Cool, Paul. I just saw that page and thought it may be a "Mudcatter" when I saw Folk Legacy name. I was looking in the Celtic genre at the new songs uploaded today, and yours were the newest. I'll add you to the station. (a little hint, the yellow type font is hard to read). See the Kitty of Coleraine thread - they finally approved the song to my page.

Just want to say Good Job! to Clansfolk, too. At age 18, you are well on your way to developing a nice traditional band. Let me know when you have more files recorded. Don't be shy about the home-made sound, all I have is a cheap mic connected to the computer in my living room - when I record I have to deal with barking dogs, ringing phones, and the sound of the furnace starting up!

Alice, before you start recording, you're supposed to turn off the furnace. Then you sing till you're done or your toes turn blue, then you turn the furnace on again...

I went through this very rigorous procedure with the recording of "The long walk home" and a couple of other tunes on my site--We were using fancy digital equipment in the producer's house, in January, and it was just part of the routine to get clean tracks. Course that guy was a fanatic. Because the previous commercial recording he'd made there, in summer, windows had been open, and the recording was released complete with traffic noises.

Ditto for the phone, as for the dog, well I've been there. Another time recording at my house, my old dog was being exceedingly mellow and relaxed as we were recording in an upstairs bedroom; in the middle of the song he quietly ambled upstairs, walked into the room and contentedly flopped down; quietly except for the extremely loud clattering of claws on the plywood floor. We too collapsed but in uncontrolled laughter. Wish we'd saved that take.

Stay warm,
Willie-O

LOL! Bill, my dog was jingling dog tags and clicking toenails across the hardwood floor yesterday when I started recording. He was sleeping very contentedly until I turned on the mic. I've learned to unplug the phone. Actually, the refrigerator and furnace hum doesn't seem to be detected by my microphone - or else my speakers are so bad I just can't hear the background noise!

By the way, my newest project on mp3 last night was to create a storytelling page. I'm doing children's stories I have written (mostly for toddlers) and re-telling old folk tales, with a little singing included in the stories.

You can have more than one site, just signing up as a new artist each time with a different "band name". For those of you who do comedy, poetry, stories, etc., look under the genre called Spoken Voice. You can create mp3's of your own work and read/recite work that is public domain.

Jon, I'm afraid to go there!

Harpgirl, my experience with using RealJuke to make MP3's for mp3.com was not successful -- it encodes them at the wrong bitrate for MP3.com which does not accept them. (they need to be set at 128 / 44 mhz / stereo.) They are working mp3's but not usable by mp3.com/ Maybe you can change those settings, I just used another mp3 encoding program that uses the mp3.com requirement settings as the default. (I use bladeenc, elegantly simple it is.)

Alice, you are definitely hooked on this aren't you? Good work you're doing too.

p.s. now I have a different dog, going to have to train her all over again in home recording protocol. woof.

There's nothing to scary about Whorticulture. It's just a silly name. My cousin's fault, really. He thought it was funny. If you prefer, you can get the songs via :

Although that still re-directs you to

hope I haven't upset anyone. It didn't occur to me.

Waters Wide is a collection of contemporary settings of traditional ballads and some original material. Folks seem to like my rendition of "If I Was a Blackbird" and if you like the King Authur legends, please check out "Guinevere's Lament". I would appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks! I changed the url for my page, it is now www.mp3.com/chagall

I am getting increasingly frustrated with mp3.com's lack of good customer service and caring, and I would recommend other bands who are starting out in the digital music world to put their music up at iuma, or musicbuilder. Maybe put up a couple of tracks on mp3.com, so that you can be featured on stations, but don't make it your main focus. They introduced a "Premium Artist Service" or PAS, where if you want to get paid per play by them, you have to first pay them $20 per month. They are still listing the "amount earned" right on the page of non-PAS artists, even though those artists are NOT earning anything from them. It is extremely misleading.

I will gradually be moving my stuff elsewhere, after a succesion of responses to my letters that were full of propaganda, and did not even answer my questions or concerns...

Good Luck!

There is an easy to use stats engine created by Allan Handelman that mp3.com artists can go to for checking downloads, complete plays and partial plays. It is easier than logging into the artist admin area at mp3.com. You can check stats using the band ID number on your calendar URL. stats engine page

hespy is dead on. I don't bother to correspond with mp3.com since I have no taste for reading propaganda.

That said, I still have my mp3 page up. and have been adding some stuff from my archives. Mostly old 4-track recordings I made with my friend Becca in the late 80's, we're going to make them available as a CD soon. "Do You Love An Apple", "Lovely On THe Water" and some Archie Fisher and instrumentals.

That's the latest...

Hesperis or other oracle. Is there anything to stop artists from putting the same tracks on different sites, do you know?

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com
From: hesperis

As long as the other artist is owned by the same admin, there is no problem putting your tracks up on different artist pages.

But if you work with someone else to produce a song, and both want to put it up on both artists' pages, then you would have to write to coversongs@mp3.com before even uploading the track, and be prepared to fax written permission to them. Also, be prepared for them to lose the info... so keep it handy to resend it.

That's as far as I know.

Hello all, I've just set up a page on mp3.com amid unrest and unease wiv der management. I hope I've done the right thing, but if not, hopefully not too much harm done. I was going to say, they're only songs, but that's not true. They may be only songs to some people but they're all the world to us!!!

The band name is Mad Rush and we've got songs there about Anne Boleyn (not the one with her head underneath her arm - shame)a rousing chorus song, Soldiers of Britain, and a couple of trad tracks, a new spine-tingling arrangement of the Trees They Do Grow High and the beautiful and haunting Peninsular War song, Lisbon.

Hope some of you have time for a listen.

Cheers Deni
