Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Genie Date: 08 Jul 04 - 09:04 PM Big Mick recently sort of encouraged me come to this year's Getaway (after I told him how much I enjoy his Follow Me Up To Carlow/The Swallowtail on the Mudcat Blue Place Special) ;-D and it looks like it fits my schedule. Having volunteered to be "bumped" on a recent flight, I now have a free ticket that I can use to get to DC or thereabouts (anywhere Alaska or American Airlines fly). So I'm seriously considering it. I'd love to get to meet you 'catters from remote places! I just started reading this thread, so now I'll go catch up. What I need to find is more stuff about where to stay, carpooling or public transportation, and what the heck goes on (officially, at least) ;-) at the Gathering. Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 08 Jul 04 - 10:10 PM Charlie Baum posts the registration forms later in the Summer...(this camp has plenty of room, so no one need panic about getting in....but those who have a distance to travel should consider plane reservations based on the dates, times & ideas already posted. We can usually scare up rides from local airports...and BWI, as noted, is by FAR the closest. Hope to see all those who are thinking about it! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Nancy King Date: 08 Jul 04 - 10:14 PM Hi Genie, glad you can make it! Hopefully your free airline ticket will allow you to fly into BWI (Baltimore-Washington Intl.), which is definitely the closest airport to the camp. As we get closer to the event, let folks know what time you'll be arriving, and someone will be able to pick you up. If it has to be some other airport, we can probably still help, especially if your arrival time is fairly early. Accommodations at the Getaway are in group cabins, unheated but with real mattresses and indoor plumbing. You'll need to bring a sleeping bag or some other bedding (though if that's a problem we can usually arrange a loan) and warm clothes, as it gets fairly nippy in mid- to late October. The event and the camp are described pretty well here, and as for the spirit of the thing, see Ferrara's post of 09 Mar., 12:46 a.m. (she's a night person...) in this thread. I've been coming to the Getaway for the last 30 years or so, and ALWAYS have a grand time. My kids have been coming since they were very small, and now that they're grown up they still try to make it whenever they can. In recent years we've had more and more Mudcatters join us, and they've made it even better! Looking forward to meeting you! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Jul 04 - 11:43 PM I'm a definite CAN'T again this year. Workshop, Bishop visit, then west for #1 son's wedding. All of which I most definitely DO want to do. Someday! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Genie Date: 09 Jul 04 - 04:12 AM Thanks, Nancy! I'll check to see if Baltimore's an option. Shouldn't be a problem to bring bedding. Thanks for the link. Ferrara, you're not the only night owl, y'know. ;-) It'll be great to meet youse guys! (See? I'm already talking like it's a done deal.) LOL (Only thing is -- I hate to be a downer -- my dear sis is in critical condition. It has been touch and go for months now. I very well may need to use my free ticket to go be with her in Santa Rosa, if and when she's up to having visitors. Naturally, I hope she will pull through, and I hope I will be able to make the gathering this year. If for any reason I can't, I hope y'all have a great music gathering. I'm getting the hang of this "getting bumped" thingy with the airlines, so if I don't make this year, maybe I'll have another free ticket next year.) Genie |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 14 Aug 04 - 07:28 PM I'm putting off the operation until after the Getaway. Sinsull has asked me to be in on her workshop on Hank Williams. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 14 Aug 04 - 08:22 PM Ooh - sounds like a good workshop! You're gonna kick yourself if you have that surgery and 4 weeks later are singing like Jenny Lind! (And you're probably gonna want to sue the surgeon to get your nuts back.) Beardedbruce, I'm not sure the first night is good for that. Singing usually happens in the TV room, and lots of people are somewhat 'scattered', catching up with folks, and unwinding. (I'm manic for the first couple of hours after I get out of the car.) Plus, I might get there late and all the ginger, PB cups, tiramasu and cheese cake will be gone! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: SINSULL Date: 14 Aug 04 - 09:06 PM Friday night - pot luck supper, pass any available bottle, get settled into a bed, hugs all around, buttons, more hugs, "oh my god it's_____ and more hugs... Cheesecake and tiramisu don't travel well but I can supply any amount of bourbon balls. I have a second interview next week and have to negotiate time off in October or pass up the job. And I used to be so responsible...and financially soluble. Oh well. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Aug 04 - 09:07 PM Friday nite is sorta "make it up as you go" night, depending on who arrives when...we will try to have that bulletin board in the dining hall for announcements...-or you can just stand up and yell to collect folks for special events..*grin* Dani..Rita is out of town until about Tuesday...detailed planning of workshops will start then..(as you see, a few have been percolating behind the scenes all summer)...I was convinced it was all magic until Rita took it on a few years ago, and now I know better. LOTS of emails and phone calls and post on Mudcat go into it...but if we know exactly WHO is coming and their wishes, suggestions, offers...etc., it makes sorting it all out a bit easier. It's rough having so many talents and ideas available that we can't possibly do them all...*grin*... Toss in suggestions on this thread for a few days, I guess...but I will wait until Rita is home and let HER tell you how to contact her directly... (PMs to Bill D or Ferrara will obviously be one way) Bill, the support staff and hauler of big stuff |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 15 Aug 04 - 06:00 AM Jeri: I would save you some... But I do get the point. Have to work it into the schedule with Rita. SINSULL: Bourbon balls? ANY number? Sold! Bring as many as you can carry! (or roll) :) 8-{E |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 18 Aug 04 - 06:22 AM My registration will be posted later today. I am SO looking forward to this chance to meet some of the N.America-based Catters! Alaska Mike, are you up for some song-swapping? a) BEGGING LIFTS : I'll be landing (BWI) at 16:15 on Friday - so should be out of the airport by 17:30 I guess - and also need to be at BWI by 18:00 on Sunday for the return flight b) CAN ANYONE LEND A 12-string for the weekend? Otherwise I will be bringing my Yamaha. Never tried bringing an instrument on long-haul before, I confess to some trepidation about it. Other than that - roll on October! