The vicar of Bray
Took a maid for a roll in the hay....

Not that one?

An indolent vicar of bray
Kept his wife in the family way
Till she grew more alert
Bought a vaginal squirt
And said to her spouse, "Let us spray!"

A golden oldie.

I knew it as
In days of old when knights were bold
And paper wasn't invented
They wiped their holes on telegraph poles
And walked away contented

or
The wiped their ass on tufts of grasss
And walked.. ((folk process, I suppose)

Never made the Bray connection
Jim

Interesting, Jim, but not as I knew it:

In days of old when knights were bold
And women weren't invented
They used a hole in a telegraph pole
And went away contented

In the 1970's those of us involved with running the concerts sponsored by the National Maritime Historical Society were expected to be able to sing VOB at the concerts. NMHS was the group trying to bring the remains of the sailing bark Vicar of Bray to the US from the Falklands. She is still down there.
She is that last surviving vessel that was involved in the California run to San Francisco during the gold rush of 1849.

Following the recent election in the Uk and the modern interpretation of identity or not as the case maybe, I couldn't resist writing this verse for the Vicar of Bray.

And now we have another vote, we will face a barrage
Rishi Sunak, Kier Starmer or even Nigel Farrage,
But I don't care whoever wins, I'll still wear Vicars Finery.
and if Vicars are told they cant be men
   I'll declare myself non-Binary
