Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Balsto da Loteya Date: 02 Apr 07 - 12:32 PM People are mistaken here it is not the mountain cod that the men in the mountains use for matters of honour. The mountain cod are very rare(I think maybe extinct), it is the orinary cod of the sea I am here describing. At the castles and monasteries they often have big ponds, and the peasants used to carry up live cod and sea water on the donkeys. This means there is always fresh fish for the monks and lords. If people wish to remove unwanted GUEST or similar nuisances, the mens take them, strip them and bind them, and throw them in the pool. A hungry 20 kilo cod can be a big eater of the bits of a man. When people first did this(I think back in the time of removing the Moors) the fish did not like the taste of people, so they are always smeared all over with a paste made from anchovies before they are thrown in the pond. This is still done, though the government in Lisboa try to stop it. |

Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Balsto da Loteya Date: 02 Apr 07 - 05:27 PM My good new friends, it is very kind of you to speak to me in Portugese, but I have big reason to come here, which is the learning English. Rock Chick, you have lovely name, and speak really good. Peace and John McKenzie, not quite so good. And let me tell you sir John, filho da puta is not a thing to say in the best houses. Men have been thrown to the cods for less. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Apr 07 - 05:31 PM I know someone with a fairly recent CD, who spoke about spending time in Portugal, I wonder if you have run into him, he might be a writer of comic opera? Giok |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST,J. Date: 02 Apr 07 - 05:35 PM Welcome, I envy you living in 'Viana do Castelo', one of the most beautiful places in Portugal, as well as Europe. I remember visiting there when I was 13; we staed in a beuatiful castle / hotel on a mountain top that overlooked the mountains on one side, and the Atlantic on another. What memories ! Someday I hope to return to Portugal, a truely wonderful country. J. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Balsto da Loteya Date: 03 Apr 07 - 03:50 AM Ah, you lucky to have such memories. To taste the smoked salty cod pieces when young, that is heaven. You remember any music? Was this long time ago? There were very many fado singers then, the special Potugese music when the ladies howl and wail very miserably for long long time. That is the true beauty in Viana. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: John MacKenzie Date: 03 Apr 07 - 03:55 AM Amalia, Mariza, amazing. Howl and wail, you are talking RUBBISH I say, it is beautiful, the English just don't understand saudade. G. |

Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: greg stephens Date: 04 Apr 07 - 09:42 AM Balsto: a big welcome to Mudcat. Don't mind these people laughing at you, you are welcome here. Your views on fado are interesting, and we should hear more of your thoughts. How would you define "folk music", for example? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Georgiansilver Date: 04 Apr 07 - 05:37 PM How is your cousin Balsto Yutu? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Balsto da Loteya Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:07 PM So, you think you a funny woman, Mrs Silver? What kind of name you think Yutu is? You saying I have the cousin from Africa? You pull the other one off, as my mother would say, God rest her soul. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST,AWG Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:08 PM Just wondering, how come Celtic (as in Celtic music) is pronounced 'Keltick', and The Celtics (Boston Basketball Team) is pronounced 'Selticks' ?? Any takers ?? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:11 PM Jeeze! I don't know AWG. You think the new member does? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Balsto da Loteya Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:12 PM How you pronounce your name, Mr AWG? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:16 PM Ogg! |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:18 PM AWG. If you look up, way up, there's a "Create a New Thread" link. Jump in there and ask. You'll be made more welcome than the new member, I'm sure. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST,AWG Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:19 PM Its easy to pronounce, just like its spelled. :) By the way, greetings to all, too many threads to read, but was someone making fun of someones name or something ? Who is the 'new member' ? Can anyone answer the Basketball Question, (assuming you heard of the Boston Celtics)? Boy, so many questions, so little time. By the way, Jim, you get around don't you? Did you buy the 'A New Journey' DVD yet ?? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:24 PM Well ... "Yes" .... I do get around ..... Is that you, Mammy? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:27 PM Seriously though. Follow my directions to ask the "Celtic" question and those who have the answers for you will see it and respond. They won't know you're asking, otherwise. A New Journey DVD? Refresh my memory please. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:36 PM And don't mind Ballsto. He's really the dog's bollocks. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:37 PM Hey Jim, refreshing your memory...A New Journey, the new Celtic Woman DVD. P.S. I followed your link to a thread about Celtic Woman on PBS. (on the thread about Send Me A Song). Boy, about 90% of those people posting have literally no taste in music. Honestly, I couldn't believe some of the comments, what %$#@#$ing crap. I hope not all threads contain such meat-head like posts. By the way, my goal in life is to convince everyone of the greatness of Celtic Woman. They Rock !!! |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:38 PM Sorry Jim, the Send Me A Song thread link was by PoppaGator, I think, but you posted right before them. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:42 PM My submission got lost in the shuffle there. Never mind. It's all been said. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jim Lad Date: 04 Apr 07 - 06:45 PM Sorry Guys. Carry on with your thread. I'll take him out of here. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Balsto da Loteya Date: 05 Apr 07 - 07:04 AM I think this Mr AWG maybe thinks about this Celtic Woman too much. My mother, God rest her soul, she always said, you think about a woman too much, some bits get hard buit the brain gets soft. |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST,AWG Date: 05 Apr 07 - 04:44 PM LOL, nicely put Mr Balsto, I think you could be right. But hey, beats thinking about anything else! (Except maybe the hockey playoffs coming up). Go Leafs !! |

Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Jeri Date: 05 Apr 07 - 08:49 PM Ah yes - did Portugal make the playoffs this year? |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Mr Happy Date: 05 Apr 07 - 08:50 PM Go Leafs? Sorry, I understand now: Go = leave Leaf [plural] = leaves Therefore, Leave = Go & Leaves = Goes Therefore, Go Leafs = Go- Go's!! |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST,AWG Date: 05 Apr 07 - 09:01 PM Ill assume you are serious and not kidding with me. The Leafs are the NHL hockey team here in Toronto, and they need to win probably at least one of their next 2 games to make the playoffs. Actually, Im not really a Leaf Fan, just that everyone around here says 'go Leafs'. Go figure. LOL |

Subject: RE: MOAB - Mother of All BS [annex] From: noodles_incident Date: 16 Jan 21 - 08:07 PM Hi all! I just joined and figured I'd introduce myself, though the only introduction thread I could find was last used in 2009, so for lack of a better place... You can call me Allen or Noodles, I'm fairly new to the folk scene (been listening to and enjoying the music since I was a little grub, but just recently making forays into the wider community) -- I figured I spent enough time on here digging up lyrics and song origins and suchlike that it'd be worth making an account and talking to all you cool folks! I'm most into union songs & work songs, and the intersections of labor/protest history and music history, as well as songs about historical events (even heavily fictionalized ones). I've also lived in Seattle my whole life and go ham for anything dealing with boats and the sea. Really excited to be here! |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Jan 21 - 01:10 PM Noodles, I moved your post from the Mother of All BS (Annex) to the music section and a different existing thread where other members will actually see your introductory post. Enjoy spending time lurking to see what threads are active now and what threads are on topics that interest you that can be revived (they'll be linked in the tops of existing music threads or found via the search bar at the top of the main Mudcat page.). Welcome to Mudcat! |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: GUEST,The Sandman Date: 17 Jan 21 - 01:18 PM Welcome noodles, may your enjoy noodling and may your cup runneth over ,My advice would be do not go below the line, many of the dIscussions on political subjects ,particularly by british contributors, get nowHere and one EVEN ended up with people abusing others, calling them arseholes, etc. The music section imo is a better place to spend time |
Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 17 Jan 21 - 06:28 PM welcome, noodles I've found the best way to search mudcat is to do a google site search - union songs site:mudcat.org, that way I can skim down & find the thread/s I want. A great source of Australian union songs is occasional Mudcatter Mark Gregory's Union Songs He also includes songs from other countries, world-wide links - Union Music and Cultural Sites - as Mark's site started in the 90s (like Mudcat) some of these could be dead. |

Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please From: BrooklynJay Date: 17 Jan 21 - 11:41 PM Welcome Noodles! Mudcat is an amazing resource, and I hope you will find yourself enriched, informed and broadened by it as I have been. My two cents - I will echo The Sandman and say avoid the contentious stuff. As far as knowledge of music, lyrics, and the like, Mudcat folks can be very giving and generous. Jay |