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 18 Aug 04 - 11:03 AM Hey George, I can't wait to swap some songs with you. Its a shame that you have to leave Sunday night before its over, but we'll just have to make the best of the time we are there. *TRAVEL UPDATE: I have found a Greyhound bus that delivers me to Aberdeen, Maryland at about 4:30 pm on October 15th. This is 12 miles or so from Ramblewood to the south. Does anyone know of a shuttle bus or kind soul who could help me cover the last 12 miles? *MAJOR THANKS to Big Mick for helping me get from the Getaway to Michigan afterwards. And thanks to the many others who offered their help. See you all in a couple months. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 18 Aug 04 - 12:34 PM El Greco (and Alaska Mike)..I am usually AT the camp by that time, but we will keep the thread alive and confer with locals.....we almost always find rides, especially when they are convenient, like from BWI or Aberdeen!...Lits of folks will be puttering up that way during those times. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: SINSULL Date: 18 Aug 04 - 01:16 PM It looks as if I will be flying in as well. I will post the time when I have it. El Greko - landing 3:15 on Friday and leaving 6PM Sunday? Kendall may be bringing his 12-string. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 18 Aug 04 - 03:25 PM I will bring my 12 ElGreko and you are welcome to use it. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 19 Aug 04 - 01:58 PM Kendall, You are a gentleman and a scholar, Sir! Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 19 Aug 04 - 07:40 PM Fair warning, you may want to keep it! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 20 Aug 04 - 04:58 AM I don't think my better one-third would let me, with 9 guitars in the house already... She's unreasonable like that. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Midchuck Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:14 AM The reservation for myself and Kris for all three nights went out this morning. We had to wait to find out if Kris could get Monday and Friday off. As Getaway Virgins, we'll need help deciding what to bring and what not to. I assume a warm sleeping bag (not a problem for Vermonters) and a couple of instruments - one good and one not so good. Clothes - do we need anything beyond jeans and sweatshirts; or shorts and tee shirts if we get lucky on weather? Does the camp have an alcohol policy - negative, positive, or laizzez-faire? P. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:26 AM Bring warm clothes. It gets mighty chilly at night. Warm bedding, no heat in the rooms. Don't worry about booze unless you plan to drive. Instruments are left lying around at all hours so bring your best. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:31 AM Hi Peter & Kris I'm really looking forward to seeing you both again. Can't get enough of those limericks! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,Big Mick in Toronto Date: 23 Aug 04 - 11:00 AM I am starting to get very excited about this one. It is shaping up to be an even more wonderful gathering than the usual spectacular. Rita, I assume it was you that called. The answer is an emphatic YES that I will be there. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 23 Aug 04 - 11:24 AM we are fortunate that at this camp, we don't have to to be coy about alcohol as we did in former years. Be reasonable, but enjoy your favorite libation. (There were some amazing stories about beer runs told by the Shellbacks and their guides last year..*grin*). (yeah, Mick, that was Rita..good to know you'll be back) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,Big Mick Date: 23 Aug 04 - 11:31 AM Yep, Bill, wouldn't miss it for the world. I will be in touch when I am back from Toronto. BTW, I will be on "Acoustic Workshop" tonight with Heather. Hope some 'Catters will listen in. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 23 Aug 04 - 08:03 PM I didn't get anything but that awful intro! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bobert Date: 23 Aug 04 - 09:12 PM Okay, Bill 'er Rita, I know I keep askin' but is it too late to get accomodations. If so, what's close and are other folks staying there so maybe some designation drunk/designated driver stuff can be arranged? Plus, do you need anyone to do a blues workshop fir kids 'er folks that ain't learnt the basics... Bobert |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:08 PM well..registration has just begun,Bobert...you can look at the link in Charlie Baum's post above. The camp is way bigger than WE are likely to fill...no problem having a place. As to blues, I dunno...it's on the thread now...maybe some other blues folks like Joel or Max or Roger from Baltimore can tell you what the situation is..I know you'll get a chance to PLAY blues...it always happens.. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Annie Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:14 PM Who's gonna be ready to play a little old time fiddle, banjo, and guitar? Chance and Susette? Annie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Naemanson Date: 23 Aug 04 - 11:32 PM Not this year but I think I can say for sure I will make next year's Getaway. I am including it on my itinerary for my round the world trip. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Dani Date: 24 Aug 04 - 09:49 AM Bobert, how about blues for banjo? Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: SINSULL Date: 24 Aug 04 - 11:07 AM Bobert - Max does a blues workshop and I have heard rumors of a jug band. I am trying to figure out how to get a ten pound jug past airport security. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Midchuck Date: 24 Aug 04 - 11:45 AM I am trying to figure out how to get a ten pound jug past airport security. Why should that be a problem?
