Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Mar 18 - 06:45 PM Content of the RTE broadcast not available via that link, Peter Laban. I know I have watched stuff from RTE in the past, so is there a way round it? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST Date: 29 Mar 18 - 07:33 PM RTE replay appears now only to be available in The Republic. Maybe a VPN would assist? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 30 Mar 18 - 04:43 AM I have no idea what permissions RTE does or doesn't apply. It works for me but I do note there's an /ie/ in the link (because I reached it from Ireland). You could try go to the player at rte.ie/player and see if you can get it to work from there. It should be there until april 25 th anyway. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 31 Mar 18 - 10:35 AM Curioser and curioser: I have gone direct to the RTE player site, and I can watch anything else on it successfully from here (Scotland, without logging in or anything: however, it does not show, and cannot even find the programme to which you linked, Peter, maybe because it is an archive? I can still get to it via your link, but not play it "owing to your location" - so just wondered where it thinks I am! I tried to find it on YouTube, but no luck there either. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 31 Mar 18 - 10:50 AM If the programme isn't accessible outside Ireland, maybe it doesn't show from the main menu when accessed from abroad? That's possible too ofcourse. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST Date: 31 Mar 18 - 06:03 PM I met him in Chicago. A nicer, kinder gentleman you would scour the world to meet. And piping like well…words fail. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 31 Mar 18 - 06:36 PM Thanks for the suggestions, Peter: tried them all, but that programme remains invisible, even after signing up for an account with RTE!! Just isn't meant to be, unfortunately. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,bigJ Date: 02 Apr 18 - 03:00 PM Before this subject drops off the page I'd like to express my thanks to Peter Laban in particular for keeping us up-to-date on this sad topic. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 02 Apr 18 - 03:38 PM No trouble at all, you're welcome. I was going to let this drop now but the thread is back on top: Obit in NY Times |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 02 Apr 18 - 07:46 PM just to lighten the atmosphere a little: thanks to whoever put online a recent interview with Martin Carthy, who recalled the shock of his first encounter with Seamus Ennis. Carthy walked into the premises where Ennis was making music and holding forth. It was Carthy's first encounter with uillean pipes: "like wrestling an octopus!" |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 03 Apr 18 - 06:04 AM Still more coming up all the time: Planxty : No Disco On the TG4 player. While you're there, do yourself a favour and watch 'Joe Heaney : Songs of Granite' while it's up there. Monumental piece of work. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 03 Apr 18 - 07:34 AM Thanks for the heads up on the Planxty film ... great to see it ... Songs of Granite next! Derek |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: StephenH Date: 03 Apr 18 - 06:00 PM Yes, thanks very much, Peter Laban. Really enjoyed the Planxty film. There's a nice moment at about 20mins in where Donal Lunny and Andy Irvine look on with affection and admiration as Liam Og O'Flynn plays a solo piece. I was surprised by the Phil Coulter/Shanachie business - but then I'm most familiar with the Planxty era spanning the first three albums. "Songs of Granite" next for me too. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 03 May 19 - 06:34 AM RTE has just announced a new series of 'Cloch le Carn', a series that celebrates the lives of (more or less) recently deceased public figures. Nest weeks episode is dedicated to the life of writer Emma Hannigan, one of the following episodes will focus on Liam O Flynn. One to look out for, I'll bring back up this thread with a link once the program is put on the RTE player. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: Tony Rees Date: 14 May 19 - 06:12 PM He was a featured artist on Shaun Davey's "Granuaile", featuring Rita Connolly, of which I have a video tape of the Greenwich (London) concert performance broadcast on the BBC (not sure how to share it, though). More details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granuaile_(album) An interesting and at least partly successful blend of classical and folk music elements, in my opinion at least... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Liam Óg Ó' Flynn (1945-2018) From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 14 May 20 - 10:04 AM I somehow thought of this thread: RTE recently did a lovely appreciation of the piper. At the time of posting there are only a few days left online but it is a good watch for your lockdown time: Liam O'Flynn : Píobaire |
