Subject: RE: songs about remembering From: GUEST,Suffolk Miracle Date: 23 Oct 08 - 06:39 AM By the firelight's gentle gleaming I am sitting here and dreaming; It's a pleasure to recall again the days that now are gone. But I find upon reflection that my fondest recollections Are the lilting fiddle music and the dancing in Glenrone (x2) Every jig and reel, I mind them; in my memory I still find them, When I think back to my boyhood and the days beyond recall. Though I'm old and growing dreary, yet my heart will never weary Of the lilting fiddle music and the dancing in Glenrone (x2) You girls, you were the neatest and your dancing was the sweetest, And I'll never find your equal now in the valleys of Tyrone. Us lads were young and steady, and it's always we were ready For the lilting fiddle music and the dancing in Glenrone (x2) As I sit a while and ponder, in my mind I sometimes wonder Why we ever leave such pleasures for a life so cold and lone; And I wish I was returning to begin again life's morning With the lilting fiddle music and the dancing in Glenrone (x2) Though my age is swift advancing, yet I know there'll still be dancing In a cottage by the glenside where my thoughts tonight have flown. So may joy of life betide you - may the hand of Heaven guide you - May I live to see you all againn still dancing in Glenrone (x2) |
Subject: RE: songs about remembering From: GUEST,Ken Brock Date: 23 Oct 08 - 10:57 AM In addition to McCartney's "Yesterday," there's also an older song (from the first half of the 20th C.) titled "Yesterdays." The above had music by Jerome Kern. Eric Bogle - Scraps of Paper Paul Simon - Bookends, Part 2 ("preserve your memories, they're all that's left you" Remember - Nilsson ("Long Ago, Far Away...") The "Gigi" I Remember It Well was actually a rewrite. Alan Jay Lerner wrote a similar song with the same title with Kurt Weill for LOVE LIFE in the late 1940s', available on one of Ben Bagley's Painted Smiles collections. |

Subject: RE: songs about remembering From: oldhippie Date: 30 Oct 08 - 09:05 PM WHEN I'M 64 Jim Terr parody of Paul McCartney Now that I'm older, I still got me hair, But there's still things 'bout which, If I were sufficiently a pessimist, I might still be willing to bitch. Sittin and standin', movin' me bowels, Trying to unlock the damn door. Life is a more static, less automatic, Now that I'm 64. It's only the new 54, that's what they say, But that's a load of bull and it's hard to take. And no doubt when I am 85, I'll know me attitude was a mistake. -But meanwhile… Send me postcard telling me please, Where I left that note Reminding meself where I left the auto keys, And where I put that linament to rub on me knees. If I stay out til eleven or twelve, dial 944. (or is it 991?) Life is more static, less automatic, Now that I'm 64. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GRANDFATHER (Kilkenny Krew) From: oldhippie Date: 30 Oct 08 - 09:26 PM And this one, transcribed from the singing of the Kilkenny Krew: GRANDFATHER Grandfather sits in an old rocking chair And he hums a sad song to the still morning air This old folks prison don't feel much like home And though he's got friends he feels so much alone Chorus: Ah, but Julie comes somedays when she finds the time And she brings homemade bread and some blueberry wine And most of all she brings him hope for awhile And she leaves the old man with a tear and a smile In the old days Grandfather remembers so sweet You should see the old Ford Model T's on the street And the hot roaring twenties were a young man's delight With the straw hat and whiskey and speed kings and dice Chorus Do the folks in the village remember us still Or, are we quickly forgotten when we're over the hill And as Grandfather drifts down the warm sunset years He can scarcely recall all the seasons of tears Chorus Grandfather sits in an old rocking chair And he hums a sad song to the still morning air This old folks prison don't feel much like home And though he's got friends he feels so much alone Chorus |

Subject: RE: songs about remembering From: Barbara Date: 30 Oct 08 - 10:23 PM SHIT I'VE FORGOTTEN THE WORDS (Anon) Chorus: On a packet of fags I'd written them down I threw them away as I drove into town Now I feel a bit of a clown Shit, I've forgotten the words My heart is a-pounding within my breast I know the first line, I forgot all the rest A memory like mine is a hell of a pest Shit, I've forgotten the words The last time I sang them they went down a treat Dogs were howling out on the street I spilt my beer all over my feet 'Cos shit, I've forgotten the words Sometimes they come back line by line as I sing Tonight I can't seem to remember a thing Ian McCalman will know, I'll give him a ring Oh shit, I've forgotten his number So come all you singers, practise your verse If you do not you surely will curse But I remembered the tune, it could have been worse Next time I'll remember the words Tune is the Muckin' of Geordie's Byre, and I have modified this by substituting the name of any friend who can remember a lot of the words (or has notebooks and notebooks of words) and "ATM statement" for "a packet of fags" because on this side of the pond the word "fag" changes meaning. I thought this was Hamish Imlach, but it appears to be attributed to anon on his recording. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: songs about remembering From: GUEST Date: 02 Mar 11 - 05:35 AM Remember the days of the old schoolyard - Cat Stevens; Also, here is a list of good songs about remembering an old love: http://www.bestsongsabout.com/songs-about-memories-of-love/ |
Subject: RE: songs about remembering From: PHJim Date: 02 Mar 11 - 10:00 AM While Tom Rush did cover the Remember Song, Steve Walters wrote it and should get credit. I've noticed this happening a lot. Often when you google lyrics, they're credited to someone who performed them rather than the actual song writer. Todd Snider's song Missing You came into my head the day my brother died: I feel like missing you today. Sometimes I just get this way. Seems like everything I see Brings back another memory. I feel like missing you today. |
