I LIKE acapella singing. It's what I was raised with and a lot of the old ballads just don't sound right with accompanyment.

Now mbo, don't pick on bass players. I just got one, and they're a lot of fun, especially if you play 'em like a guitar! I think it adds a lot to even informal jamming. Of course, it is different playing on strings a quarter inch in diameter. I like Maj 7ths on the bass. Sometimes it keeps me from stretching so FAR. My main argument against playing bass is that it either eats alot of picks, or else it eats a lot of fingers.

BlueJay*** Try putting a little superglue on the spots on your fingers where the blisters appear before you play. It works.

Mbo*** don't knock un-accompanied singing. Instrumentation is all well and good, but when you hear a beautiful song butchered because some guitar played put in every chord voicing he could think of, you'll see what I mean.

And remember, The Chordwaster can return at any time!!!

Troll, I like a capella too! Music with accompaniment is beautiful, too, but I'm a big fan of tight harmonies and no instruments, too. Being a person who can only do major and minor guitar chords and a Dsus4, though, it's probably just jealousy talking. : )

Methinks I was making myself seem unfair! Bluej--I absolutely LOVE bass guitars--music would be lost without them, and their players. If I actually had the money to spend, I'd buy one. I use an old classical guitar with slacked up strings to play fake bass guitar on. It's kinda grungy and funky at the same time, seeing as the strings are 3 years old and completely oxidized. And Troll--there ain't a bloody thing wrong with the acappella. Since I'm at school most of the day with NO access to a guitar, all my singing in the mall, hallways, classrooms, restrooms, and woodshops is all acappella. That's how I've learned to sing in tune without musical accompaniament! And I am by no means a gratuitous chord-adder...a just like to put in some stuff that gives me a fuller sound without having an accompaniast, like adding bass notes to the chords, and strumming drum rhythms. Check out my "The First Thing" at the Mudcat Songbook! Weeee those D and Em7 chord changes at the speed it supposed to be played is a riot!!! Everything in moderation, give it full consideration.
