rag" The Officer of the deck yelled, "There's no pink rag on a lead line"!
Bosn's mate yelled back, "There's no F*****g bottom either"!

The date is final. Starting time 9AM on August 2. Set up time 7:30AM and I will buy the coffee.

Roll n Go has generously loaned us a sound system. I am hoping for a second/back up. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Performers:
I will be in contact with each of you to confirm your slot, discuss your music choices and eliminate repetition, although I can't imagine that it will be a real problem.

I am thrilled at the line-up. In no particular order:

Barry Finn (half of Finn & Haddie)
Micca Patterson
Linn Schulz
Tom Hall
Holly, known as Maeve
Jeri Corlew
Castlebay (Fred and Julia)
Marc Bernier
David Jones
Captain Kendall Morse
Gordon Bok
Roll 'n Go
David Coffin
Peter and Joann Sousa plus fellow ADVENTURERs
Glousterman

We will start at 9AM sharp and end with a finale at 3:30. Post festival meal and music at my house for anyone who can make it.

There will be a room at the museum set aside for performers to rest, eat, warm up, cool down, etc. Coffee, breakfast, lunch, beverages will be provided for performers and helpers.

There will be tables for CD sales. I am working on volunteers to organize and man the tables. If you prefer to ship your CDs ahead of time, I will arrange that with you.

There will be a jar passed around to help pay the performers' travel expenses. Admission is free so I expect people will be willing to support us. The money will be divided evenly among the ACTS. A solo performer will get the same as a group.

The Beach to Beacon race which attracts 10,000 spectators, is that morning so I expect a large crowd from about 11 - 2PM. The museum will handle most of the PR but Jacqui and I are planning to do some as well. If you a website, specific info you want included, etc., let us know ASAP.

If parking is going to be an issue, I will have the museum arrange reserved spaces for the performers and a pass of some kind for you to get in.

We have several homes willing to house itinerant musicians. If you are coming from afar, count on a bed and a hot breakfast.

What haven't I covered?

Breakfast - you haven't covered breakfast. I'll have Tom make some of his wonderful sour cream twists (to die for, I promise). If parking is an issue for anyone, our house is within an easy walk of the location --- the street will be packed because of the Beach to Beacon but they can't park on our driveway!!!!! and our driveway is huge.......

By that date my younger daughter will have left home again to move to Louisiana to be with some guy she met on line (best not to ask) so our guest bedroom is available as is a a VERY rough and ready room with a couch and a door (for privacy)...having to get anywhere at that hour in the morning sounds brutal to me so people who want to come up the night before and crash are welcome

There better be coffee!

Let's see, it takes me about 50 minutes to get to the festive site in South Portland, assuming the Casco Bay Bridge is in operation, so I probably should pack the sound equipment into the van the night before, and hop out of bed by 6:30 am. I can do that but I'm not sure Judy can.

Trubrit-

Thanks for the offer but we prefer to start from Richmond. However, the important question is will there be an audience at 9 am for whoever is performing. That's very early to start a special event, I'm thinking. But if we're just performing for ourselves, rather than the general public, that may not be a relevant question.

I'm happy to be a "passenger" on this train and not a "conductor" or "engineer."

Deborah,
I may have a special job for you if you have time on the 2nd. Someone will have to keep an eye on the performers' room both to see that they are properly cared for and to keep out overweaning fans. In addition, if someone simply needs alone time, you can offer yourself as a Gatekeeper and allow them some space.
Watching to see that the food is replenished, tableware is available, some basic housekeeping, etc.
Can you be trusted to behave yourself around Gordon Bok?
