Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: vectis Date: 16 Aug 04 - 07:46 AM My husband and I are leaving tomorrow should be out and about on Thursday. Where will people be on Thursday evening? Will there be any sessions/sings on? In which pubs? Can't wait to get some REAL kippers again. Mary |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST Date: 16 Aug 04 - 08:20 AM Raggytash - I'm into English Trad, mainly. Anywhere you could suggest? |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: muppett Date: 16 Aug 04 - 08:33 AM By eck, I'll have to learn to type better, my last attempt should have said; 'I'm sure Early will do a better job' |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 16 Aug 04 - 10:47 AM Mupppett - you type like you sing - a good laugh trying to work out what you mean! |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: muppett Date: 16 Aug 04 - 11:00 AM Cheers Red & White Rabbit, you ought to see the report I'm writing at work at the moment. |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 16 Aug 04 - 11:09 AM The singaround upstairs at the Plough is often in this vein, I'm possibly not the best person to ask as it is not a genre I follow, come on boys and girls let's help the Guest and show what nice people we are underneath when we've stopped biting |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Observer Date: 16 Aug 04 - 02:13 PM I think you are probably right Raggytash, however I don't know that there are any specific English Trad only venues. Of course as you know Mr Tash some singers in the tap and spile sing some English Trad of course there's the little sessions in The Endeavour which contain some English Trad and some of the maritme songs in the appropriate sessions are also English Trad. So bottom line is most of the singarounds would contain some but not solely. |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Tyke Date: 16 Aug 04 - 02:40 PM Coblers Monday Whitby's Sea Shanty Group will be once again running the singer round in the Fleece Lunch Time every day during Folk Week. All welcome! There will be a collection's towards the cost of the Folk Week as this is a regular Festival Venue. There have been problems I believe at the Black Horse due to the Blue Meanies and the new Music Licensing Laws. The Endeavour will host the Jim Magean Shanty Sessions. The Plough will be packed out during Folk Week as usual. As the Jolly Sailors and the Plough are both Sam Smiths Pub's! I can't see the Jolly Sailors wanting to miss out I think they are both managed Houses. Look for the usual Folkies Made Welcome signs. Last but not least is the Tap n Spile I sure that there will be a bit of singing in there every day and Night. |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Herga Kitty Date: 16 Aug 04 - 03:22 PM I'd just like to point out that Jim Mageean's singarounds have a maritime flavour, but aren't just shanties, except on Wednesday, when it's shanties and bad shirts day! Unlike the Fleece, which will probably have bad shirts every day? Love Kitty |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Mrs.Duck Date: 16 Aug 04 - 05:25 PM Vectis most people will be arriving from Saturday but some may be about on Thursday so I would check the Endeavour as a good starting point. |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Abuwood Date: 17 Aug 04 - 03:24 AM You will usually find us in the Endeavor at lunchtimes- Steve loves the Broadside. We arrive Monday as we have a morris and church commitment at Burntwood. Looking forward to seeing you all.. Ali |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 17 Aug 04 - 03:35 AM From my pub crawl experience of Whitby - I mean my visits to singarounds - none of them do 'traditional English' all do a mixture and everyone is welcome. You might find more traditional stuff at Jo and Mo's singaround in the Plough of an evening b ut it wont be exclusively traditional - Endeavour is certainly a great mix of music of an evening- thats if you can get in! Similiarly with Tap and Spile and Plough Cant say about the Black Horse - never managed to get there at night! Sorry guest cant be any more help |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,red max Date: 17 Aug 04 - 04:20 AM Thanks for the tips. Of course it'd be unreasonable to expect a purely English trad session. It's just that I've been to a few clubs where you get nothing but self-penned or Scots/Irish stuff. Nothing WRONG with that, I know! |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: spikeis Date: 17 Aug 04 - 06:49 AM Hey Muppet, YOU DRUNK OUT OF CONTROL AT A FOLK FEST..............................SURELY NOT!!!! And yes the landlord (Hi Andy)and landlady of the Jolly Sailors are VERY folkie friendly and has been for the last few years. AND NOW THE PLUG!!! TO SEE HOW FRIENDLY, COME TO THE JOLLY SAILORS ANY NIGHT DURING FOLK WEEK, WHERE THERE IS A FANTABULOUS SESSION RUN BY EARLY AND MYSELF, WHERE EVERYONE BE THEY SINGERS MUSICIAN OR EVEN MUPPET IS WELCOME!! See you all there!! cheers Spike |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: muppett Date: 17 Aug 04 - 07:21 AM I'll be there then Spike. |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Tyke Date: 17 Aug 04 - 12:54 PM If I wasn't booked with Coblers Monday to run the Fleece Session Kitty I would as you have pointed out. Be a sure fire winner in the bad taste shirt competition. Should I enter it, for in the past, I have always let the amateur's Bad Taste Shirt wearers have a chance of winning by not doing so. That said I will have a word with Mick Haywood and the rest of Coblers Monday to see if we can't organise a rival Bad Taste Underwear Competition in the Fleece Session and a Holy Sock Competition to be held on Sunday Lunchtime session naturally. Love George |

Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: muppett Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:15 AM What about a shorts competition George |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Sttaw Legend Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:23 AM SHORTS competition - doubles or singles? |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:30 AM Red Max ......... I'm sitting here with the 2004 programme, the first session I've come across that would fit your requirements is called "The English Tradition" it is in the Rifle Club on Sunday 1.00 till 2.45 with Ian Russell, Jim Causley, Will duke & Dan Quin, Tony Hall Fay Hield, Bob Lewis, Will Noble & John Cocking, John Waltham, Jeff Wesley and George Withers Thats about one song each I reckon !! |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: bumstump Date: 18 Aug 04 - 05:10 AM None of you are getting within a mile of my J160E, play in a day, pop guitar |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 18 Aug 04 - 06:03 AM Red Max ..... Wednesday, again at the Rifle Club 1.15 to 2.30 "To be a Farmers Boy" sounds like it might fit your bill Cheers Raggy |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:09 AM Will the nobody can come in unless we know you singaround be taking place in the Tap & Spile front room this year? |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Mrs.Duck Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:41 AM The front room at the Tap and Spile gets VERY full but noone is excluded. However on the last evening (ie Friday) there are restrictions placed by the land lady and the front room is often a semi private party. |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 18 Aug 04 - 08:56 AM Everyone who wishes to brave the crush and heat in the front room of the tap gets to sing cos Lady A,Padge MCFAT and anyone else who might be trying to control the rabble make sure they do but if you want to get in you have to be patient its a good sing so gets very full - when the landlady puts restrictions on its usually because the c`rush in the room has got to such a state that you physically cant squeeze another body in whatever night it is! |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: early Date: 18 Aug 04 - 12:50 PM hi again our sing at the Jolly sailors is so popular that some guest singers have even included it on their gig list on the web: in years gone by we have aimed to be inclusive and a variety os playing and singing styles have ensured that there is always something different to listen to from trad through to bluegrass and country so get yourselves along each night after 8 pm where we look forward to meeting up with old friends and new cheers M |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: wigan Date: 18 Aug 04 - 02:34 PM if there is a shorts comp, then muppet will win it hands down. it takes guts to wear vest, shorts and hiking boots with short socks |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: wigan Date: 18 Aug 04 - 02:36 PM where is the jolly sailor? t'only one i know is on the moors road. too far out for whitby fest.,surely? |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: LesB Date: 18 Aug 04 - 02:40 PM Is anything happening this Fri night? Les |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: early Date: 18 Aug 04 - 02:43 PM the jolly sailors is on St.Annes Staith ( on the west side of the harbour just passed Woolworths) about 100 yds from the swing bridge Landlord and landlady are Andy and Jackie - it's a Sam Smiths pub with beer about £1.30 a pint - as good a reason as any for trying it out. ( same beer as the Plough ) |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Mrs.Duck Date: 18 Aug 04 - 02:46 PM Right down near the Harbour Wigan right in the centre of things. Ooo I'm getting excited - even walked into town today to start getting ready for them hills!!!! |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 18 Aug 04 - 05:22 PM MCFAT will be around Friday night - if he pays the taxi fee and survives the journey over with my kids - no doubt he will at some point be in the T&S probably via the Endeavour, Black Horse, and the bookies- as for me not sure when I will be out but probably at some point Friday night I will be in one of those establishments |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Tyke Date: 18 Aug 04 - 06:13 PM Great Idea Muppet!! Mine's a large one! Cheers |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Herga Kitty Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:38 PM Les There was singing in the Tap & Spile on Friday last year (I think that's because I started it), so there might be this year. Tyke - Bad taste underwear in the Fleece???? (OK, must remember to take all my washing home from Whitby this year....) Kitty |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: spikeis Date: 19 Aug 04 - 05:27 PM HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I'm off to Whitby tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Steve Parkes Date: 20 Aug 04 - 03:36 AM We'll be travelling up Saturday. We're staying at Staintondale; don't know if we'll make it into town before Sunday. No room to carry guitars or anything: I'll be unac. Steve |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 20 Aug 04 - 04:10 AM Spikeis Wombat and I are meeting up tonight with Ossenflags probably in the Endeavour and I suspect several other muso's will be there |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,red max Date: 20 Aug 04 - 05:11 AM Raggytash, thanks very much for your suggestions. I got the programme earlier this week and the exact two events you mention almost leapt off the page. Those and a few evenings at the Plough and the Spinal Tap (well, that's what we call the Harrogate Tap and Spile) should do me all right |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 20 Aug 04 - 05:29 AM Another that might suit you is on Sunday at 10 in the Con club - Farming for the Four Seasons |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Terry K Date: 20 Aug 04 - 05:39 AM I'm still trying to buy a season ticket but the festival office phone doesn't answer. I have emailed to the website - anyone know any other way I can contact the organisers? cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 20 Aug 04 - 05:45 AM The number in the programme is 01757 708424 but I suspect this is in Selby and everyone will already be in Whitby, the festval office opens tomorrow at 11.30 at West Cliff school, probably your best bet now |

Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Lady A Date: 20 Aug 04 - 06:35 AM Nice to read all the threads but have to tell you that Whitby's very wet & windy today. Re: tonight. As Kitty said, usually is pre-session sing in the Tap (but there will also be a 'turn' on in the main room (probably not folky). Looks like there's no point in having a bad shirt comp in the Tap then as they'll all be gone from the charity shops...better think of something else that's in equally good taste as the Sooty & sweet show! See you all soon Jude |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 20 Aug 04 - 07:21 AM Lady A What news of music in the Sooty Donkey |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: Geoff the Duck Date: 20 Aug 04 - 08:03 AM Bad taste underwear in the Fleece... Better than bad tasting fleas in your underwear!! See you all tomorrow or thereabouts... Quack! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: GUEST,Lady A Date: 20 Aug 04 - 08:40 AM Which sooty donkey would that be??? |
Subject: RE: WHITBY !! From: HRH ted of hull Date: 20 Aug 04 - 08:51 AM 100. i thank you! |
